Big 12

Why do you say most likely 2018? I have heard several times it would be immediate for 2017

I've also heard UC in 2017 because the AAC exit fees and timing can be reduced similar to what Rutgers did. Although, I've heard the Big 12 will stagger adding schools (something to do with the tv contract only pays in increments of two schools per year), 2 in 2017 and 2 in 2018. UC is in better position with AAC to exit quickly because Santa Ono and Mike Bohn have already laid out the foundation of an exit strategy and secured funds to pay AAC and the entrance fees to the Big 12, making them able to join for the 2017 season.

In an eight team format you don't play everyone in your division at home every year and the other division will be rotational. Don't expect to see UT and OU at Nippert every year or even every other year. Maybe we get in division with one of them (a great measuring stick), but likely only see one or the other at Nippert every third year if not in the same division. Nonetheless...we will have some great teams here and for road trips.

Agreement on Future Members Will Be Tough

In what will be a major surprise to nobody, my source indicated that they are expecting heated debate on each of the perspective new members, with obvious pro/con points for each. In general, my source suggested that while the path to 12 was fairly clear, problems arise when considering options for 13th, 14th, or more members.

Cincinnati, UCONN, and Houston are the leaders in the clubhouse. In fact, my source intimated that Cincinnati was #1 on most lists, but that didn't make it a slam dunk. Who is the 12th? There is a strong push to avoid any more regional abnormalities, i.e. teams that are conference members but are on an island when compared to the rest of the conference's geographic footprint. So, the addition of BYU would have to be accompanied by Colorado State or Boise State, as an example.

The opportunity to add football-only members adds intrigue and complication to the debate as well. The Big 12 could opt to add two members and be a 12-member conference, with one or two football only members in addition. This option, which would likely see Cincinnati and Houston added as the 11th and 12th full-time members, would open a lane for BYU and Boise State to be added for football only. This solves several problems at once. It increases the overall value and size of the conference, adding strong TV inventory across all sports, while adding a few compelling TV match-ups in football as well. Boise State at Texas, OU at BYU, as an example.

But, when it is all said and done, my source believes that simplicity is likely to win out. While some of the bigger solutions may look sexy, the likelihood that eight Big 12 Presidents agree on all the components of a big move is unlikely. As it stands today, Cincinnati is likely the easy 11th member while the debate over the 12th member will center around UCONN and Houston. My source believed, despite reservations, that Houston would win out. Also: "I wouldn't be surprised to see UCONN find a home in a Power 5 conference before the Big 12's process is concluded."

I'm hearing from some pretty good sources, by Monday it will be announced that UC and BYU will be added in 2017 and Memphis and Houston in 2018. Fingers crossed!:)

I've also heard that. I'm crossing everything on me that can be crossed!!

Any more news regarding the GOR? Best case scenario is we get in and the GOR gets extended as a part of appeasing the networks.

Please, please, please!

Thanks for the info L-T. This would be great news for the University and the City.

Now that the AAC media days are over, I would expect some info to start leaking and progressing soon.

I think you are probably right. Here are some possible scenarios (it sounds like there would be several) for Bowlsby to put up for a vote (I hope)

A. UC, BYU (2017)...Houston, Memphis (2018)

B. UC, BYU (2017)...Houston, UConn (2018)

C. UC, BYU (2017)

I really want UCONN to join with us. I honestly love watching UC-UCONN now a days. They are probably my second, least favorite team that we play. I'll miss not playing them.

Wouldn't surprise me to see them continue to play each other regardless. Ollie and Mick are good friends supposedly. Although it could just be another Louisville situation as well.

I think Houston will satisfy Texas but I wouldn't mind seeing Memphis-Uconn for basketball reasons

Me too. Nothing like drinking at bars full of pissy uconn fans following a home loss to UC.
