March Madness

first of all, he had 37 against the U. 2nd of all, Jackson isn't 100 percent either. we would lose to duke by 20+ pts. they are the best team in the country. haven't lost when they are at full strength plus they play better defense than iu.

Just saying duke plays in the ACC and to say that the ACC had a down year is an understatement, duke has lost to virginia, nc state, and maryland, I think we could beat all of those teams, Kelly opens up the floor for them, but he can just not stay healthy, if curry has a good game, then we don't have a chance. But if they are one dimensional which they can be when their guards arn't shooting, then they are beatable. I didn't say we would win 10 times out of 10. I'm just saying I think we could win maybe 3 times out of 10 and in the NCAA tourney anything can happen.

Anything could happen, that's why they call it March Madness. Could UC pull off a run and upset a 1 or 2 seed in their 2nd game? Of course they COULD.

I guess the real question is based on the way this team has played the last 2 months what leads us to believe this team is capable of making a run? What have you seen from this team that gives you a good feeling heading into the tourney??

Personally I'd be surprised if we win our first game in the tourney. I do think it's possible though seeing as how we were the 8th ranked team in the country at one point. I also agree that nobody wants to see a team like UC in the tourney. Our defense is very good and if we happen to have a hot shooting night we're capable of pulling off an upset.

a little perspective from Lances blog:

Email of the day
The Bob Huggins UC teams went to exactly one sweet 16 in his last NINE YEARS. And that was with a win over a 10 seed Kent State who pulled an upset in game one.
Consider the following:
1. Last year Mick Cronin went to the Sweet Sixteen after his sixth seed Bearcats defeated third seed Florida State. Coach Huggins never defeated a higher seed.
2. Mick started with absolutely nothing. He had to build a roster from scratch, and he started in the Big East, not CUSA. Cashmere Wright was part of his first real recruiting class and has not graduated yet.
3. Mick had nothing to do with the firing of Bob Huggins. Coach Huggins fired himself.
4. Our APR is stronger than ever before, we don't have to worry about how many guys will be arrested in the off-season. And we have another top 25 recruiting class lined up.
5. Attendance began to decline in the final three years of the Coach Huggins era, as fans got fed up with the types of people he brought in. **
Mick has us winning again and he cleaned up the mess he inherited. The man deserves a 10 year extension.
Joe Barker, UC 78

**I looked up the attendance that Joe pointed out. Attendance declined 1,501 per game from 12,805 in 2004, to 11,304 in 2005, Huggins' final season. Attendance dropped an average of nearly 2,000 per game over the final five season with Huggins:
2000: 13,176
2001: 12,906
2002: 12,508
2003: 12,182
2004: 12,805
2005: 11,304

Just an honest question...why wouldn't being in the Big East make it easier to rebuild? Playing time to offer in the best basketball league...never understood that part of the argument.

As for attendance comparing to the #1 team with Kenyon Martin sellout season is a pretty high standard.

Anyone know what the attendance numbers are for the last 3 years?

Yes, to a certain level. Then you have to try and break into that next tier against HOF coaches with NBA bound players that have been consistently winning for decades. I'm guessing Josh Pastner would not be 102-33 if he started in the BE.

Cincy it isn't that we didn't have a lot to offer in the way of PT but it takes awhile to build those relationships. There was virtually a two year gap in recruiting. also it helps to have a coach with a rep. Mick is trying to earn his now.

Attendence was declining until this year i believe. Don't have the figures.

Yep I get that. But being in the Big east helps recruiting. You might got knocked around a bit in year 1/2 (and we did) but it should allow a quicker build than being in the C-USA or MAC for example.

i didn't post this to compare Bob to Mick. Frankly both coaches have resurrected the program. Both inherited a mess.Just found it interesting that the success for the program is not that far off from where it once was.Regardless how this season turns out we are still headed in right direction.

this is how I see the scenario's for our seeding after the big east tourney for us

10 seed: we lose to providence
8/9 seed: we beat providence and lose to Georgetown
7 seed: we beat georgetown and lose in the semi's
6 seed: we make it to the finals
5 seed: we win the Big East Championship

Those are my thoughts exactly. I'd go maybe one step further and say a #9 seed for the "lose to Gtown" line.

If we beat providence, we beat Georgetown , then Pitt, the Marquette .... Sounds good to me, the providence game is the only one that scares me

We do this I think we move up to a 4 seed

I'm sorry but why does beating Providence mean we will win the Big East Tournament? I get the notion of momentum, but I don't see Providence as the big hurdle except that it is our next game.

Beat Providence, maybe win a tourney game, and Im satisfied. If that's a "down year," you know you are doing fine. Lets be real-this team is not nearly as good as last years team, but we still can do okay.

They are all Winnable games (good match ups) that's all I'm saying providence scares me, get past them I think we can make a run.
