Bryson Spell is official

He's gonna take over Mason's role as a zone buster.

Any insight on this kid? I know he is a stretch 4 who can shoot and seems more athletic than Rap. Other than that I don't know anything about him other than we were pretty much the highest school who wanted him and 247 hasn't graded him yet.

He's known to have an incredible worth ethic. That's pretty much all that's known.

After what we just had, give me the gym rats. This seems like a guy that can thrive with a coach like brannen.

Agreed... And at 6'9 that's intriguing...

I think it's what Brannen prefers at the 4. For as athletic and good Tari was, I think Tari is more of a 5 for brannen. I think Bryson fits the system better at 4 than Tari did. Drew McDonald was a stretch 4 that killed it for Brannen (although clearly a much different body type).

(and no im not comparing Bryson to Tari. im talking about the skillset desired to play the 4.)

By the looks of his tape this kid could become a really nice player for us. He won't be playing inside. He is a shooter. He can also handle the ball. Not very quick but can create a bit off the dribble also. I don't see much rebounding in him but who knows down the road. As with anything I will be interested in seeing if he can defend at this level. I've not seen a UC recruit like him. The closest I can think of is Dermarr Johnson. Not saying he is as skilled. Just saying that he reminds me of Dermarr.

Gives me a very Dirk Nowitzki feel.... obviously not as good but the way he plays

If you listen to his 22 minute interview that is out there, he describers exactly the things he knows he has to work on, and says he has been working on them. Increasing his physicality and being able to defend multiple positions. He said he's more of a wing player, but he understands to do that he must be able to defend in the paint.

It's nice hearing a young guy talk about his weaknesses and acknowledging he has a lot of work to do and he's willing to do it.

All the transfers aside. I think Brannen can fit under recruited/ranked guys into his system and have them excel. I think we need to work harder on the strength training but he can put these guys into position to succeed. Looking at guys like Mason and Davenport. These were not high ranking guys but they can work in the right system. What we do know from the Rap experiment is we can't have two slow footed guys out there at the same time so we still need to get that mobile 5 (or two).

Spell seems more athletic than Rap or Vogt but definitely not a Tari or Clark. He seems to have some decent blocking ability so he can probably help a little on guards that get through the front line.

I'm very happy with this one. Not over the moon but definitely content with it

Definately can see a little Armein and Dirk. He looks to be a better shooter than Armein already. Gonna be interesting with this kid. He handles the ball well enough to even see him playing the 3.

I have nothing against this kid and will root like hell for him since he’s now a Bearcat. It’s just depressing that they are going to be in the same boat next season. 500 record and another missed tourney.

I legitimately think Ryan Welage is a great comparison.

Welage is 6’10
Elite shooter who knows how get off quick shots
More a wing than a big
Not strong
Not athletic
Not a good defender
Not a good rebounder

Welage had a top 50 offensive rating in Kenpom,

If used correctly he can absolutely contribute to a winning team. Against athletic teams he will struggle to defend

But you will absolutely need to find ways to hide him on Defense in a lot of match ups

After watching a little more video. He can start the break himself off the rebound. Passing looks pretty good. Range!! Decent step back and turn around J. Quick trigger. Good hands.

Thinking 6'9" version of Gabe here.
