Micks offense

I do often, everyone on this board had the heads up that UC was not interested in joining the Big 12 was the latest. The Ralph is rarely wrong, I get the impression that you are very jealous of that. Wanting Mick fired because he is not Bob Huggins is about all you ever bring to the board TLL. If you do not like my posts you are under no obligation to read them, so do not. There are many who want to read the Ralph's insights which is why in only 3 days time The Ralph has many twitter followers including members of the UC athletic department. UC Marketing, now AD at Towson State, emailed me quite awhile ago that of all the posters on BCN I was the most enjoyable read.

Now you are speaking of yourself in the 3rd person. How many personalities/id's do you have on here Ralph?

As far as what was wrong with the offense in the last game its a multitude of things, but the one thing I saw referenced (a lack of a mid range game) has absolutely nothing to do with it. Jumpshots in the 15-20 ft range are the single worst Eexpected Value shot in basketball. Think about it. What is a good shooting % from 17 feet? A guy who shoots 33% from 3 would have to be shooting 50% from 17 feet to get an equal points EV. A lot of players dont shoot 50% from the ENTIRE FIELD INCLUDING LAYUPS, let alone on 17 foot attempts. The 2 most efficient ways to score in basketball are the following:

1. Transition
2. Free Throw attempts

(nothing mind bending right)

Well guess what happened last game? Neither. UC shot a whopping 10 free throws. Cash, Dion, and Kilpatrick combined for 2 free throw attempts in 109 total minutes. That is absolutely embarrassingly pathetic.

I dont have the transition #s in front of me, but I recall they were outscore in transition at halftime, and prob were for the game as well. There is definitely way too much standing around and ball watching without enough PnRs, hard cuts, and attacking the rim off the bounce. They started their offense too far from the rim on their entry passes to the wings, which meant that it would take more dribbles to get to the rim and by then the D can recover and help. Until they start beginning their offense closer to the 3pt line in a scoring threat position, they are going to struggle, and struggle a lot offensively.

The issue with this team offensively is the inability to get easy buckets. Our guards really struggle to feed the post and when they finally do, Yancy has to come out to 15 feet to catch them. Transition plays a role in this as well. We don't outlet the ball well and we really haven't caused the turnovers leading to easy buckets. I have more of a problem with the execution of the offense than the offense itself.

A little bit better this evening, Dion looked to score at times. SK looked to get to the bucket.

When we rebound we have to outlet faster.

It was good to see Dixon and Killa take it upon themselves to drive to the basket.

Im still concerned with the amount of dribbling out by half court and the lack of effective screens away from the ball. Im not sure I've seen a guy come off a screen and hit a shot or have an open lane to the basket. It seems to be a lot of one on one basketball

My issues for the past several years has been the lack of aggressiveness offensively and the missing of fts. Attack the basket and put pressure on the defense. That will open the outside. A team that is up and down shooting has to be able to convert free opportunities when they are available and force as many of them as possible.

Right.

I don't wanna hear anymore Mick say we are who we are. He is the one recruiting these guys. I'd rather hear him say I am a defensive minded coach. We spend so much time and effort on the defensive end, I don't have an answer for the offense.

Its his 6th year and we are seeing the same type of offense as year 1. These are all his guys now with an equal opportunity to recruit. Stop blaming players

And did you notice, especially in last night's game, the offense started to come around as the game opened up. Early on when it was a slow paced game and UC was resigned to run all their sets, the offense was terrible. As soon as the game opened up a little and they were able to get in the open court and freely use their abilities, the offense got much better.

Good point. From what I saw from Dixon and Killa last night, they are capable of slashing to the basket and creating. With Jackson's hustle and Ellis, why cant this team be more fast paced?

Dont tell me because of Gates. He is one man

I don't think Mick has done a bad job. I don't necessarily think he's done a good job either. Namely, he was known as an excellent recruiter. And outside of Yancy and Lance Stephenson, who both pretty much fell in his lap........I don't ever see him getting his true recruiting targets to come here.

And I do find his brand of basketball boring.

I would enjoy a head coach who understands offense more and who can recruit some pure shooters.

Mick reminds me of Jim Bowden. Bowden always wanted those 5-tool players. Mick always wants those super-athletic guys, many who can't shoot.

I'll take more Kilpatrick's. Not the most athletic, but a pure shooter who also has the smarts to know how to score in a variety of ways. I'd make him the focus of the offense if I were the coach.
