Undefeated SMU @ Moody

BearcatTalk

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Caupain did not score in the second half going 0-5.

This team does not have a closer like a SK or Logan who can take the ball and get fouled. These games have been there for the taking and nobody wants to step up and make it happen.

Pretty disappointing that a veteran UC team lost to Larry Brown with 6 players when UC got 18 more shots than SMU.

You could fill volumes with what I don't know about basketball. What I DO know:

-3 games with a lead in the final 2 minutes. 3 losses. Common denominator in all three was lack of defensive rebounding, poorly run offense, missed shots. Lot of that falls on Caupain and Ellis. Either get the job done or find someone who will.
-37 minutes at the point is too many for Troy. Barring some kind of disciplinary thing, not playing Jenifer at all is an absolute joke. I'm sure Mick has some sort of reasoning for this (didn't want to play him against a high caliber player like Nic Moore, etc) but that's just garbage. Another opportunity wasted to get JJ much needed experience and prepared for the late stages of the season.
-I don't want to live in a world where Shaq Thomas takes as many shots in 17 minutes as Jacob Evans does in 29. 6 shots in 29 minutes for Jacob. Unreal. The guys that can create and score have to be given the opportunity to do so and if they are being given that chance, they need to sack up and start being aggressive. Never seen a more passive team in my life.
-I'm essentially done with Shaq. To see a senior who can barely dribble and can't finish from 5 feet in is a disgrace. Probably the biggest disappointment I've seen in my 27 years of bleeding Black and Red.
-24 minutes out of Ellis and DeBerry. They took 5 shots. FIVE. 6 points, 5 rebounds combined. Thanks for caring, fellas.
-Torn on the subject of officiating. I find it hard to believe that an entire team could play 40 minutes of physical basketball and commit 9 total fouls (and one was on the offsetting techs!). What I find equally hard to believe is that a team facing a 6 or 7 man rotation could be so passive on the interior (see the aforementioned note on DeBerry/Ellis). Absolutely baffling.

We want to ascribe blame for what can only be described as a tremendously disappointing season to this point. Caupain, Ellis, Shaq, Mick. I say there's plenty of blame to go around. They've ALL failed. Still time but the clock is ticking down fast. As fans, we can only sit around and piss/moan about what we're seeing. We're helpless. The guys wearing the uniform and the men coaching them hold all the power. The only thing I can take away from them is my passion for the program, the money I spend on it and the time I spend watching and caring. The consensus on this board is that this particular team is dangerously close to losing our support. I love this program, I'm a UC grad and I will support them through good times and bad but man...these are trying times based on what I'm seeing.

Defensively, no. Offensively? They scored, what, 13 points in the last 12 minutes of the game? Execrable.

They were completely locking up SMU. If UC scores on even 1 or 2 of those trips then SMU is fouling and UC gets to 62-64 points. In a game 59 possessions, that is respectable for a road game against a top 15 team. Especially considering how well they were playing on defense.

Doogle, I always look forward to your comments. You're one of the best on here. I've been a season ticket holder for an incredibly long time. I'm dying a slow death right now. My dad got us our season tickets when I was 8 and it's been an obsession for me ever since. But, this coach is draining me. I really hate the thought of giving these seats up, but I'm as close as I've ever been. The cost is just so high when compared to the amount of enjoyment I'm getting these days. This season started so promising. I was sure that we were taking that next step. Little did I know the step was going to be down. Very disappointing!

Mick loves his veterans to a fault. Remember how he said Jenifer was like Downey? How does someone like that get 0 minutes? Especially when the coach says he's coming off of his best game.

I actually somewhat agree with you. We can be a solid to very good program, and arguably could be 13-3 or 14-2 this season and ranked in the top 15. If we ever want to be a national title contender, we need to actually land MULTIPLE top 50 recruits. We are currently getting 1 every other year. Simply not good enough. Mick seems to accept that fact, and doesn't even spend much time recruiting top players. Maybe it's the best strategy for our staff, but watching schools with a lesser pedigree piling them up is frustrating.

How many top 100 recruits are on the team now? Shaq, Evans, Clark was but barely. Seems like X has at least 5. Bottom line is the guys have flaws or else they would not be coming to UC.

Agreed. When Mick first got here he was in on a lot of top recruits but always came up a bit short. I could understand it at that time since we were really down as a program. Now it seems he doesn't even care to go after highly rated guys anymore. Gary Clark, Jacob Evans and Troy Caupain would be excellent pick ups if they are your 2nd or 3rd best recruits in a class...not your headliners.

Yeah, this has been 10 years of recruiting very mediocre players. They're here 4, or in some cases, 5 years. They improve maybe slightly and then they're gone, and a new batch of mediocre skilled players start the process all over again. The wierd thing is this batch of players seemed to break the mold. They teased us with what appeared to be a little more talent and skills, yet here we sit looking eerily similar to our past Cronin teams, if not worse. It's not going to end. 10 years is a good experiment. It is what it is.

Boom! Very true statement.

I've often compared us to Pittsburgh. Mick can get us to a consistent tournament team, but can he ever get us above that? When Mick was flirting with Minnesota and NC State, I always said I don't want him to leave but if he does I wouldn't be crushed like I was when Huggins left. It's not worth the risk to get rid of him and he isn't leaving any time soon voluntarily. He has to do something to improve the recruiting.

I'm not sure I understand this philosophy. We have lost to 3 top 15 teams by 2 pts. There are SO SO So So So many things that could have won us all of those games.

Could we use a closer? Yes. Could we have won those games if we had one of another 10-15 things happen? Yes

I can name 15 if you want

Sure. I am talking long term and not necessarily about tonight's game or the performance this season.

One less turnover
One more steal
One more block
How about having a starting center for 30 minutes
One more shot made
One more defensive stop
One better substitution
One better out of bounds play

I can literally go on forever...

WH, we also lost to a .500 team on our home floor, who then got beat by 27 to an average team in their next game. 3 home losses. You can't just tell half the story.
