Hahhaha, you can't make a realistic opinion on what he has done so far? Okay...

Not in the terms of 2011 recruiting and not when it comes to basketball where many years you are bringing in only 3 or 4 players. You can look at the players he brought in and decide if you think they are good players (though no one will truly know until they suit up for the Bearcats) but you can't judge an entire recruiting class when it is only 50% complete. To say Mick hasn't done a good job so far is crazy when you have no facts to back it up. What if Mick has landed 3 of his top 10 targets for this year? So what if they aren't 5 star prospects. Taking a snapshot look at recruiting is never accurate and a waste of time. I choose to wait until the class is completed to form my initial opinions on what the 2011 class looks like.

We were always a longshot to land Harkless, so it isn't a big surprise.

It is more important to get Shaq Thomas and/or Jermaine Sanders at the SF position.

I love Sanders as well. He isn't as athletic but is a tremendous scorer. Mick has supposedly told Sanders he is his #1 target. Providence and Keno Davis are on him hard too.

I get that you can't judge a recruiting class till it's done. I agree.

But you can judge current results. Current results are not good enough. That could change with the work Mick and the other coaches are putting in.

This class could still end up a top 15 type class.

No reason to fret just yet ladies and gents.

I agree that on the court results are not good enough. Based on where this program was and the recruits we are still in on, I can't call the recruiting a failure. I just don't think you can judge a basketball recruiting class when only half of it is finalized. Every team needs good role players and maybe the three guys Mick has landed fits that bill. Not great if you don't get any playmakers or impact freshman (and I use that term very loosely). You just don't know what the class is going to look like yet. No one was excited about Sean Kilpatrick when it was announced he was a Bearcat. Now, after hearing how good he was in practice, people can't wait to see him play. Recruiting is always a wait and see proposition.

All you can judge is where they are ranked. You can't judge anything other than that. People don't want to hear it, but after the top 10 or so players it's a crap shoot. There are far too many players to adequately evaluate them. some are missed. Some are seen briefly, and if they have a bad 2-3 days they are dropped or ignored. Ellis was a top 150 recruit in June. He dropped after the July evaluation period because his play in July dropped off. Recruiting is fun to follow and none love it anymore than me. I'm just telling you for a fact that there are good players outside the top 100. It is mostly projection on how some recruitnik thinks these players will fare in college. Sometimes they're right. Sometimes they're not. Sometimes a kid is not ranked and has a big spring and all of a sudden He shoots into the top 100. Sometimes a kid drops after the same evaluation period. Look at Jeremiah Davis. All of a sudden people are saying he can't play and won't project well. That wasn't the case 6 months ago.

Unfortunately you can also judge recruiting by how players a coach has recruited have developed throughout his time at a school and thus far the results have been decidedly mediocre for Mick... who that he has recruited has gotten significantly better in their time at UC? We need to start seeing results pay off on the court from the recruiting end as fans before we can place faith in a coach and his current recruiting efforts... if Coach K. or Jim Boeheim recruits a 3 star or otherwise 'under the radar' recruit, nobody questions them because they have a proven track record of fostering growth and development in their players... Mick hasn't earned that trust yet, though he certainly still can... with players on the current roster, none the less.

I am not too upset about losing Jack and Harkless considering we never had a shot.

Even though most fans know about the main recruits we are after, I am sure Mick has some other players up his sleeve that we are not aware of, such as Ellis. So even if we aren't landing our top targets, I'm sure Mick will have some options later in the signing period (Lance, Parker, etc.)

That is a fair statement and I agree with it, though I also believe the players have a responsibility in this as well. For me, even though I completely support this program, it is time to move to another level or move on. I will support Mick all season, but I expect results or I will again call for change.

I completely agree, Rankings are accurate less than half of the time, but mentally when you score a top 25 talent it is better for the psyche of the team as well as other potential recruits looking at your school. I had no clue that Octavious was even really on our radar so lets hope Cronin has more rabbits to pull. The more i read and Watch about Ellis the more that i think he could very well be a really good get. In order though to compete in the Big East we will need atleast 2 or 3 very good players each year. I think once a highly recruited kid commits to a school and other kids take note the more likely they are to commit also. We need one big name to hop on board because i believe as soon as they do another will not be far behind.

That is my stance right now, as well.

There are a lot of people out there that believe Cincinnati got a steal by getting this commitment. There is some skepticism as well. Most of which is centered around Doc Oc being able to put his past behind him.

Octavious Ellis

Whitehaven High basketball standout Octavious Ellis has given a verbal commitment to attend the University of Cincinnati.

"The best big man in the state in the class of 2011, Octavious Ellis," said William Rhodes, who coaches Ellis on the AAU Memphis Select team.

"He's a legit 6-9; he's grown two inches in each of the last four years. The only negative is his strength -- his weight is about 190 right now, but once he gains about 25 pounds, he'll be unstoppable."

Octavious Ellis

6'9" Power Forward from Memphis Whitehaven High 2011, Octavious Ellis is a stud and everyone is about to find out. With an lethal combination of size and finess, Ellis can dominate many facets of the game. Ellis prides himself on playing with-in his game and focuses on the things that helps his team. Ellis is an amazing shot-blocker with long arms and great timing. Ellis committed to the University of Cinncinatti. Ellis is an honest young man and admitts there are some things he needs to work on to become a complete basketball player and better person. It is the opinion of PM Hoops that this young man will succeed.

There is a good video on tay tay here....kid is a photo copy of Dermarr johnson...

With his ball handling skills will we see him at the 3 just as much as we see him at the 4?

Considering we are adding Maine and Shaq, I doubt it. Of course, Mick could decide to go big and as long as he has good range on his jumper, we might see him there. I fully expect that he will be a 4 though. I don't know that his handle is quite what DJ's was.

I'm just looking at the kid... and if he doesn't put on about 40 lbs, he's going to have difficulty being effective at the 4 in the Big East.

I agree he probably is not going to be a 4 (Darnell wilks) between him and Shaq wow what possible potential. I cant believe really only ms. st and utep were recruiting him. He looks to be a diamond in the rough type player. Imagine having him at the 3, what a size advantage. Im seeing a Armein Kirkland type player coming in. whether he plays the 3 or 4 he has the potential to be a nightmare mismatch. I see his rankings skyrocketing come here soon. good get MICK!!
