Next year's scholarship situation

Guyn is definitely going to have to develop body control on defense...i love the pressure and intensity that he brings, but he is, and i hate saying this, too physical...he picks up quick hand fouls consistently...i would agree, that based upon what i have seen thus far in their time at UC, that Guyn is faster than JDIII...in my opinion, when compared to Guyn, what JDIII lacks in speed, he seems to make up in body control...one thing that concerns me about Guyn is his temper...he has had a couple of instances where he has let his temper get the best of him...would i want him to not be aggressive, no, but i dont want to see him struggling with foul trouble all year either...

i definitely had my doubts of Guyn heading into last year and even early on, but down the stretch, he did show progression and growth...with Guyn and JDIII on the team next year, i think the PG situation is in decent shape...i am comfortable/excited heading into next year
Sorry I can't share your enthusiasm. Haven't seen enough from JDII or Guyn to feel comfortable having either lead the team at PG next year. My hope is that we have Caulpin come in and handle the role and by years end be a very good player.

Am I the one that thinks Guyn is a solid player? Sure, he's not going to make really deep 3's like Cash, but I think he can drive to the basket and throw up nice floaters or get fouled, since he's probably the best free throw shooter on the team. Yeah he was a bit out of control on defense but that's fixable. He even improved his shooting towards the end of the season.

I really think Mick continued to play Cash in the hope that he would return to his old form before the injury. I'm excited to see what Guyn can do as starting PG

As for people talking about JDIII being a big contributor next year, he has as much of a chance as the freshmen. That is, none of us really know what his impact will be, we're guessing off of a few minutes of playing time he got his freshman year

All we do is Guyn, I could see GeLawn taking a step forward next year. He has gotten some playing time and he seems physically up to the job of defending. His outside shot is not bad. My concern is his dribble drive penetration and his finsh at the hoop. I think as he gets more experience he'll take better care of the ball. Still hoping one of the new guys is a better option but if he works and improves he could get some run.

Really good point on the free throw %. That is a "key" requirement of a point guard and a huge plus in his favor. My big thing against him is his vision and ability to deliver the ball. He hasn't shown any ability to dish out assists, and I feel he'll be impatient and too eager to launch a 3 or drive it to the basket. JD3 is a little more unknown, but I look at the skills I've seen and I'm more impressed overall than with Guyn as I feel JD3s strengths compliment more of a "team" concept, where Guyn's are more individual. JD3 also looks pretty good from the FT line and his court vision and passing are much better. Both guys should be big pieces in the puzzle. It will depend on which guy upgrades his weak points the most in the offseason.

I will take a Larry Davis type career from Guyn. I think people forget he made at least one three pointer in the last 5 or 6 games. Also, as some have mentioned, is the best FT shooter on the team and hit a few nice floaters in the paint. For Guyn it is about staying out of foul trouble and playing off the ball defense better.

bearcat-NTS, one other area he needs to demonstrate a proficiency in and that is delivering the ball to the low post. Hopefully that is a area he'll need to accomplish. Haven't had that option in quite awhile. Cash never had anyone to throw it to unless you count Yancy. Yancy never seemed comfortable with his back to the hoop on the block.

I like Guyn. My hope is he CAN be the guy at the point because he is the most experienced there and he can make foul shots. Someone said he hit a 3 in the last 5-6 games but he still shot under 29% from there.

I saw GG coming in as a guy that'll get in the lane and use his floater to score. I really think he showed progress at the end of the year doing this and being more aggressive. I don't think he was bad, I don't think he was great in his 10 minutes per game. He reaches too much on defense. But we will need scoring from the point next season. Not Cash scoring, but 7-8 ppg and solid ball play. Can GG do this? I think we'd all be lying if we said he has proven he can. Again, I hope he can.

Jeff, I hope GG is the guy to step up. Like you I have my concerns. I really thought his D would be better. I think his outside shot will improve. His mechanics are good. I want to see the decision making with the ball improve. Being a PG guard you need to make the other players better. Don't know if GG can do that.

Next season will be bittersweet.

We knew what Cashmere Wright, Jaquon Parker, and Mbodj could do.

We're probably stuck with returning starters and first men off the bench, S K, JJ, and Rubles getting most of the minutes.

Question will be:
1. Will they go small down low with JJ at center. Or will Gaines and Nyarsuk get most of the minutes similar to Mobdj? Will Strickland see the court?
2. If Gaines and Nyarsuk play the most minutes at the 5, most likely JJ plays the 4 with maybe Rubles filling in the rest of the time. Or will Lawrence get some time here?
3. S K will be at the 2 most likely.

I mean, we could see a retread lineup of:
PG - ?
SG - Kilpatrick
SF - Rubles
PF - Jackson
C - Gaines/Nyarsuk

How frustrating would that be, barring some drastic improvement from those guys?

There is no way Shaq Thomas isn't starting at the 3 next season.

If JDIII could handle PG, and everyone I list would up their defensive games.........the offensive lineup I'd like to see is the following:

PG JDIII - So. (redshirt)
SG Kilpatrick - Sr.
SF Thomas - So. (redshirt)
PF Lawrence Fr. (more like a second SF)
C Strickland Fr.

This would be my pick also. Hopefully Caupain can translate his very impressive numbers over, in some fashion atleast.

Jackson IMO took 10 steps back this year. If he wasnt in foul trouble, he was missing layups or turning the ball over. And on another board someone said he refuses to use the weight room. Any truth to this? I hope not, why wouldnt a kid want to better himself? He needs to be much stronger.

I dont even know what to expect from rubles next season. Will he turn it around and be the player we all thought he was supposed to be?

I dont see Big Dave or Gaines doing anything again next season so our post game will struggle again.

I think you will see Rubles play a lot more minutes, he will probably be counted on to handle the ball and play some "point forward."

PG: Guyn/JDIII/Caupain/Johnson
SG: Kilpatrick/JDIII/Guyn/Caupain/Johnson/Morman
F: Rubles/Thomas/Lawrence/Kilpatrick/Morman
F: Jackson/Rubles/Lawrence/Thomas
C: Nyarsuk/Strickland/Jackson/Rubles

I think Gaines will move on, from this early depth chart looks like either Johnson or Morman will be redshirted.

i have been very critical of Guyn, but i was glad to see him make progression and develop more last year...i have two concerns with Guyn, and they are 1) control and 2) i still dont think he is a true point guard/floor general type (not saying Cash was either)...Guyn will have to gain more control on offense/defense or he will be in foul trouble early every game...although Guyn got better with Cash out, he still migrates to 3pt line away from ball...he does not command the ball as much as i would like to see...really hoping that his maturity and growth from last year carries over throughout the summer and into next year...hoping he developed/gained more confidence to want to run the offense and control the ball versus waiting for a 3pt attempt...he has shown he has a very nice/natural floater, and his shot looked decent too...hoping he continues to progress, just like every other kid on the team...

Go Bearcats!

Rubles will play a lot of minutes, but i really hope he does not have to handle the ball...his dribbles are no better than SKs...and he cannot dribble left...i want to see him stay down low and bang the boards like he did down the stretch this season...

JD3/Caupain/Guyn-PG Redshirt Johnson, since he is moving from playing mostly SG to PG; JD3 mostly will be a SG, but also play some point
SK/JD3-SG
Shaq/Lawrence/Morman(?????, if he does qualify, he also could be redshirted to help refine his game)-SF
Rubles/Lawrence/JJ-PF
JJ (pressing)-C
Strickland/Dave (if he is still around)/Gaines (if he is still around) (not pressing)-C

Lots of moving parts next year, that's for sure......
