Sorry, Jason was spot on with his comment. It was common in the 90s. Just off the top of my head, Bobby Brannen and Ryan Fletcher come to mind. Their bodies were not much different than JJ when they got to UC. When they left, they were more like Swarzeneggar. Even Kenyon put on some significant weight and muscle. And that conditioning transformed all their games.

That muscle came over the years. Brannen didn't just put on a ton of weight between his junior and senior years. Those guys were still putting on weight and muscle going into their senior year. JJ isn't even close to that....And Brannen was a man amongst boys in high school. Him, and even Fletcher, were far from being rail thin when they came to UC. Saying their bodies were like JJ's is flat out inaccurate and is a great example of revisionist history.

Dude, you can call it what you want. Jason was correct and I am correct. I haven't hardly missed a single home game in over 50 years. You can try to correct someone who doesn't know better, but don't say I'm flat out inaccurate, because I know what I'm talking about. I was there. I saw it with my own eyes. You're the one that is flat out inaccurate. Fletcher came in buffed up after one off-season...between his freshman and sophomore years. Brannen might have been a man among boys in high school, but that has nothing to do with how he bulked up at UC. The bottom line....Jason's comment about seeing it all the time back then was 100% accurate and you are one of the only ones that would try to argue that point. It was a point talked about over and over both locally and nationally with regards to our program.

Yup. I was in school at UC during those years and it was crazy. They talked about how it was more like a football lifting program.

No doubt. Our program was defined by toughness and muscle. It was a topic of discussion on almost every nationally televised game as they would talk about Curtis Bostic, or Brannen, or Fletcher's bodies. Anyway, this is a stupid argument. The point is, JJ could put on the muscle if he wanted to. He showed zero improvement from last year to this year, so if Mick said he is not a hard worker, then that explains it. I thought he would be a beast this year and I was very disappointed by the way he played this whole season.

We tend to be wowed by his amazing blocks, especially when he is trailing the ball handler. At the end of last season, he had developed some pretty good baseline moves, especially incorporating some good spin moves off the dribble, and I just really expected to see him refine that and be an 8-10 per game scorer this season...and I expected to start seeing a decent mid-range jumper from him. Too bad, because athletically, he's awesome!

I was really high on JJ's potential heading into this season and I was disappointed as well. Usually you see the biggest jump between the second and third year in a program but he was the exception. I really thought he could be an 8 and 8 guy.

ha, you crack me up. Wow, you been to every home game in 50 years, you must be right. I was there too, in fact I knew Brannen. Dude was huge in high school and just continued to get bigger in college. He never put on 20lbs of muscle in one off season. Just didn't happen. UC's strength program was one of the best in the country (I would know, I was part of it), but to say these guys put on 20lbs of muscle in the offseason, and that it happened on all the time, isn't accurate.....You guys go ahead and believe JJ will put on 20lbs of muscle this offseason. I guess we'll see who is right in 6 months.

Another guy to look to for a Jr. to Sr. year bulk/strength development was Keith Gregor. A guy like Bostic was into martial arts and was strong to begin with. I think, I was really young at the time, was that Gregor worked at a gym over the summer and bulked up that way. That was a forerunner to the formal strength program that was introduced to the team.

You crack me up as well. In fact Bobby is good friends with my son, so I might know him a little better than you. He's been in my house a number of times. In fact, I partied with him myself about 4 months ago. Had a long discussion about the good old days and his years in Australia. Thanks for telling me what I don't know. Discussion over!

lol....Mick has already said he doesn't work, so we know he won't put on 20 lbs. The debate is if it is possible, and our past athletes have proven that it is possible. Seeing JJ in six months won't solve that. It will only prove if he is a hard worker or not.

yea, if you say so buddy.

the past athletes haven't proven they put on 20lbs of muscle in one offseason. If you really think that it was proven, find me proof of it. Not BS stories. Past UC players bulked up like crazy, but not 20lbs in one offseason. But go on and argue it, I'm done with it. I don't really care what past players have done, the original argument was could/would JJ do it and there is no way in hell it's happening.

Someone needs to put Muscle on Dave. That boy had some skinny legs! Saw him on campus eating Pizza the other day tho...guess thats a start.

Better yet, since you are by yourself out there on an island as the only one trying to argue this point, why don't you provide the proof that it didn't happen. The rest of us know it happened and don't need to come up with the proof.

Hmmmm...even skinny little Casmere Wright was able to put on 20 pounds of muscle in one offseason....per his coach Mick Cronin. (scroll down to paragraph 10). Imagine that...possible for a small point guard, but not for a 6'8" forward. Wow!

20 lbs of muscle in one offseason does sound crazy, but if a guy like Homer Bailey in a non-contact sport can add 10 lbs of muscle then I guess it's not out of the question.

So no one knows anything about Morman's eligibility rumors then? I've heard that a bunch of times here but never seen a source

Guys in my younger days I was a power lifter for the Air force team. No way Does a guy put on 20 lbs of muscle in a off season. He may gain 20 pounds of weight and add some lean muscle mass but know way is he putting on 20lbs of lean muscle. Isn't possible.

exactly.

Scholarship thread turns into a heated argument about whether a player can put on 20 lbs of muscle in the offseason. Yeah, that's about par for this course.

I'm going with Mick on this one. He said Cash did it. One thing I've learned on these forums is to not doubt Mick. He's pretty much never wrong. ;)
