He had two surgeries to repair his ACL causing him to miss his junior and senior year. Then when he finally rehabbed enough to come back he was really out of shape. Still showed skill but nothing that would catch the eye of any high major coach. Then he went prep where he finally got back into basketball shape. Started dominating at Queen City Prep and UC was the first high major to take notice early on in his season. Jamaree took a visit and committed. Nothing was missed by other coaches. He is just one of those kids whose circumstances kept him out of the limelight. UC was lucky enough to find him early and get him to commit before the other big boys got involved.

I'll take your word for it I guess. Still baffles me especially in Carolina where basketball is highly popular. Makes me think he doesn't have game but I'll wait to see before I judge.

Had a game earlier this year where he put up 41 pts and 23 boards. No idea what kind of player he is gonna be at UC but as a big man you dont just luck into those kind of numbers. I guarantee Kelvin never put up those kind of numbers. Dude has high major skills.

I agree about UC being lucky. It takes a lot heart to come back from the injuries that he's had. A big man with skill and desire sounds pretty good to me!

Gaines, while rated higher, averaged 10 ppg in HS. Those numbers Strickland put up, if I remember correctly, were against the 3rd best prep team in the nation who had 3 guys 6'10 or taller. Those numbers against that type of competiton, he definitely has skill. He now just needs to remain healthy....

If jamarees coach is comparing him to zach randolph, than thats a big compliment and skill set

Yup, as always, gotta wait and see him on play live, especially with the lack of highlights, but I like what I've heard and his pre-injury history, along with his current stats. Looks to be very promising.......

I think you may be reading too deeply into the question. Nobody is saying he is or isn't worthy, what they're saying is they don't know. Up until we offered, I'd never really heard of him either. That said, he looks pretty coordinated, has good footwork and a nice touch. He's also got some pretty decent size to him.
People just want to know who he is and what to expect, no need to get defensive about it...

I'm not reading too deeply into anything. Gotcha23 questions anything and everything relating to Cronin's recruiting ability. He's questioning whether or not this kid is good enough to have been offered a scholarship because no other major schools offered him. He was more highly touted when younger and then got injured. Teams rightfully backed off as he didn't play for two years. Cronin saw something in him to take a chance. Since being offered he was offered a exclusive spot to play on a national team. So yeah, someone else saw talent in this kid other than Cronin. And yeah, Gotcha 23 is saying he isn't worthy. He has dismissed every recruit Cronin has brought in thus far and now is trying to undermine recruits that haven't even played. I want the biggest name players as much as anyone. That is not reality. We can't tout the same resume and offer the same as the few elite programs out there. That's reality. Cronin has to reach for talent. Does it work all the time? No. Is it frustrating. Yes. I'm happy with the results so far. This year's class looks more promising than any of the past's. That comes with continual success. I might wonder why people who think not only is he not a good recruiter but he is not a good coach and can't bring guys up (Gotcha23 fits this bill if you read the majority of his posts on here) how he has managed to win in the toughest basketball league the past three years? He is taking a chance on Strickland. The kid was under the radar, Cronin bagged him early. He has since said he wished he had waited because other schools had shown interest. And getting invited to play on a national team is a big deal. They aren't letting scrubs play for this team. That was my point. His original question is who else offered, I answered with an elite national team offered. What am I reading too much into?

He's not from North Carolina, he prepped there this year, he signed here before that season even began. He last played two years ago in California at the time of his signing.

I think you are on record now as saying you think he doesn't have game.

WTF are you talking about? HA I think Mick is a really good coach. I don't think he is a great recruiter but I think we're lucky to have him. I will never accept "Cronin has to reach for talent", that is COMPLETE BS. Teams like Memphis, Xavier and UC(8 years ago) can bring in top talent no matter the conference! Strickland might have game, I'm just baffled by the lack of offers. Glad you feel sweet calling me out.

Mick just has to recruit a little more on potential than the elite programs - the "one & done" types go elsewhere for the most part - the art of recruiting is getting those players who will stay 4 years, develop into big-time players in junior & senior years (see Kenyon Martin). The Strickland kid might not pan out...then again, by the time he's a senior, he may be an NBA first rounder - time will tell - Some injuries can be overcome...some destroy careers.

Xavier reaches all the time. They reach on character risks and got burnt the last couple years as a result.

Memphis went to a title game and it was vacated due to recruiting violations. They had coach Cal, I wouldn't try to position myself in a recruiting argument with Calipari as your saviour. They still recruit well, but they are a proven winner and recruit local. Xavier gets guys that can't go elsewhere, no one is choosing X over Duke or Kentucky and UC under Huggins took their share of chances on guys to get talent here and enjoyed a final four and two elite eights in a five year span to recruit on. I've said it plenty of times before, once (or if) Mick reaches a final four he will be able to recruit with the Duke's and Kansas' of the world. Not until and definitely not without having been to the tourney at all (which the classes we just graduated and won with came in under) You and others seem to think Cronin can wave a magic wand and overcome the dynamics that is big-time recruiting. Cronin has an eye for talent. He doesn't get his first choices. He has to look beyond the top five names at a position to build a team.

And as far as calling you out, you have beaten a dead horse with your opinion on the matter. You instigate arguments everytime recruiting is brought up. You like the attention so congrats. I get no joy in it. I hate that since the season has ended the only conversation on these threads is what talent this team doesn't have. The past three years this team has won at a high level. They've done so with less talent. It has resulted in better recruiting classes. Mick landed a top 20 recruit this year that wasn't local. That is what we want. That shows Mick's recruiting ability. Instead we argue about why he gave a scholly to a guy that didn't have to choose us over an elite team. I for one am happy Mick filled four roster spots during the early signing period and then still landed a top 20 recruit in the late signing period.

Attention is not what I crave. Getting UC back to a powerhouse IS. When I see teams in lower conferences or with zero history pulling top 100 kids on a consistent basis that bothers me. Where are the explosive players, where are the tough players, where are the intimidating players?? I 100% agree that I'm beating a dead horse with these comments but I don't think that makes me any less right :cool:GREAT TALENT..GREAT POTENTIAL..GREAT SEASONS(with an average or above coach)

I can take my comments to another board if that's what the people here wish

What a lovely block of text... I'm sorry, but just because an international team offers you in the off season, doesn't mean anything. If it did, I would expect Gaines to be good based on his having gone over seas either last year or the year before(I really don't remember). He was highly sought after when he was younger? Based on what?
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, I'm just not going to arbitrarily declare someone the shit because we offered. That's just dumb.

As for Gotcha maybe he does have an agenda, I'm just saying, I don't get how you can cry foul on someone questioning who Strickland is and what level he's capable of playing at. I hope for the best but it's not wrong to question it.
