Yeah Virginia and Wisconsin have never got a top 100 recruit in their history. We better hurry up and get that tempo up so all the recruits will run here cause that's totally the reason they don't!!!!!

Decker was all state wasn't he?

It's possible that a slower tempo might limit the overall pool of recruits that might be interested in the program. Is it the only factor? No, but it might be a factor.

Mick wouldn't offer the top 100 scholarships if he didn't want them. I don't think it's unreasonable to discuss/debate why we don't land more of them.

There is absolutely no doubt there are recruits of all rankings that will not go to a slow tempo school. That does not mean all good players won't do it. That is silly.

but you didn't say our PPG. you said our pace. those things aren't the same thing.

They go hand in hand. Unless you shoot 20 3s per game with a team where every player shoots them. If we had that, I wouldn't mind our pace at all. Wisconsin was #1 in the country in offensive efficiency. We weren't Top 100.

I'm with the "picking up the pace a little would be nice, but we need to be more efficient with our possessions, rather than worrying about how many shots to put up" people, if such a group exists.

I agree with you. I'm saying it could limit the pool of interested recruits not slash it to zero.

Well if it doesn't, it should. A faster tempo isn't going to hide the fact that the offense hasn't been very good. If we played a faster game, then the points scored per game to "guarantee" a victory would just rise. Getting to 70 or w/e it was wouldn't work anymore.

The offense needs to be better. Yes it needs to score more points. Everybody agrees it needs to score more points. But they can do that staying at 60 possessions per game if Mick chooses to still play that slow.

Virginia was 24th in efficiency and they shot less 3's than we did. But they didn't turn the ball over and neither did Wisconsin.

I'm not sure what everyone expects out of fan site like this, but the last couple pages on this thread have been been really good discussion. The difference of opinions are evident but it's been respectful. Plus, part of the fun is the debate.

We don't have the talent to play at a faster pace. Mick wants to increase the tempo but hasn't started to recruit better players. Maybe Evans and Jenifer will change that but I wouldn't count on it.

Jenifer is real deal will most definitely push pace. Scott probably out best passer in frontcourt. Don't know too much on Evans.

Mick has recruited plenty of talented players. He has missed on most and landed some.

Mick is great at playing to his players strengths and knows their weaknesses. As much as people may want to win with all 5 star recruits, winning with 3 and 4 star recruits is the same thing. We have made 5 straight tourneys so don't deny he can win.

That being said, can recruiting improve? Absolutely. Should we focus more on shooters and fundamentals over athleticism? I think so. Is Mick's recruiting results show a trend in that direction? I think so. Do we need better results in the tourney? Yes. Do I think Mick and our staff can do all of these things? Absolutely.

There are a lot of factors that contribute to recruiting woes or success....to try and blame one thing or person is futile.

Our best chance of winning is to muck the game up and make it a grind it out possession by possession game...the only way that style wins in the tournament is if you also have really talented players that make individual offensive plays. Arizona plays that style but has elite recruits, so does Louisville and Virginia (to a lesser extent). Teams with similar talent as us like Pittsburgh and Villanova flame out. When you play with that small of a margin for error, you will not have tournament success.

I guess I'm confused. All I've been reading is we can't land talented players and have a roster full of "mediocre" players, but now Jenifer is the real deal and Scott is our best frontcourt passer? Considering the passing ability of Gary and Octavius, I'd say that's pretty impressive.

I'm not trying to start anything - like others have said, I just think people are forgetting that these 3 newcomers are extremely talented simply because we missed on Izundu and Rowsey.

One key trait that all the newcomers have is their ability to pass. Jenifer can make any pass on the floor. Justin Young (Georgia recruiting analyst) called Scott the best passer in the state. Evans played PG up until junior year when he hit 6"6'.

We all saw how many times Gary made smart cross-court passes before the defense could react that led to open shots. When you get 3-4 kids like that on the floor at the same time, we will be tough to guard - no matter how many "stars" our guys have.

Yes I agree. What is your solution? Not trying to infuriate you...just curious.

At the end of the day all I want is for UC to win, make the tourney, and have a reasonable chance to advance. I really don't care what the name is on the back of the jersey. I am a life long fan and the name on the front is all that matters.

Their ability to advance in a given year is debatable and somewhat unpredictable, given the nature of the tournament. I really don't care if we score 50 or 100 a game. Either way, one side of the ball will look like crap.
