Big 12

I am biased too but, Houston as a strong candidate is completely bullshit. Except for one good football season in last year, they bring zero to the table. Academics is shit. The fan base in that city is terrible and almost non existent for UH. They have zero support for their MLS team as well. While we draw 10k+ consistently for our USL team. Houston only benefits UT and the fact Houston is even being considered pisses me off.

How does Houston benefit UT.. I have heard that a lot and never understood why?

It's all about Texas trying to open a satellite campus in Houston and UH trying to block it.

The thing that Dodd seems to forget or doesn't understand is that the Big 12 could care less what ESPN wants because there is no future with ESPN. Fox, on the other hand, could possibly have a future with the Big 12 beyond the current contract and Fox wants the Big 12 to expand East. Fox has good coverage with the Pac 12 and the current Big 12 schools but is lacking coverage in the East.

This is exactly why we could see expansion by 4 teams including UC/UConn/UCF/UH. This would give the Big 12 a total of 4 EST teams for which they could setup opening games on Saturdays with. Also for basketball, it would allow the conference to adopt a 7pm EST game followed by a 8pm CST game on weeknights. There is a lot of logic in moving east for Fox, and eventually a national streaming provider like Netflix.

This is all assuming BYU can't figure out how to make things right with the LGBT community. If they do, I believe they replace UCF in the 4 team expansion scenario.

The Dynamo draw about 19,000 per game, middle of the pack in MLS. I'd hardly call that "zero support".

UH has had more than a single decent football season - I think they were 11-0 at one point in 2011 or 2012 and thought they might make a BCS game until Southern Miss put them down. They opened their new stadium on campus last year and drew very, very well. They've also made some commitments on the basketball side in terms of facilities and coaching. THAT program has actually had zero support but at one time their pedigree in basketball was just a notch below UCLA's, and in one famous instance, better than the Bruins. They also have a very good baseball program that has good fan support.

That's not to say they're the best candidate. I'm on record saying their candidacy is built on the momentum from their football season last year, which might be what you're trying to say. We also agree their academics are not up to par overall and they offer nothing new to the B12 other than proximity. Their campus is on the wrong side of town, etc. In my view, UC is the best candidate in the field for a variety of reasons, but that's not taking anything away from what UH is trying to do. They might be the #2 candidate depending on what the B12 thinks is important. Who knows.

Ehhhh, relatively. This past season, they were 7-0, #18 in the country, hosting an SEC team (albeit Vanderbilt) and brought in 29,565. Also, just two year ago, they averaged 24,256. I wouldn't say we're crazily better than they are in regards to attendance, but we still averaged 4k more than they did last year, and we went 7-6 with many embarrassing showings...they went 13-1 and finished the year ranked #8. They should've smoked us in attendance.

This is another one of those stories that was born from "sources" and people have now accepted as fact. A quick google search will show you that going back to early 2015 UT had already acquired land and announced plans to build a satellite campus in Houston.

I'm sure helping Houston get into the B12 might alleviate some political pressure for UT surrounding the idea of building their campus but the University of Houston has nothing to do with UT building a campus in Houston. If UT wants to do it they're going to do it regardless, and in fact, they already announced plans to do it well before any of the B12/Houston expansion talk started.

It's amazing how stories like this get completely fabricated/exaggerated and everyone just starts accepting them as fact. Just like the ESPN/FOX trying to block the Big 12 expansion story. Have either of those two spoken up about it or is it just a story that gained legs from assumptions and "sources"?

I'd be willing to bet a lot of the things people think they know will actually have little to no impact on the final decision and how it's made.

Don't know where you guys are getting your numbers. UC attendance was 37K and Houstons was 34K last year . These 2 schools were numbers 4 and 6 respectfully in the nation in year over year attendance increase (Temple and Memphis were 1/2 with both averaging 43K per game). In 2014 we averaged 28.8K and they averaged 28.3K per game. The bump had a lot to do with opening new facilities I'm sure. Our attendance tailed way off as last season progressed.

@ChuckCarltonDMN
So Mitt Romney is lobbying for BYU to get into the Big 12, @kbohls reports. Imagine the impact if things had gone differently 4 years ago.

mormon public figure lobbies for mormon college to get what it desires. very newsworthy. for our sake, let's hope it goes as well as his plan to derail trump.

Mitt lobbying for BYU can also mean that they need the lobbying. I just don't think the Big 12 will touch BYU right now. BYU had pros and cons prior to the LGBT letter about their Honor Code. Yes they are a successful football program, with great education and attendance, a national following, though they add time zones and Sunday play as issues to be resolved. BYU was a clear top 3 choice in a pool where no candidate met all of the criteria. Unless BYU publicly announces their Honor Code changes, they foster an environment where victims could be made out to be the bad guy/gal similar to what you have seen at Baylor.

I hope the Big 12 adds BYU and Cincinnati in either a two team or four team package because they are a great football program, but I think the Baylor scandal will prove to be too fresh a wound unless BYU addresses this single issue.

NEW UC PRESIDENT

Don't know her at all. I hope she is as capable as Santa Ono. Concerns me a little, since the Big 12 Presidents vote. I assume she will be carrying the torch. I have heard Bohn talk. He is very good, but I am sure college presidents want to hear from college presidents and not ADs. Anyone know her?

Its being reported on twitter by Andy Katz that Bob Huggins, when asked who he would take in expansion commented "I wouldn't take any of them. we're fine the way we are". Good to see Bob continuing to help the school. After doing a wonderful imitation of Otis of Mayberry. He continues to aid the program by advocating against expansion. Someone give Otis a beer or a sandwich to stick in his mouth. At the very least he could have said its not my decision. I guess Bob still holds a grudge against the administration for firing him before he had the chance to kill someone.

Is Beverly Davenport the new president or interim? Three of the voting Big 12 presidents are also interim, so I think they will be accepting to her. I do not know her and share in your concerns as Santa Ono excelled at this type of promotion. She is supposed to have all of the pertinent information Santa had, though very few people can have the personality and charisma of Santa.

I'm counting on the fact that Santa opened the door for UC and has already made the initial presentations. The new president will act with a small team for any current/future presentations, including Mike Bohn to represent the University in best possible way short of having Santa there.

no one cares about basketball in an expansion context.

Certainly he has to understand the time, effort and money the University has invested to just be considered. Being his school jumped to the league he also would know why it is necessary or advantageous. Not to mention how much the fans who loved and supported him during his tenure want this to happen. I guess it really doesn't surprise me. His year long battle with the administration over his dismissal certainly didn't help the transition to the big east or the recovery after the battle. Not to mention the negative publicity the school received in the process.
