Never seen this story before, guess Bill Koch was too lazy to report it. Sad story, I really feel for players who come from rough backgrounds and are really working hard to overcome the odds.

Welcome, just thought it was an interesting small story. Plus, I really like Sanders and I think he has a chance to be a good player for the 'Cats this year.

He reminds me a little of a quiet SK. Big, oversized guard who can score. The biggest mistake Mick made last year was not redshirting him. Hopefully, the game slows down for him this year and he can contribute.

If he were redshirted there's no way he'd be ready to be the sixth man for this team. While he didn't do much last year, he got that adjustment he needed to the college game. I would only redshirt a guy if he's just physically not up to the task or he's burried on the bench behind a couple of veterans. Neither was the case with him plus we were already redshirting Shaq and there was no guarantee after Parker's sophomore season that he would develop into anything last year. I'm happy that he has experience under his belt coming into this year with Dixon gone.

Redshirting didn't seem to hurt SK.

Even if consideration was given early last year to redshirting JS, that would have not been possible after the XU fight. With the suspensions, JS was needed in the rotation and was instrumental in the Olahoma win. He played the last 8 minutes of the game, when UC made an incredible comeback. JJ was in foul trouble and Gaines was not effective. Without JS, they would have lost that game. He was also used at times during the season and in the NCAA tourney. I don't think that MC could have redshirted JS last year even if he had wanted to. JS's experience from last year will be invaluable if he indeed becomes the first palyer off the bench. If UC adds a third guard to next years recruiting class, I could see one of them being redshirted.

Who is to say he wouldn't have had a better year if he had the experience? Who is to say the team wouldn't have been better overall had SK been playing that year? Every situation is different but there seems to be a fascination with redshirting players on this board. If JS would have redshirted he would be coming in this year with no playing experience. I'm guessing his experience, albeit not too much, was very valuable. Especially in the NCAA tournament. You'll see a difference when you watch Sanders vs. Thomas. I'm willing to be Thomas won't be as ready as Sanders.

Two totally different cases- Thomas is just undersized, Sanders couldn't keep up with the pace of the game. I guess I can see the argument for not redshirting Sanders, but I think that either JD3 or Sanders should've been redshirted. We needed Guyn because he is our backup pg, but I think that we still had an abundance of guards last year and could've afforded to redshirt one of the two. I guess you never know when it would be nice to have extra players (see brawl, UC-XU). Since we sometimes struggled shooting the 3 ball, JD3 is nice to have, leaving Sanders as the player to redshirt. While I know nothing compares to actually playing in a game, you can still gain a lot by practicing with the team, learn the offense/defense, lose some weight (in his case) in the weight room. SK said that it helped him out tremendously and Mick acknowledged that not redshirting Sanders was one of his worst decisions last year.

That Oklahoma part is way off
UC-Oklahoma December 29, 2011
Jermaine Sanders- 19 min., 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 0-5 from the field, 0-2 free throws, 0-4 from 3, 1 turnover.
That is far from instrumental.

Love that video,

lot of respect for saunders and he seemed to have a great off season, extremely excited to see what this kid does this year at UC, he will probably be a starter next year and a star next year.

Did you actually watch the game? He played the last 8 minutes when UC overcame an 11 point deficit. Does your boxscore tell you that? He guarded the Oklahoma bigs, and no one else was available to do that. Maybe you think that Gaines would have secured the win for the Cats. Probably another mistake by MC, just like not red shirting Sanders.

When did Mick say that not red shirting Sanders was one of his worst decisions last year? Do you have a link for this quote? Anyone else hear Mick say this? Just asking, as I may have missed it.

I don't remember it either. I do remember when he said that about Parker in his sophomore year.

I'm not saying Mick is a bad coach, he is one of the best in the country. He is a way better coach than me or anyone else on this forum. I think that this was one thing he should've done. Yes, I did watch that game and he was okay defensively, but I think they still would've won without him. Who cares now anyways, the past is the past and we have an awesome team this year either way. Sanders will be a good player, and IMO, he will be better than Guyn and Davis. You guys are right, I did mix up Parker and Sanders, but I watched and did a little research on the Oklahoma game. Cashmere Wright won that game for us by going into "beast" mode. The box score is a pretty good indicator of how Sanders played that night. Pretty much all of Mick's players play good d, so that night we needed someone to score and Sanders couldn't do it. You can make a very good case on redshirting or not redshirting, I think. Sanders will be a solid player this year and that is most important.
