Bearcats to play 3 forwards?

freshman or senior makes no difference. Lawrence is way better player than Jackson.Experience matters very little when your talking about the difference in talent between these two players. To put it bluntly JJ isn't nearly the player Jermaine is. If they were of equal ability I could understand your point but they are not.JJ's experience vs Lawrence talent is no contest. Having experience is good having talent is better. Lawrence next to Born ready my be the best recruit Mick has ever had here.

To Mick, playing defense is better

Which is why I still think Guyn can start at PG, I think he's one of the best defenders on the team, just needs to control his fouling. Caupain will probably need some time to adjust

Guyn is a very good defender and a capable shooter from what I have seen. I need to see better decision making and some ability to get to the rim to be convinced he is a starting point guard though.

This team is going to get crushed on the low post if DNY can't provide valuable minutes. Rubles is a good low block defender but he isn't big enough to guard a true center. JJ is just weak and a bad low post defender. It will work against the cupcakes but not against good teams.

you can disagree all you want but Mick will start the best 5 players. Jackson is not among the best 5 on the team.

Mick will start the 5 players who are doing the things he is asking them to do. Having talent will not get anyone a starting spot. To start the season...the people who understand the system best will be on the floor as starters and the freshmen will get put in as they get a handle on it. If they are quick learners they may earn starting positions earlier than later but Mick will use the veterans as starters to motivate the younger players IMO.

To start the season...

Guyn
SK
Thomas
Rubles
JJ

I would guess 2 of those will change by the end of the season if not 3.

Enjoyed reading all the comments and opinions. Still convinced Mick will use OCC schedule to gain D-1 Minutes for Lawrence and Troy C with SK,Thomas and Rubles also starting. I understand the value Mick puts on Defense. I also understand talent only takes you so far but this class may be the first Mick has had that is talented enough to play immediately. The returning lettermen are role players who will give us a edge and a burst of energy when on the floor. JJ for instance fills that role perfectly. He fouls way to much to be a starter and his offense and decision making are very suspect. What he does is ignite the team with a block, dunk or board and can be effective when not asked to do to much. Guyn is the same type player. Short stincts in right situations he can be effective. The wild card is Davis. haven't seen nearly enough to have a good feel for what he brings. Narsuk gives us 5 more fouls in the middle and if he is stronger he could certainly help .He'll also need to improve his conditioning. The vets will provide hopefuly the same type of minutes that Davis,Bishop,Biggie and others did when they were Jrs and seniors. The guys brought in this year are by far the most talent Mick has had since he has been here.

That would be a sufficient lineup to start the season. I think as the season goes on though I want to see JJ and Lawrence together. JJ just needs someone to pair up with, he can assist down low as long as he doesn't have to put up the shot, i.e. him and yancy. Honestly i don't understand how cronin hasn't shown a video of Birdman to him and basically said do everything you see here. He does not have the offensive foot work but he can out jump anyone and put back any shot that goes up. And I think Morman has the ability to outshine even anyone of our guards. Yes even killa.

The staff finally learned that Justin Jackson's best position on the floor is the undersized 5, something I've thought since his sophomore year (and was very evidently last year). I see a split at the 5 spot averaging out like this:

Jackson 18-20 minutes
Nyarsuk 10-12 minutes
Strickland 5-7 minutes
Rubles/Lawrence 3-5 minutes

Hopefully Jackson will learn to stay out of foul trouble and Nyarsuk can be affective. The more minutes scooped up from the Strickland + Rubles/Lawrence pool, the better.

Im intrigued by this season a lot. On paper we don't look great, but further examination seems to show a lot of depth and guys who can at least contribute a little. Those guys coupled with the Scoring of Sk and Shaq, the contributions of Lawrence and Rubles on the Wings, and the development of JJ and Dave can make for a pretty good basketball team.

I think this team is going to be better than people think. Defense I don't worry about. Mick has proven defensively he can come up with answers. Can we score? That's going to be the question isn't it? I think it will be more balanced than a year ago and while not an offensive jaggernaut, I say they will score.

I agree, the defense will be there. I just hope this season doesn't become the Sean Kilpatrick show. Guys need to step up and not defer to him.

Agreed, hopefully Shaq is ready to step into a leader role this year.

I think Shaq just needs the confidence and playing time and he will look to score when on the floor. Also think Rubles will be a go-to guy this year. Hopefully he's improved. The big question that we've talked about forever is will a pg step-up? If we can get a guy to distribute the ball to guys in a position to score, we have some playmakers, albeit young ones. If we pass around the perimeter and expect guys to score one-on-one I think this team will struggle.

I expect Thomas and Lawrence to be our 2nd- and 3rd-leading scorers this season. If that happens, I think we will be in good shape.

I think scoring will be something like, SK, Thomas, Rubles, Lawrence, Troy

If Rubles is going to be one of our leading scorers, he had better find a way to score 10-15 ppg without jacking up 3's. I love his versatility... solid defender who can guard almost every position, good ball handler for a guy his size, very good passer, and has the ability to finish around the rim... but I just don't see him being a good jump shooter during his time here.

I believe Titus Rubles will average right around the 10 ppg mark this season. I think he will be a 10 ppg and 8 rpg guy this season.

Jeff I also think he'll provide agood defense as well. Really looking for Rubles to step forward this year. Him Thomas and SK with the newcomers should give our team quite a boost.

I agree that we'l have strong defense. I'm a broken record on this thread by now, but the Cats need to find a way to create more high percentage shots. Turnovers, transition, and defensive mismatches (whoever tries to guard Lawrence), slashing to the rim, and converting Fts hopefully are the answer. The pass around the perimeter and take a lot of 3's approach proved frustrating at times last season.
