Octavious Ellis "He's our wild card. He's 6-9 + just turned 18 last summer. He can shoot, handle, + has tremendous length."

All along I thought he was the guy we were going to redshirt out of this class. Sounds like cronin is very high on him, is it possible this entire class will stay intact? I thought atleast one would be redshirted.... Either way very excited to see this group gel in the upcoming season. Go CATS!

Mentioned earlier that if, and it appears it will, the roster stays intact that I think Ellis will not be redshirted. People forget he was a top 135 player at one time. It's all about consistency of effort and strength for him.

you can't have a 13 man rotation. we saw how playing 11 every game went 2 years ago. even playing 11 leads to disarray. theres a reason the top teams every year have tight rotations with defined roles- if no one knows their roles- no one ever gets settled.

so my question is- if he plays, then who is going to sit?

Didn't say he would play. Said numbers are a good thing if you need them in case of injury. My guess is Gaines, Yancy, Mbodji, and Jackson will eat the minutes.

Which is why I could still see him redshirting barring an injury. If someone gets hurt and you've absolutely got to burn it, than burn it. Wouldn't hurt to split up the class a little
either.

Wouldn't bother me in the least if he redshirted. I'm just saying I don't believe the staff will do it. Especially after Mick's statement.

Let me run this by you...is Mick looking at him as a three?

if he isnt going to play why would they not redshirt him? that makes no sense. leave him sit on the bench and waste a year- especially for a guy who isn't physically ready.

If his handle is as good as everyone is claiming it to be it wouldn't be a stretch to see him play at the three at some point. Would certainly create some match up problems down the road if you had Gaines at Center, JJ at the four and Ellis at the three... tons of size.

Think of the length! Scott physically is very much the same. Guyn on the perimeter as well.

I'm telling you it sounds to me like this is a consideration. He could also be a face up hybrid 4. Glad his academics are alright.

So basically- we don't know what's going to happen right now with the freshmen class... but we do know it's going to be interesting and there are going to be a lot of options and opportunities for playing time this year. Step up and earn your spot!

If Sanders can't get into better shape and play solid defense it's possible he could be redshirted, or am I crazy?

It would be best if one of the freshman is redshirted. I assume that tay tay is the most likely.

who is tay tay? what's up with all the nicknames on this board?

why are people always so interested in redshirting players? maybe it's just a slow period for basketball i guess. this team has no experienced SF's, is thin upfront, and only has one returning PG. hopefully these recruits are good enough to earn playing time. if not, this board has been greatly overestimating the quality of this class.

you cant play 13 guys, or 12 guys, or effectively really play 11 for that matter. if you have guys who arent going to play, and they are freshman- why wouldnt you redshirt them? why waste a year of eligibility if they arent going to contribute? also, 5 is a huge class. you can balance classes out when we only have 2 players guaranteed coming in next year.

Not overestimating anyone. Out of this large class people aren't all going to be able to play. If Mick believes they all can be serous players in the future, than why not redshirt. We all can assume that Wilks could've been more productive given another year, so why not learn from a mistake.

And btw Tay Tay isn't a nickname I gave Ellis, the contacts I have in Memphis said everyone in the area calla him that. I didn't feel like typing out Octavius Ellis. Sorry that you are not "hip"

Just because you don't play that many every game doesn't mean you'll never need those players. It's one thing if we're talking about a really deep team. But every year it seems like the talk always surrounds on who will redshirt on this team. Recruiting has continued to improve and this team is thin in a lot of areas. I would hope these guys are good enough to earn playing time. I understand situations like Gaines where he is a project. But even then a lot of projects still get PT so they can get a feel for what it's like. Most on here were clamoring for Wilks getting a redshirt, as if it was somehow going to magically make him play smarter or shoot better.

I wasn't directing my overstimating comment at you, it was just a general comment. This class is large, but their are a lot of holes. Tell me what position UC is deep at? Maybe SG but then again SK struggled in a lot of areas last year and Dixon isn't a great shooter. No backup PG, etc. I'm hoping these recruits can add valuable minutes.

ps - you could have said Ellis, or Octavious...;)

Just from the look of things it looks as though you're choosing to take a 'glass half empty' approach to this years team... pretty much everyone from fans and coaches to analysts agree this team has an opportunity to be very good...

Is this team going to depend upon it's starting five? Yes. More than they have in a long time. Which in my opinion is a good thing. We've got a clear idea of who the leaders are on this team. Redshirting Gaines will pay off in the end, barring a serious injury. As well- red shirting serves the purpose of balancing classes when needed. I think that could be the case here as well. Just another reason to CONSIDER doing so with one of the freshmen.

The 'Cats are going to be good. Have a beer and be happy. :)

Haha yeah I could have..but my iPhone was being weird and auto correcting everything.

I agree that this team isn't deep at the 3/4/5 position. But if Ellis isn't ready he won't contribute anyways. I really like Ellis's potential so I want him to be redshirted because I think he can be good in the long run. With Gates, Jackson, Gaines and Mooj...they will have enough to kill the 40 minutes.
