Next year's scholarship situation

Sanders? You mean the only reserve besides Shaq who can score? They can always redshirt there or have a big leave. I like Morman, but I doubt he will qualify, and if he does, I think KJ could go prep, he is another combo guard, we have tons of those. I think something financially has already been worked out so that we can have all of them, and if Morman doesn't qualify, it solves the problem.

Redshirting does not free up a scholarship. You are on the roster and using a scholarship you just are prolonging a year of eligibility. And financially, no one is going to pay their way. No one has 100 grand to burn so another guy can come in a take a scholarship you were offered. And honestly I think the NCAA would look hard at a team that signed too many players then magically convinced someone to pay their own way, especially after that player was offered a scholarship.

I understand that, but redshirting could be an option at a clogged position. I would rather have players with more talent (Sanders) than players at thinner positions with less talent (Gaines). St. John's did a few half scholarships, maybe UC could do something like that? There are multiple ways to still give a scholarship but still keep everyone. Hypothetically, maybe there is one recruit who is really smart and gets a nice academic scholarship (not likely, but hey, never know), half-scholarships, financial aid, etc.

I'm not sure where this "Johnson's family is already paying for an expensive high school so they wouldn't mind paying for college if asked" idea is coming from, but it's strange to the point of ridiculous.

It is not ridiculous. More prolific players have been walk ons including Russ Smith and Andre Drummond, it could happen, slim chance but still could.

Heard from Private source it is big Dave moving on. Two more years of playing the waiting Gaines. Should Morman not make it as well you bring in a shooter. I was hoping former NY guard Isiah Williams preping at one one of Mick's hot spots.Arlington Country day in Fla. Still alot of JUCOs ,releases and transfers out there.

I hope for a solid big man, even though Williams would be nice. Any solid post presence we could add would really go far in helping us improve.....

I heard Dave may be moving on as well.

Why would he move on? He may, who knows, but he was the second person off the bench behind Mbodj at the center position. Now Mbodj is gone and they have no one besides Gaines, who is actually worse than Dave, and an incoming freshman...And if they try to put JJ there they'll likely quickly find out that he can't defend a competent big man.

Just telling you what I heard. That if a move needed to be made that Nyarsuk is the piece to be moved. Whether that's off the roster or another creative way, I don't know. Just sharing chatter, now saying it makes sense or is right.

It doesn't make sense for Dave to move on. He would probably be a starter next year, especially with a full offseason and a lack of options behind him. To me, would make more sense if one of the guards/wings left or didn't qualify. If a big man were to leave, it would make more sense for it to be Gaines since Dave has just one year left but honestly they both need to stay or we'll have Rubles playing a ton of minutes at the 5 (we know Jackson will never stay out of foul trouble).

Nyarsuk was doing fine off the bench. Had a number of really good games in the 1st half of the season. I remember Bobby Knight singing his praises in one big game on TV. Then, the puzzeling stretch in the mid-season where Mick suddenly moved Gaines ahead of him for about 5-6 games and he got very little playing time. After that, he was a completely different player and went downhill fast. That seemed to do a huge number on his head. Prior to that, I thought, with normal development, that we would have a pretty good center next year in Dave. I still hope he comes back. There's enough talent there, and size, to not just cast him away. I'd take him over Gaines any day of the week.

This cuts to a deeper issue with Mick and his inability to develop big men or an inside game. I still have difficulty wrapping my hands around having Biggie McClain (4-Star recruit) for four years and getting zero out of him. Calhoun at UCONN wanted Biggie as well and it would have been interesting to see what would have happened to Biggie if Cahoun had coached him. We also had Yancy (5-Star recruit) for 4 years and he was decent but considering he was here for 4 complete seasons, he achieved far less than what we expected. The assumption coming in was that he was one-and-done. My son worked with his sister for 3 years....talked to her every single day....and right from the start she was saying he was leaving for the NBA after one year. Well, he never made the NBA, which is mind boggeling for the level of skill he had and the obvious size that he posessed.

Whatever is happening in this program with the big guys needs to be looked at closely. Something is seriously not working.

LT, let's keep this about the scholarship situation and for once just leave the Mick bashing/praising out of it. You want to discuss his development of big men, please start a new thread.

Thanks for taking this thread off topic.

I thought this was interesting too. After Nyarsuk played so well in the Pitt game he seemed to be gaining confidence, I believe he even started a few games over Cheikh who looked lost at the time. Then, for whatever reason (I am assuming it was effort related in practice), he couldn't get off the bench and his confidence dwindled to the point where he would drop every pass thrown even remotely in his direction. I still think he is the best option on this roster at the 5 spot, which isn't necessarily a good thing, but still would be interesting if he was asked to move on.

I too believe that Big Dave can still contribute. However, he really needs to hit the gym and become alot more outgoing and agressive. I don't know him, and i may be wrong, but he seems shy and lacking in confidence, especially in the game. The first thing he needs to fix is all the drops, someone needs to follow him around on campus or something and just throw balls at him to catch.

The thread topic had moved to a discussion of David Nyarsuk being moved out and I added my observations on Nyarsuk and why I disagree. The fact that the coach has had problems in this area, and now may be considering cutting the ties on Nyarsuk too quickly, is right on topic. But thanks for your contribution to the thread as well.

You took the topic way off line when you started talking about development of big men. Stay on topic. Period.

The drops were an issue in the 2nd half of the season when he lost confidence. In the 1st half of the season, he was a different player...very sure-handed.

Sorry, disagree. If we're freeing scholarships with big men who aren't developing, it's right on topic.

No he wasn't, that's complete BS. He had good games few and far between. He was terrible in some games both early in the season and late in the season and it had nothing to do with Cronin taking him out and ruining his confidence. Your agenda gets old.
