Mick says UC should be ranked higher

Cronin is wrong imo... Look we have played NO ONE, and we have played at home a ton. I'm perfectly fine being a 24 and 25.

Keep winning and it will work itself out.

I like the typical coach speak of: "I don't care where we're ranked now, I care where we're ranked at the end of the season." or the simple "We'll just have to work harder and make more believers out of people."

I don't have a huge problem but this does come across as whiney. If Mick wants to use that angle with his kids, make sense, but why not keep it in house?

Sorry, I've never been a fan of diminishing other programs ("the teams ahead of us with 3 losses" or the shot on the A10 a few years ago) I just don't think there's anything to gain from it. If you're, I don't know, Bruce Weber, Tubby Smith, or even Pitino, you might have that comment relayed to you, basically Mick saying his team is better. Maybe not a issue at all, but why risk it?

Plus, it is kind of a shot on both the AP and/coaches that comprise the voters. Do you think you get any extra favors questioning them? I mean it can't help, right.

Whatever. No biggie, I just wish he would have a given a real simple "who cares, doesn't matter right now" type of answer.

I have no problem with him knocking every single voter in the coaches poll... as little respect as UC's gotten in the AP poll it's been even worse in the coaches. This team will back up their talk with their play on the court Thursday night. I think they've got a point to prove to the nation.

Huggins used this tact for 16 years. What's more he is right. UC isn't getting respect from the talking heads. Do you think if Syracuse had the same record and schedule they wouldn't have been ranked weeks ago? The players have bought in and that's what a coaches job is. I say mission accomplished.

While I agree with Mick I don't think he said this by accident. He wants the players to be hungry. For awhile the battle cry was we weren't ranked, now it is we aren't getting enough respect. This is more tactical than anything.

I never argued whether he's right or wrong about ranking. (although I think he may be) I just don't think you say anything, other than in house, or unless it's blatant disrespect.

Let's be honest here, how much do we really believe we're legitimately getting snubbed? Does anybody think we should be top 15? If not, we're at 24th, why make waves over maybe 4 spots or so?

To each their own, but it just sounds like whining to me, especially after finally breaking into the poll. It would be different if it were the end of Feb and we're campaigning for a seed. (That's when I remember Huggs mouthing off here and there, and didn't necessarily love that either.)

What's wrong with saying "We're happy to be ranked, but we still have a lot of work to do" or something? And if the situation was reversed (your Syracuse question) I'm not so sure that Boeheim doesn't handle that subject with a little more tact. And, yes, Cuse would be ranked prior you're right. But when you have a HOF coach, have won titles, and good every year you get some benefit of the doubt. It may not be right, but that's how it works.

I could be wrong. Maybe I making much ado about nothing, but it irked me a little. I'll just leave it at that.

I think you use what you have to motivate your team. The team is motivated and feels it has something to prove. I say well done.

I like that he thinks this and uses it as a motivator with the players, but I wouldn't have said it publicly. I think Mick has done a lot better with the PR this year but I think this wasn't one of his better moments.

Not calling you out or anything, this is just a rant at today's media. I just can't stand today's attitude with "oh my god he said what". Honesty is seen as a negative trait now a days by the media. You have to tip-toe around what you actually believe and want to say. Oh, well he didnt say this correctly, or he should have said it this way, blah blah blah. I love coach's that are honest and actually give their opinion not caring about what the media thinks. There is a great example of this right now in the English Premier League, its the Manager for a team called Blackpool. His name is Ian Holloway and boy does he ever just said whatever the Hell he thinks. Its awesome, if you wanna see someone really not give a $hit about the media's opinions and give his honest to goodness feelings read or listen to a few things this guy says. Oh and did anyone see the crap the Harbaugh is taking for basically not talking to Michele Tafoya (?) after last nights Orange bowl. Thats a coach I respect and get behind!

Ultimately I don't care, but I just don't think he should have said it because of the attention it is sure to receive.

So that's how you handle it, tell them they are idiots? That's going to help.

Mick needs to shut up and just stop talking to the media, Bill Koch specifically. He looks like such a whiney guy that it becomes hard to stick up for him....Let your play do the talking like every other successful coach out there.

This is a tactic used by Huggins and many other coaches. I dont give a shit what others think of it. I like it.

Really? I've followed UC since Huggins was the coach, read the articles, listen to his postgames, went to the Montgomery Inn's, and never once heard Huggins complain about where they were ranked and that they should be ranked higher. Maybe I just somehow missed it.

I have an honest question for everyone: Does anybody else get the impression that Koch isn't ever exactly doing Mick any favors? Or that he makes things worse, and that may be intentional?

I know sometimes I read things, and I wonder if perhaps, he poses a friendly question that Mick responds to, and then throws him under the bus by publishing it.

There was a specific article Koch did a few weeks back (Sorry I'm totally drawing a black on what it was exactly. Scheduling, probably) and literally said to myself, "Jesus, Koch really f'd Mick over by running with this." I remember thinking that the stance Koch took was a tad odd for a school's beat writer, and that you wouldn't see that around many other programs.

When i saw the comments today, I did wonder if any number of other reporters would have just run with the kids quotes and left Cronin's out, or just worded it differently rather than a direct quote.

Anybody ever wonder about Koch? Cuz if I were Mick, I get the feeling I'd be telling that guy to watch what he prints. And for those that don't like Mo Egger, you may what to turn your attention to this guy.

I agree completely. It is a great motivational tool but needs to be used in practice and not in the press. He came across as a whiner begging for respect.

Guess it depends on your point of view. I think it's making a mountain out of a molehill.

I believe it was Mike DeCourcy who wrote an article this year about Frank Martin and the comparison to Huggins. The basic premise was that early in the season Martin was complaining about how bad his team is, but in mid February, he will be questioning the media why they are surprised his team is so good.

The basic premise was that Huggins routinely questioned the media's analysis of his team, usually later in the year. I happen to remember the same thing as Mike.
