I don't think he's a great recruiter or great coach. I think he average to slightly above average. I don't mind being patient if I believe I'm waiting for something good.

You can say that most fans think Mick is doing a great job but again I'll disagree. We average what, 7k fans a game? All those fans that used to come and don't anymore aren't supporting this program with their dollars. I have season tix, I sit in sec 122 row 11. I have good seats, I sit next to good people. Some business men, doctors, lawyers, and various alumni. Most are intelligent and rational people who love UC hoops. I can tell you right now that 70-80 percent of the people who sit around me are not on board with Mick. Most all of the UC fans I have exposure to are not on board with Mick and its a large and diverse network. Hell, Oscar Robertson isn't even on board with Mick.

He should be doing more by now, his recruiting, in game coaching, ability to develop and overall results leave a lot to be desired.

The guy obviously can't coach. He's just on the verge of finishing in the top 6 of a great conference with outstanding coaches for the second straight year. He's done it despite having one of the smallest budgets in the league and a fraction of the "fan base" hoping he fails. Not saying you are hoping for failure, but I hear it all the time around town. Frankly I think it's disgusting how some fans treat an alum of the university that actually wanted the job of rebuilding the program when no one else did.

This thread is classic!

Could never have guessed that this topic would have sparked a conversation.

As I have said many times, people involved in college basketball across the country greatly appreciate what Mick has done with limited resources and how he has worked thru the situation he inherited. He has far less respect in his home town than he does nationally.

Disagree Jeff. I think most locally have come to appreciate what Mick has accomplished. Sure there are still a few like UCbearcats who continue to beat the same worn out drum but those like him are definitely a dying breed. Another NCAA bid come March will only enhance the support for Mick locally as well as make the Mick bashers of the world only sound more illogical and bitter than they already do.

Hope ur right.

Yes that Is a fact. Don't know where the MC to Ill. idea got started.

Maybe it got started by the guy who last spring was all over the internet posting Mick had taken the North Carolina State job. He even had Cash Wright believing it. He wound up having to eat a lot of crow on that one, still is.

Mick's conversation with NC State lasted one word, their consulting firm called Mick to ask if he was interested and Mick said "NO".

Any Mick Cronin to anywhere rumors are not to be believed. Mick is a Cincinnati guy much the same as Jim Boeheim is a Syracuse guy. UC is Mick's dream/destination job. It would be easier to get Coach K to leave Duke or Jim Boeheim to leave Syracuse than to get Mick to leave UC.

Lets get one thing straight here and quite frankly this is whats getting old.

The Mick Cronon "bashers" do not hate Mick the man. They (we) disagree with his coaching strategy. They run a 3rd grade offense and rely on hustle and D to win games. What coaching is being done?

There are a few guys who have improved under Mick. Parker, Gates (although very inconsistent), and Killa.

On the other hand, I thought Cash would be a top 5 pg. Vaughn got worse as his career went on. Bishop was the same. LS got worse as the season went on. Thomas brought little for being 6'11.

The budget has nothing to do with the abiltiy to coach. Nothing

For those who say they want Mick to leave ASAP... who would you like to replace him with. PLEASE keep in mind we cant force or kidnap a coach to replace him.

So schools like, St Marys, Butler, George Mason and VCU can find good coaches, but a BE School can't?

Murray State has had 2 good coaches since Mick left

But for the record, I havent said Mick should leave. Its just frustrating watching this brand of bball and inconsistency

Good coaches in a lower conference is all good and fine HOWEVER to be a good coach along side the likes of Huggs, Boeheim, Calhoun, Lavin, Pitino, etc. is a totally different story. PLUS you have to be able to recruit a high caliber type of players and none of those schools have coaches that currently do that.

The only reason this rumor started was because of the Mike Thomas previous connection with Mick. I highly doubt there is mutual interest, if even any interest from either side. Mike Thomas isn't exactly someone the coaches were dying to work for.

There's noway if I'm Mick do I coach at Illinois. It's not THAT great of a job to leave him hometown team that he's worked so hard to get back anywhere close to the level we used to be.

Good coaches have to start somewhere. You find those guys through interviews. To be honest, some of those players at that level have higher bball IQ and make shots consistently

I know in football you usually present philosophys for offense, defense and special teams. I'm curious to know if thats true for bball and what Micks philosophy was for offense.

Butler has a good coach? How is his record this year now that the NBA players are gone? Good players make good coaches, all coaches know the X's and O's, it is the quality of the players that wins and loses games.

It is the same in basketball HOWEVER alot of time offensive sets aren't even run because of the speed of the game and flow. I played in high school and AAU (against mayo and bill walker which was not fun) and you have a certain type of offense you run. We ran a motion type offense (melvin levitt's team) but at times we ran no sets because of game situations, speed/flow of game, or defensive changes. It comes down to execution by the players.

BINGO WAS HIS DAMN NAME-O.

Mick turned Lance Stephenson into a NBA guy in only one year.
