Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

They can restrict him all they want but it's a really bad look for a program if they restrict him too much should it come to that. And SK seemed to reach his full potential so not sure why Cumberland would be different. Can't point out guys who didn't work out in Micks system and then don't mention those who did

Buffalo tried to restrict Shannon Evans from following Hurley to ASU and they took a ton of heat. I agree it can be a very bad look.

I'm in the boat that this is a leverage move. I've always believed Cronin was sincere when he said he wanted to stay in Cincinnati. But what do I know. If he leaves that would be nuts. I doubt we could get Archie I would go for an assistant at a high profile program.

I think it depends on how the Univeristy wants to handle finding Mick's replacement. The university has shown in the past they aren't afraid to spend money on a coaching hire. If they choose to save money on this hire or spend big that will determine what we wind up with. We haven't seen Mike Bohn in action yet in a situation like this so I will admit I have some concern in his ability to make a splash hire.

At the end of the day though money speaks. If the university wants to offer similar to what Mick is making now I think we'll have a lot more options than many of you think.

You could be right but I also think there will be a perception that, if the hometown guy who went to 6 straight NCAA Tourneys essentially got run out of town, why would I want to go there. I don't think UC lands their top tier of coaching options if Mick leaves. I don't think it is the slam dunk no brainer that many here think it will be.

I'll never understand this outlook. On one hand you're satisfied with what Mick has done with our program but on the other hand you don't think our program could lure a decent coach. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

I seriously doubt a HC would even consider Mick Cronin before taking a job like this. These guys all have huge egos and most have never seen a challenge they don't feel confident they can overcome.

We have a realistic shot at a Power 5 invite, a new arena in the next 2 years, a beautiful urban campus in a major city and a historic basketball brand. Sure we have some challenges to overcome but that's what the money makes up for.

You think this is Cronin being run out of town?

No. I think it would be Cronin feeling under appreciated from the Athletic Department and the fan base. If he leaves, and I still think this is a big if, it will say more about the unlikelihood the arena is actually going to get renovated and the lack of funds the university is willing to put into the program. I would feel much better about hiring a top notch coach if it was guaranteed we were moving to the Big 12. In the American, you could be looking at coaches wanting to use UC as a stepping stone. Look at the football program. Dantonio, BK, Butch. So now we have Tuberville. I'm thinking anyone would take any of the other three (maybe not Butch) over tubs. But they were up and coming coaches and weren't looking to stick around. What makes you think basketball would be any different?

That's an excellent question. Hopefully the pay + an easier path to the postseason in basketball than football. But I understand the concern, assuming the Big 12 thing falls through.

Please, name one coach who has used uc basketball as a stepping stone? Uc is, has been, always will be a basketball school. You don't use a school like uc as a stepping stone.

In order for a coach to "step-up" he has to succeed. So again, if we hire a coach and he leaves after 3 or 4 seasons it means we had a pretty strong run during that time. I'll take the run UC had under the list of men you mentioned above over 8 more years of Mick-ball.

By the way, if Mick goes to UNLV he's not stepping up, he's stepping down.

If it's someone with zero prior ties to the program, I'm not sure you can assume that across the board.

I hope your right but i actually think you're delusional. I also find it ironic that recruiting is something that has been held against Cronin by many people on here, yet they are also afraid that those same products of "bad recruiting" would bail. I'm sorry but you can't have it both ways. If they're so good that you fear them leaving, then i'd chalk that up to recruiting, and landing good players.

I'm not saying Mick is stepping up if he takes UNLV. What I'm saying is that making the tourney 3 or 4 years in a row would be deemed successful and allow a coach to step up if they wanted.

@GoodmanESPN
Mick Cronin doesn’t need to go see UNLV in order to take the job. He recruits there every summer, has played in multiple tourneys there.

Go back and read my posts. I haven't once mentioned fear of losing our players. Don't put words in my mouth.

My issue with recruiting has been with the program depth. We never use our scholarships and rarely get production outside of the top 3-4 players on the team.
