Wow that was kind of deep with the whole losing his best friend and being the guy to introduce him to the guy convicted of killing him. Poor kid.

I'm really rooting for him and from what I can tell his travel coach is pretty cool.

Loved this:

Strickland’s game is not a polished diamond. Davis said while in France, one of the first things he noticed about his center was that he shot layups like he was 5’10″. “Cincinnati is not looking for a guy below the rim,” the head coach said. “They’re looking for a guy who can play above the rim. [I told him] I needed to see every layup above the rim and I needed to see dunks. Only that.”

And dunks it was. Davis was so impressed with Strickland’s development during the international tour that he started the “seven footer” in the championship game against Russia. Strickland responded with one dunk and eight points against the Russians.

Thanks for posting that article. So sad that this kind of story has become all to common amongst our youth in this country. While I'm extremely happy that kids like Jamaree have the opportunity to get a college eduacation and escape the trappings of their youth I can't help but feel sad for all the ones who don't.

very true Waite...wonder if that played any into his decision to go to school halfway across the country...regardless, a lot of respect for Jamaree...

I'd say leaving bad memories and finding new beginnnings probably helped lead him to UC.

I don't claim to be the greatest Father in the world but one thing I tried to pass on to my 4 kids to help them was a simple math principle called order of operations.

1. get a education

2. decide how you want to apply that education to create financial independence

3. find your lifes partner or not

4. Save some money and buy a home

5. save some more money and start a family if your desire.

If you keep things this simple and apply yourself to staying in that order life becomes a lot easier. If you stray form that order you have created roadblocks that at times can become very difficult to overcome and lead to many heartbreaking events. Heck, it seems nowdays even if you follow those rules you may have issues. Seems for our kids life becomes tougher everyday.

It would be nice if he could put in quality minutes right away. I'm glad to hear from a source unrelated to Cincinnati, that he has potential.
He seemed like a relatively unknown commodity.

it would be huge if he can contribute immediately.

The unknown is what bothers me. Have we had any "unknown" kids turn into monsters?
