What I see on him is he is inconsistent. Not highly rated but a sleeper. I'll get more info on him and we'll start a tab to follow him as things go forward.

My bad for making a new thread about this topic. Although I do think we shoudl give the new guy his own thread and not Teagues ha

Let's hope Chad's right!

I know the all too often heard "whispers" were out on this kid a while back and about this happening... frankly, I think it's a brilliant move by Cronin... and the kid himself, Smith, seems to be taking it all in stride because it sounds like he realizes he doesn't quite have a Big East ready game at this point and needs the extra year... lets all continue to hope and pray Marquis becomes a 'Cat!!!

Do you mind providing a link to this? Thanks.

I don't think this was done to get Teague. It may help but this type a thing could have happened plenty of times in the past with other elite recruits. A coach wouldn't be to wise to let a kid commit who he didn't think was good enough just to get another recruit. In this case, if Teague went elsewhere Mick could be stuck with him or look really bad in recruiting circles if he didn't honor the commitment. My belief is Cronin really thinks this Smith guy can contribute and being friends with Teague is just an added benefit.

Probably right. Teague is a program changing recruit and for someone like this, I would do everything within the rules to land him. Wasn't the previous basketball coach at Pike H.S. hired by Pitino? I think all these coaches realize what Teague could do for their program, but its time for us long suffering UC fans to catch a break. Hope the basketball Gods see it that way too!:D

I understand your point but 1 and dones are not program changers. They may be season changers but not program changers.

I disagree. They definitely can be program changers in several different ways. You can have a better season because of them resulting in immediate recruiting success. They can have NBA success (get drafted high, win rookie of the year, etc) leading to improved recruiting down the road a couple years. Some of these recruits can also help recruit to your school before they even get there which can lead to a domino effect. Finally, many of these kids are high profile and therefore can get you additional games on National TV which can also help with recruiting, etc.

Not all 1 and dones are program changers but some definitely can be. I think Teague can be one of those.

they can be a program energizer and bring street cred with high school kids to a program that has struggled to be relevant in a long time now. a potential early commit (as in this case), is a lot different than a summer commit (lance), because of the attention it gets from other unsigned players.

The question is does it measure up to Pitino's hiring of his HS coach. (I believe that's the story anyway)

It depends on the relationship, if he is in fact his best friend, as some have claimed, imo it's a closer relationship than the coach...

Totally disagree. Teague said he was going to announce Thursday. Why would Mick wait until now to get this guy? Plus, 2011 is going to be a critical year in recruiting and he isn't going to lose out on a big time recruit (Williams, Davis, Sampson, Behanan, etc) by wasting on a scholarship on someone. Mick is also smart enough to know that package deals rarely work. Can someone name me the last package deal that happened, anywhere? The last one I can remember was with the two Ohio boys that committed to OU. One ended up transferring to XU. I know it looks fishy but it just wouldn't make sense for Mick to go after this guy to get Teague. My guess is it doesn't work anyway.

Whether or not you believe it all played out to lure Teague here in a package deal or not, there is no way possible you can deny it helps UC in their recruitment of Marquis... they've played together for years and are very close friends. Is it a dangerous and somewhat foolish tactic if Teague goes elsewhere and Smith doesn't develop?... probably, but that's a risk I'd certainly be willing to take if it meant bringing in arguably the top player in the 2011 class... no offense to Davis, Sampson, Behanan, Williams and the rest, but none of them are Marquis at this point... none of them are one and done, like him...

this has been in the works for a little while now, it didn't just happen the other day- it became public the other day.

Also, Lavender transferred to XU after Brandon Foust and OU parted ways 5 games into the season.
