Caupain was big time exposed tonight.. He's incapable of defending major college point guards. His lack of quickness affected us in attacking the zone also.

Nonsense. Caupain had the best defensive rating of any guard on the team last year. Second highest steal percentage (behind Jackson). He's quicker than he looks and long. He played bad tonight, and Moody was making some ridiculous shots. It happens.

When Cobb goes out earlier this week and makes a statement that he's used to the rims and goes 1-9 shooting tonight, c'mon man. He's only had one game that he's been productive in so far this year. In my opinion, a Tony Bobbitt in the making.

Where did you play college basketball?

Didn't play college basketball. But I know if your shots are not falling you don't continue to keep shooting the ball. Bearcats need to pass the ball inside more and get Ellis and Clark some looks. Both have been our most consistent players.

Oh ok...

Lol!!!!! Ok, my bad. He's definitely a lock-down defender.

94.2 defensive rating; 3.0% steal%; 12.2% defensive rebounding% as a frosh.

Cash Wright, Mick's best defensive guard, was 101.8, 2.4%, and 8.8%, respectively, as a frosh.

Yes, Troy is a very good, smart defender. Better than Ge and Johnson. Jury's still out on Morman; he is very athletic but fouls a lot.

2 for 19 from three is pretty close to our normal percentage.

Nope.

UC has averaged 33% from downtown this year and made just over 5 threes per game. To put that into perspective, Ole Miss has only shot 26% from 3(!!!) so far this season and shot 50% from 3 tonight.

Moody also scored 26, which is his career high. He made three 3s tonight and so far this season he had only shot 3 for 21.

We lost because a guy went off against us. He has only averaged 10 points this year, and more than doubled his average. Since UC shot so poorly we couldn't keep up.

Also, let's not forget that Ole Miss did beat Creighton who is traditionally a good team (and Creighton has already beat Oklahoma this year - another solid team). It's not like this is a bad loss early on.

Edit: Moody was also making circus shots. I doubt he repeats that performance more than once all year. We got their A game and played our D game in return. We simply didn't shoot well and we had open shots.

At least we didn't pull a Memphis and get outscored 42-15 in the 2nd half. Because at one point, we easily could have. That just shows how much our players respect our coach imo. If Morman can always bring that kind of energy, he could become one of our most important players this year.

Serious question -- what did Kevin Johnson do tonight to warrant leading the team in minutes? Did I miss something? I know he's a solid defender, but I didn't see anything in particular that stood out. I do hope that he gets out of his shooting slump, but jacking up bad shots isn't helping.

I counted on 3 losses in the OOC. Hated seeing it and it exposed things a young team needs to learn but I think this will be good for them. I'm not sure Mick had everyone's attention. I think he'll have it now. 5 assists tells you all you need to know. Too much perimeter passing and dribbling till they had to shoot late in the clock.

On a side note: We were worried about post play when the season started. I'm worried about guard play and have said this all year. No penetration and nobody is stepping up or standing out at the 2 or the 3. 12 points combined from Caupain, Thomas, Sanders, Johnson, and Cobb. Mormon had 11 though he only shot 1-7 from the field and 2 of the 5 assists the team recorded. He at least was attacking and shot 10 ft's, and in my mind has earned some pt. Clark is a pretty good looking freshman 12 points, 12 boards and he and Ellis combined for 8 offensive boards. Quadri Moore 12 minutes 1 rebound won't get it done.

It's probably not as bad as some feel it is, but there are real concerns with the guard play. Caupain starting for the first time. The team trying to fill SK's shoes. Fitting in new pieces on the perimeter and learning a new system. It all matters and the process continues and I believe it'll get better.

Caupain has played ok, not great but ok and solid for the most part. This team is getting no consistent play from the 2-3. If that continues this will be a long season.

Pure and simple... if this team doesn't shoot better from the perimeter we are going to lose a number of games in which we have the more "athletic" team. Teams will just play a zone, pack in it, and dare us to shoot from the outside.

I'm still optimistic that Troy, Farad, and Sanders will find their touch. Hoping it is sooner rather than later.

No doubt about it. UC is pretty easy to defend. AK is no slouch and easily realized the strategy. If you look at UC's numbers it is just down right ugly.

2-19 3pt
10 turnovers
1 steal
0 fast break points
5 assist
7-56 FG

No wonder I saw individuals playing last night and not a team. I said earlier hopefully this is a reality check for these guys.

I am also worried about our lack of steals and lack of creating turnovers. With as many athletic guards we have we should be creating havoc and getting easy fast break points. I haven't seen that once this season.

The biggest issue last night was a lack of attacking the basket until late in the game. Once that happened, we started getting to the foul line. If we had done that all game, it would have been much closer. The way the game is officiated now gives about every advantage to the offensive player (sans the charge call, which there have been too many of if you as me).

The way you beat a zone is from the inside out - attack the gaps, get to the foul line, and knock down open threes when you get them. We did have open 3s but most of it came from perimeter passing.

The other night, Mick didn't play Moorman at all. he indicated on his radio show it was because of the zone. Not sure why he has not been getting more minutes. In my book, the better player gets the minutes. Not sure what the debate is here. All throughout Mick's tenure ( I like Mick), he has had trouble with zones and foul shooting. His teams don't generally do well with either. If I was coaching against Mick, he'd see a good zone ALL DAY LONG !!! Until Mick's team starts solving the zones which means more coaching on zones, we will continue to see it and continue to lose. The 1-3-1 killed us yesterday. 5th graders can solve this, why do our guys look so lost all the time. Also, we spend so much time playing help defense that we can't get to shooters on the perimeter. Need less reliance on the help defense and more on guarding your own player and penetration.

Not sure why we continue trying to figure out our offensive woes, its pretty much the same thing year after year. Pass around the perimeter then shoot when the shot clock runs out.

It was a bad game and the team really looked like it had dead legs. That can happen with 4 games in 6 days.

When the 4 guards go 4-28 there's not a lot you can do.

When Caupain struggles we are going to look bad. Caupain has to adjust to the minutes he's getting. He hasn't played well since he carried us against E Illinois and played 36 minutes.

And when he's not doing well there really is no leadership. He has to play with confidence and aggressiveness because he's the closest thing to a leader we have.

I think this team is made up for playing a match up zone defensively. Just my opinion but Mick Cronin gets above average grades on coaching defense.

Offensively it is the same issues yearly. It seems this staff does not A) recruit well to it B) teach it well C) understand offensive concepts D) all the above. Shooting and agressiveness would cover some of this but UC doesn't recruit shooters and UC doesn't push the ball. You all know I overall like Mick and I like him as our coach because you have to ask "who replaces him?" and Mick wins and runs a clean program. But there at some point has to be someone brought on board who can help in this or a philosophy change has to take place in recruiting and right now Mick Cronin recruits to defense and rebounding.
