I was thinking today if sk put up his numbers and had his dominance in this years college hoops would he be the clear favorite for wooden player of the year? I think so this year IMO is between dukes oakafor and wisconsins kiminsky's but I believe sk was far more dominant. How that jersey isn't retired pisses me off. I would love to bring him back for a game and honor him at halftime

SK was great and had a great career but honestly I don't think his jersey should be retired. There are guys that were better players and had better years so you open up a can of worms if you lower the parameters of what you use to retire a jersey. And I don't mean that statement in anyway to diminsh Kilpatrick or his career here. If you retire Kilpatrick's jersey I think Logan and Fortson have to be retired too and probably a few others from before my time. Once you have 8 to 10 jerseys retired you lose the specialness of the accomplishment.

He is the programs second leading scorer... one of only two players in UC history to get to 2,000 points... who was the first? Everyone knows, Oscar Robertson, one of the best basketball players to ever play... he helped UC win MANY games... was an All-American... He was one of the biggest contributions to getting the program completely turned around... and I don't think it's a coincident we went the the tournament all 4 years he played here. I'm sorry, but I don't see how you could sit there and say he doesn't deserve to have his jersey retired. He will always be one of the best Bearcats of all time.

His career was great. I just think there are a handful of guys that could make a similar argument to him and going forward after him. I think being player of the year is a good way to limit the list.

I agree David. If Logan's # isn't retired, then SK's can't be.

This is North Carolina's guidelines for retiring a number:

Retired numbers[edit]

To have his number retired, a player must win one of the following six widely recognized player of the year awards:[50]
Associated Press Player of the Year
Oscar Robertson Trophy, formerly known as the United States Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year
National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year
Sporting News Player of the Year
John R. Wooden Award
Naismith College Player of the Year

Eight players (including Jack Cobb, whose jersey did not have a number) have had their numbers retired. Tyler Hansbrough's number 50 is the eighth to be retired, after he won all six major player of the year awards during the 2007–08 season.[51]

I don't think it should be retired personally. I appreciate SK and he is one of my all time fav Bearcats but he was a volume shooter. Yes he could get hot and carry you and we miss that this season but I would take Steve Logan personally over him. He may be the number 2 scorer of all time in UC history but he isn't the 2nd best player by any means.

This is not to take away from Sean at all. Classy young man who I hope has all the success in the world. I just don't think his number should be retired.

Another point, look at a guy like Fortson. His numbers were great for three years and he was twice an all American I believe. Had he stayed his senior year his scoring total would be way over 2000. It's easy to say well he left early that's on him but you open up a can of worms in my opinion by saying that. If a player is good enough to leave early then he clearly is a better player than someone who wasn't good enough to leave early. There is a banner honoring SK hanging in the Shoe opposite the retired numbers. I think that is a fitting tribute and one many before him never got.

Never understood why UC can't come up with something just a step below retiring a number. Why not have something similar to a ring of fame where jerseys and their names are honored. Give them credit but don't retire the number unless they are player of the year.

Like a banner?

When is the last time you were at 5/3?

Totally agree here David. I love the banner and how it honors Mick and SK, but I do not believe his number should be retired. He is the true definition of a Bearcat and all future kids coming into this program need to know his story. 3 star player, hardly recruited that came in and was redshirted his first year. Busted his a** and became an All-American. For this he will always be one of my favorites.
