I can see him on the floor as a combo guard. Last season point off the bench really hurt this team. Davis could provide a spark. I'd take a Larry Davis contribution.

Everyone keeps acting like Guyn hasn't been getting minutes on this team for two years. JDIII is a shooting guard who's been out for a year. Caupain and Johnson are 3-star freshmen that didn't get any better offers. Let's get real guys...

I agree. Guyn hasn't shown much and JD3 even less. I hope the freshman are better than their ratings.

If there is one thing this team lacked last year (besides consistency from the 5 spot) it was scoring from the bench in general. If JD3 can put the ball in the basket, he will find minutes. I think (and hope) that Mick has a change in focus a little this year. Defense is important but you have to score to win. Mick's comments about Strickland and how he is being brought in to score and that is what he should focus on suggests that Mick may be moving more towards that philosophy. I don't think it will be a dramatic shift but it used to be if you can't defend, you can't get minutes. There are ways in college ball to hide average to below average defenders (just look at Creighton) and if you have a guy who can score, sometimes you have to do that.

I agree, look for all 3 (JD3, Caupain, Guyn) to receive significant playing time. Another thing, if I am remembering correctly, is KJ was announced as a PG when he signed, I believe. I could see him redshirting if they have him be a PG, or if they want the offense, he might even play right away. SG makes more sense for him because he plays like one, but I just don't know if he is tall enough. The good news is, he has beefed up, so maybe he will play some SG. Guyn will definitely receive minutes because of how much Mick loves good defense, but I think he has realized that he needs one of the other two (Caupain or JD3) to step up and help be a good offensive compliment. Micks remarks on Strickland lead me to believe he will probably be in the mix for some minutes and that he definitely play a factor.

Jason don't think you'll see Mick back off on his approach to defense. Your offense comes and goes but defense is mostly effort and if your not playing hard you will not play. He learned that from two of the best. Huggins and Pitino. You won't be hiding Strickland. he will need to defend the paint. Letting the other team score negates your offense.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is much easier to teach defense than offense. While someone can improve offensively, a lot of it is natural. It is much easier to get a below average defender and turn them into an average defender than it is to get a below average offensive player and turn them into an average offensive player. I think that is all Jason is trying to say, and he is correct. Plus, Mick knows defense. He learned it from 2 of the best and that is his calling card, so I think teaching defense won't be that big of a problem....

Jd3 will start at the point in the beginning. He's got 2 years experience at the high level D1 collegiate bball

Now caupain may over take him later in season

Don't count out Kevin Johnson either. He can play

No he has 1.

Everyone Ive ever heard talk about redshirt players always count that as a year of experience. Hes still practicing with the team. Going against starters in practice is better than playing high school ball IMHO. And it is a GREAT learning experience.

Counting wayyyyyy too much on true freshmen. I keep seeing these posts with Strickland, KJ and Caupain starting..I don't see it happening.

He still hasn't played in an organized basketball game in almost 2 years by the time this season rolls around. Learning experience and in game experience are two completely different things. Dont get me wrong Im excited to get JD3 back on the floor. But after everything I've read and heard from Cronin's brother to Coach Davis to Mick himself JD3 is being groomed for SK's backup and Caupain is going to be given the keys to the car from the beginning. Obviously practice can change a lot of things but I just dont see JD3 playing the point.

I don't expect Mick to let defense slide a lot but I could see a player like Strickland or Lawrence play significant minutes this year even if their defense is a bit lacking to start. That was not the case in years past. You can hide anyone defensively by playing a zone. You never hide them completely but you can eliminate the one on one aspect of guarding. My point was that I expect Cronin to get a bit creative this year.

Playing freshmen will cause a little drop off defensively but I don't think you'll see Mick lower the bar at all. You better beable to guard or you won't be playing much. Scoring doesn't help when you give it back on the other end. Mick's teams are built with tough D. That isn't going to change.

I'm hearing the same thing and heard that about JD3 since last fall. I have also heard Caupain will be given a full opportunity to win the job but is not guaranteed anything. The laid plans of mice and men change once guys get on a D1 practice court and play against live high D1 competition. But I have heard Caupain is going to get plenty of reps and opportunity.

Are those things that we've also read and heard and are publicly out there? Or do you have some connection to the coaching staff? Sorry if this is common knowledge on this board but I am somewhat new. It surprises me that the staff would be so sure of Caupain as a freshman

The staff is by no means "sure" about Caupain. That goes, I think, for all coaches towards all freshmen. With Cash and JP graduating they need to find points on that roster to replace those guys. Caupain has 4 areas of his game that are very polished. He can score, pass, penetrate, and rebound. The emphasis on the first 3 is something that is very appealing to the point guard position. Guyn on the other hand I dont think is as polished in those three areas but is one of the best on the ball defenders on the team. So while I think there is no doubt Guyn will see minutes at the point I think the spot is Troy's to lose in the preseason.
