2018 General Recruiting

There are definitely more than 25 coaches out there better than Mick. Either Jon is family to Mick or one of his friends. The guy seems to think Mick can do no wrong.

I've heard there is 25 better. Yet no lists. And again I've not said he can do no wrong, not once. I don't need a mick hater on my back though

Not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere but Cremo dropped his top 5. We are not included.

Disappointing. Hoping Cronin has someone he can pull out at this point that can add a scoring punch. Opportunity exists for a 2nd/3rd leading scorer.

They will be getting some recruits. Tyler Harris is sick. He's what I wish Jennifer was. He's like the short dude for Miami FL.

It's amazing what new energy can do for recruiting. Our stale program and coaching staff can't drum up much interest. It sucks to see. We get a 2 seed, have back to back 30 win seasons, and are opening the new arena everyone swore for years would help...and here we are hoping to god we can snag a juco away from USF.

Amen to "stale program and coaching staff" !

Has there ever been an effort to bring in someone from overseas? Other universities do it--guys like Mo Wagner at Michigan.

I agree. It's a shame.

I still think Fredericks would be a good get though, but I know what you're say.

Maybe if we were going after two 4 star recruits between 80 - 100 range I wouldn't be so sold on Fredericks.

Yeah I can see Fredericks helping us. In a rotation player kind of way.

I really try not to get so wrapped up in the amount of stars guys are rated. Hard not to at least look at it though. Especially when our competition for under the radar guys is Buffalo, USF, Florida Gulf Coast and UAB type schools. I'd at least be more encouraged if other top schools agreed that these guys were under the radar. Doesn't seem to be the case though. And if it were, we probably couldn't compete for those recruits anyway. We are in a really weird place. Bc I have no doubt that this staff is doing their best. I just don't believe it is UC's best. And at some point we gotta stop making so many excuses for our recruiting and realize that there are things (other than just conference) stopping these players from being interested. I can guess on what it is...but it's on Cronin to know for sure.

I know in the past Cronin has said that recruiting takes care of itself. He also acknowledged that a tournament run would help recruiting...but then 2 sentences later said it didn't matter to him. Could be part of the issue right there.

The international thing is interesting. It'd be cool to get someone with Canadian AAU connections. Either that, a former NBA player, or an offensive guru.

I find it a tad alarming that our top assistant generates no interest from other schools, and seems to have no ambitions to ever move beyond where he is now. Everyone in our program should be motivated to move onto the next thing (except Cronin). The players should have goals to get on the floor, to be productive, and to eventually try to play pro ball. Our assistant coaches should be starving to get out of here so they can start their own head coaching careers. I think Savino is...but he's blocked from getting experience as the Associate Head Coach. And there is no sign of any movement there. I think it's unfair tbh. I understand I'll probably get destroyed for this take. But I'd like to move on. We should want our brand to spread. Cronin should want a coaching tree. I think pulling a Calipari and moving Davis along would benefit us in the long run. This staff has taken us as far as they can. And they have done a great job overall. Our recruiting has become kind of a joke though. With the success we have had recently, I don't understand why we are getting worse players than a couple years ago.

I'm sure we'll keep things the EXACT same though forever and continue to create more elephants in the room that we flat refuse to even acknowledge.

The excuses are running out for impact recruiting. The goal post will just get moved back to conference affiliation issues I'm sure. I thought the new arena would give us a small bump but not seeing it yet. We still have the charter jet excuse but I would file this in the same category of new arena.

The impact recruits are fading fast...we could be back to diamonds in the rough again. Cronin does a decent job of finding program guys but they aren't really moving the needle as much as we need. I don't really consider guys like Evans, Cumberland, Broome, and Clark as diamonds in the rough type of players.

I will say I think LoJo will be an impact guy before he gets out...I like him a lot! Williams too. I hope Diarra will but not counting on it. Maybe the work ethic of Nsosome pays off if he can work on his offense. I am unsure of guys like Brooks, Scott, Moore, Jenifer, Hardinett, etc. They can help...but can they move the needle? We need guys who can move the needle.

I agree something needs to change. And you can only do what you have control over.

The facilities issue should be dead.
Perhaps the plane usage issue remains?

But the conference is what it is, Cronin can't do anything about that

Cronin had control over NCAA tournament success and has failed in that regard.

Cronin has control over his staff...and while they do seem to be very good...something is missing and Cronin needs to create a spark. So it would make sense to look at the assistants and see where we can improve. Because - unless the conference changes soon, this is the hand we are dealt. And we will get the same results without a change in the coaching ranks...wherever that comes from. Is their risk? Hell yeah, but it's the only way to change the reward. And currently our reward is tremendous defense, but offensively challenged basketball that make the tournament and then loses the first weekend.

To me, this whole conference excuse is getting ridicules. We have a solid conference now that Memphis and UCONN are going to be back.

I'm high on Logan Johnson too. But the Broome handling scares the shit out of me. It basically doesn't matter who you are or what your tools are. Cronin tends to force his PGs into a very particular box. So if Johnson spends his whole career walking the ball up the floor, looking over his shoulder, and getting reamed out all game every game, I won't be surprised.

Something Gary Clark said as a joke kind of sums things up for how I wish Cronin would change. Clark said sometimes when he makes a mistake he has to ignore Cronin bc he's going nuts. It's a distraction for our players. Not all of them are as experienced as Clark and know to just ignore the screaming lunatic on the sideline. But wtf? Why do our players have to deal with that? In practice, I get it. Go nuts. Scream your f*cking head off. But during games...stfu. No player wants to deal with that bullsh*t during a game. If a guy isn't doing what you want, then you haven't coached him well enough. And you need to teach them in a more constructive way on the sideline Again, in practice...have at it. Scream, yell, cuss, make your point. Just not during the games.

The "offensive revolution" that occurred when we brought in Caupain, Clark, Washington, Evans, Cumberland, and Broome is almost over. I'd bet that Cumberland will go play pro after this year. Even if he doesn't get drafted. It'd be a shame to watch all those guys come and go with no postseason success. Especially bc Williams to this point looks like he won't carry the torch. At least not soon. And the concerns I have about Logan Johnson are mentioned above. And if we have a down year, does anyone see reason to believe we'll bring in a big difference maker in the 2019 class? I guess it could happen but I'm not holding my breath.

I tend to agree but when you see the top 100 players almost exclusively going to Power 5 + Big east Schools...it seems it has an impact currently. Not that it is an excuse, but it is a hurdle.
