Saw an article about this yesterday. The basketball schools now have a majority over the current football schools in the Big East and have until July to vote to dissolve the league (that's when new members join). You have to think that our TV contract is now worth next to nothing compared to what a Conference USA/Mountain West mash-up conference could earn. Does it make more financial sense for the basketball only schools to form their own conference for basketball and sign their own TV contract?

I would imagine the money that a basketball only conference could make if they added a few other schools like VCU, Butler, XU and Dayton would be comparable to what they make now as members of the Big East.

Let's say this does happen after the basketball season ends in April or May and our football moves into whatever the hell they are calling the new hybrid conference. What happens to our BBall at that point?

Something to think about as this ever changing season of insanity continues to play out.

The money a basketball only conference would make would be one tenth of what Marquette, DePaul, etc. will make in the Big East. They also get to collect their share of about $65 million in exit fees that the Big East will get.

These schools have to have a 2/3rd majority to dissolve the league. They don't have that if Temple counts as a full voting member. This is where the argument comes in and that is why they believe they have until July to make this decision.

Temple is not a full voting member. You can't blame them for leaving. If UC and UConn leave, they are in a pretty poor league. Who wants to travel to Tulane or Houston. The risk is not worth the reward in rpi terms. With regards to money, the NCAA unit payments will be much better when not diluted by teams that do not make or advance in the tournament. TV money amounts to less than NCAA money, so even if the contract is less, the NCAA money can make up for that.

Barring absorption by a league, this simply is not going to end well for UC. I am amazed the BEast has fallen so far so fast and has never formulated a plan to stay viable. This is the worst example of leadership I've ever seen. From their school selections all the way around.

Where do you honestly think uc will be in a month if the big east dissolves?

Um....Where are we going to play football next year?

MWC is allegedly targeting Houston, SMU and other Big East schools

Brace yourself, Big East. RT @StefanieLoh: MWC Commish Thompson: "If we get to 12 we will have to debate a championship game or not."

Jeremy Fowler ‏@JFowlerCBS
With crippled Big East, maybe MWC will think big and go after Cincinnati. Not sure if that even works logistically, just throwing it out

I'd be stunned if that happened, unless we had an easy out.

Lets assume SDSU follows boise out...That leaves us with the following teams:

USF
Louisville
UConn
Cincy
Houston
SMU
UCF
Memphis
Temple

I assume Louisville may still try to get out for next year...That would leave 8. If Houston and SMU are picked up by the MWC, its 6. Needless to say, Aresco has a tall task on his hand to keep the schools currently in the big east IN the big east. On top of that the BBall schools are meeting friday to get out of the league for next year and want to keep the Big East name. Would not want to be Aresco right now

I forgot Rutgers is in the league until 2014.

@dennisdoddcbs UH's statement re Boise defection here, same as SDSU in its omission of reference to the BE: http://bit.ly/TD4BEQ

This is not good.

Santa Ono tweet:

@PrezOno: Happy New Year #BearcatNation. Looking forward to a BIG 2013! #justsaying

He did have a meeting with Gordon Gee last week, maybe something is up.

Great point by Tom Luicci of Newark Star-Ledger: If SDSU goes back to MWC, six Big East schools would have to replace TWO games for '13.

As there will be 10 schools without Boise and SDSU they go to no divisions and play 8 conference games, each school misses playing one school. Replacing is not a problem.

Wrong again. User is actually right for the first time ever. Houston and smu are talking to the mwc for an invite. There will be 8 teams

I agree with Ralph, there is would be no other option than for the remaining members to try and forge a new league and hopefully minus the new additions with the exception of Temple. It's the best of the worst case scenarios barring absorption by the ACC imo.
