If Mick Cronin Leaves: Who to Hire?

A clean break from the Huggins / Nancy era might not be a bad thing for this program. Mick is the last piece of that. Not to tout my own post, but I mentioned that in the "Mick a candidate UNLV thread" post 1316 #brilliant. It's sandwiched in-between posts about mick cronin pajamas and huggins sex toys.
nancy and Huggs have been gone for years. A clean break would take a huge effort. The people who support Cronin will vilify his replacement if he doesn't make the tourney a bunch.

Maybe not as a head coach but Van Exel should be considered for an assistant position. I would hope that would be better than the D-League. Unless he has his heart set on solely the NBA.

Was (semi) joking about this with some people last night. Van Exel with a cast of Kenyon Martin, Steve Logan, and James White.

James White made his way in there because he tweeted that he will be the coach of UC one day.

I love James White. I used to have his near free throw line dunk cued up on VHS for whenever UC lost. Always put a smile on my face. Looking back, I think that was Gus Johnson calling it. I just remember "Breaking, taking down the LANE!" as he slammed it.

He had one with Raftery calling for the "Air Control Tower" too haha. I think that one was vs Louisville.

While I'm sure we can land a good coach it is anything but a slam dunk. Between Jucker and Huggins there were 4 coaches that represented 4 tournament appearances in 24 seasons. In the 10 season after Huggins we had 10 years of Mick with 6 tourney appearances. As I said it is a roll of the dice.

It would be awesome if we hired Huggins with Kenyon as an assistant and offered Mick the video replay guy position.

Little known fact, but Mick is actually in talks with Woodward about becoming their JV coach. He is reportedly calling it his "dream job." More details to come.

Why Frank Martin? I view him as an underachieving coach. What am I missing?

Frank Martin was excellent KState and in his second year at South Carolina he had them on the verge of the NCAA's. He had a complete rebuild job at USC and has turned things around quickly.

I think Frank is an excellent coach. The problem with him and BP is that they're both on the short list of coaches who currently earn more than Mick. So the Univeristy would really have to pony up to entice either. It's not likely they'd be interested.

Absolutley love van exel, great college player here nba all star he would have immediate repsect in the locker room. He keeps in touch with some of todays guys too I think he tweeted at ellis after the game to keep head up
Here's his resume:
Texas southern (assistant)
Atlanta Hawks (player development)
Milwaukee bucks (asistant)
Texas legends (head coach)
--has a great reputation for developing, would be amazing in recruiting and coaching a more up tempo pace. Him plus kenyon would be a dream, talk about a team with some attitude that our fans would love

I've liked the idea of Van Exel for some time. I might just have to bump him up to my top preference!

Bryce Drew is a candidate for the St. Louis job per Jeff Goodman. If he's considering SLU, he'd take the UC job in a heart beat...IMO.
