Because they haven't had good bigs. It's not rocket science. The rest is strength. SK finished fine Shaq doesn't. What I'd like to know is why they dont dunk.

I agree about the quality of bigs being an issue. But we have not have one player in the Cronin era who can finish around the rim, from PG to Center. I mean yeah I can agrue strength too bc we have had the size to be able to finish. I see a lot of other programs have similar guys who can finish around the rim. There is a certain technique and positioning that a player can do to be able to finish around the rim or get fouled. Especially being undersized. We have never had a player demonstrate that. Its a bit alarming.

I mean big old Gates couldn't even finish around the rim. I agree about the dunking issue. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Jackson was just starting to learn to finish around the rim this season. If the light bulb had gone on after his freshman year and he hit the weight room then, he would be a late first-round draft pick this year.

I do think DeBerry is the favorite to start at center. Short term I am very excited about him. Long term, I am very excited about Moore. And that's no knock on Strickland... just haven't seen enough of him.

The interesting thing is, most of the guys we have coming in are known for being good finishers around the rim. Strickland has been described as a big body with soft touch around the rim, although he does lack a lot of athleticism. DeBerry sounds like a man child, as I heard at one point that he had a tomahawk dunk on Yancy while he was visitng. His motor will be his big question. Finally, Quadri is known for being able to score inside and out. He does take some plays off and can be lazy. Clark is a high energy player who will make a meaningful impact right away, especially around the rim with how ultra-athletic he is.

Also wanted to add that Mick said DeBerry is planning on coming down this week to work out with the team (he is on spring break at his JUCO).

Told you guys Clark would play some 3 and Moore will play some 4 in certain situations.

Dixon, JW, Bishop, and SK could all finish. Actually KJ is a good finisher and Caupain isn't bad.

Caupain is going through the same thing Cash did as a freshman in that he is getting everything blocked at the rim. He'll settle in and become a good finisher for a guard. BTW here are the FG% at the rim for the team...

Kilpatrick: 86/121 71.1%
Jackson: 121/191 63.5%
Rubles: 58/96 60.4%
Thomas: 43/67 64.2%
Sanders: 19/30 63.3%
Guyn: 19/44 43.2%
Caupain: 31/61 50.8%
Johnson: 18/30 60.0%
Lawrence: 15/26 57.7%

It will be interesting to see how the defense will change with guys like strickland and deberry in the game. I don't think they'll be able to switch everything like rub and jj.

Probably will resemble Louisville this year more when they have a combination of Van Treese, Harrell, or Mathiang on the court

I think Caupain finishes really well at the rim on the fast break and can do it with either hand. I'm also looking forward to Strickland and Deberry being some real forces in the paint this year.

You answered your own question basically. There iq in certain situations was horrible. Especially when driving the lane and kicking out being only 2 feet from the basket.

Shaq Thomas had the second best shooting percentage around the rim on the team. He just needs to continuously attack the basket and stay active on defense. Too many games (including the Harvard game) where he was on the bench in the second half because he kept losing his man on defense.

NTS agree Shaq had defensive issues which kept him on bench. Attacking the basket will improve if he works on his handle and goes strong without trying to avoid contact.Mick himself stated that he has issue with
Shaq ducking and double pumping and not converting or drawing the foul. He has a nice spin move and can make the flashy play but he leaves a lot of points on the floor by not drawing that foul.

I actually thought outside of TC and KJ, Shaq had best handles. It was frustrating watching us a have G that could give Shaq nice outlet pass so he could attack basket on fastbreak.

Mick should've started Lawrence and TC from day 1.

Wow! I'm pretty shocked that JL has that much respect to make this list. But, it's true, we really need him to step up. I know he was injured some, but he really wasn't much different at the end of the season as he was at the start. I don't feel like he was primed to break-out as the season came to an end. I think his potential to rebound the ball is off the charts. I saw some real development there. Offensively though, he didn't seem to make much of a stride. His propensity to get in foul trouble needs to improve before his defense can show real movement. But, I love that he's getting this recognition.

Rothstein loves UC. He is a NYC guy and gives them more pub than all national media members combined.

If you are Cronin and you want to build your program as being defense first, you destroy the culture you spent 7 years building by letting 2 guys who are not good on defense start from day 1, while you bench your best defender in the past 3 years (Rubles) and one of your better ball pressure guys in Guyn.

I'm sure this is based on his high recruiting ranking. His highlight videos make you wonder what the next few years could bring. Looks special but I guess you never know if it will translate to the college level.
