point guard duties

Waite, this was your post on July 1st.....

"If the freshman are better than the returnees they will play. If Caupain isn't better than Guyn we are in trouble.if your freshman are a big part of team, which they will be this year, starting them early on is a good thing because it usually is the softest part of schedule and will allow for growing pains.Nothing Guyn has done in 2 years tells me he is a starting point guard. The whole Mick doesn't start freshmen is BS. Lots of successful programs start freshmen. The talent Mick brought in this year is heads and shoulders above any class Mick has recruited. Sitting them on the bench for guys who aren't their equal is nonsense. If Caupain can't give us more than 2 points and 3 TO every 16 minutes we shouldn't have awarded him a scholly".

You and Mick obviously have a different thought process.
I would wager you but I really don't want your money. I still like my prediction. Plus, does the highlighted section call into question whether we have a successful program or not?
really please take my money. First off I never highlighted that post. Second You went all the way back to 1 July I'm flattered. Tell you what name your price. Whatever you want to wager. I'll say GG is not starting game 1 next year. What is the bet?

Don't get so sensitive Waite. As you and Bearcat Jeff had both given up on Justin Jackson back in April, here was my response on 4/11/13 at 9:39 AM.....

"Let's don't give up on JJ yet. I don't think he's as far away from being good as you think. This year he was pretty disappointing, but I've seen many amazing transformations in one season thru my many years supporting the program. Sometimes the light goes on, or a good start to the season gives the player renewed confidence and the momentum starts to build. He can still be very good next year....and the experience he's gained over the last three years is invaluable. I think we'll see him have a very good senior season".

How much were you willing to wager on that one Waite? So, with that being said, I don't want your money. But, based on the same exact thought process that I used with JJ, I'll invoke that here with GG. I'll predict that he will still be starting in November. He'll be amazing defensively, and his offense will be much improved. For that reason, he'll start under a Mick Cronin coached team.

So your going back and re-reading all my past post for accuracy. Wow!!! I appreciate you not wanting to take my money. L_T not sensitive at all. I don't know about BearcatJeff but I'm really kind of flattered. You must reall enjoy reading my post.

No, don't enjoy reading your posts at all, but it's kind of fun re-living them. And, it really didn't take long at all to find some classics. You post so much that your history goes back only to July 1st and sure enough, one of your first ones was bashing GG and making the same prediction about this year. Fortunately, I don't post as much so my posts do go back to April when I was arguing with you about JJ, so that wasn't hard to find that one either. So, don't flatter yourself. Again, I just try to base my posts on facts and not just disagreeing with someone because of who they are. You've had a lot of great posts as well. But, if we had wagered on a lot of these posts in the past, you wouldn't have any money left to wager on GG now. Honestly, I happen to have the same opinion as you. I like TC, but I'm basing my prediction on the coach's history.

I'm sure Coach Cronin will make what he feels is the best decision for the team. My belief is TC will be starting. L-T certainly everyone knows you only post the facts. I can't imagine why anyone would think you had a hidden agenda. I'm sure they would vouch for you over at Bearcatnews as well. I appreciate you looking out for my financial well being. Your the salt of the earth. Many on here obviously misrepresent your intentions for the program.

Most of the folks who post here are genuine fans who support the program. The Moderators take a interest in seeing the content is good and people behave themselves.

The fact that you took the time to re-read or re-live my post means the world to me. Have a wonderful day.

Lol. Thanks Waite. Appreciate the compliments. You have a great day as well. I do have a hidden agenda by the way. It's called "Just win baby"! And Mick's boys are doing just that! Bring on the Bulls!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, as long as we continue this winning streak the starting line-up won't change. If we were to go on a slide and lose a few games I wouldn't be surprised to see Mick shake-up the line-up. With that said, I think Mick likes bringing Caupain in off the bench and letting Guyn set the tone defensively. Refs sometimes like to get whistle happy to start a game to set a tone themselves and I think Mick would rather have Guyn be in there for that. He is a better defender and while they both foul, Guyn is better at keeping his hands up and that is what refs look for. Also I think Mick likes continuity and the fact that he's been able to run the same starting five out there for every game is a plus. As far as next year goes, I wouldn't be surprised either way if Guyn or Caupain started. I wouldn't be surprised if they both started either. I know we're all frustrated with Guyn right now, but he does have an important role on this team. And I agree with L-T in that hopefully he turns it on for his senior year. Guyn I think right now is forcing things. His shot isn't falling but he's not a bad shooter. He has good form. I wish he would drive more. When he does he is very good at it, he just rarely does it. He's got a nice little floater as well. Again he never utilizes it. I remember Larry Davis being a god awful shooter his junior year and being our shooter off the bench his senior year, I hope Guyn has a similar turnaround his senior year, or even turn it around this year still. I really liked what I saw out of him the first few games this year. He's in a funk. My friend talks to his dad after games and he said his dad told him (a couple of weeks ago) he's been hanging his head alot lately and that he is staying in town more to be there for his son. Take that for what it's worth.

Guyn isn't a horrible defender, but I think his defense is vastly overrated by Mick. It's the one big complaint I have with Mick, although I still think he has done an outstanding job this year. The stats agree-Guyn rates out as a below average defender and Caupain is an above-average defender. According to value add basketball, Guyn comes in at .38 (positives are bad) and Caupain comes out at -1.23 (very good, for a part time player). For comparison, SK rates -1.38, JJ at -4.38, and TR at -2.57. For those interested in these stats, they have been updated since I last posted about them:http://valueaddbasketball.com.

Stats like these are nice and I can be a sabremetrics guy but they also can be skewed. In no way, shape or form is Guyn the worst defender on this team as these stats would have you believe.

I agree he isn't the worst, but to say he is great like some do is also skewed. He is an average defender in my books, and I would use him much less than I would use Caupain.

I think he is an above-average defender, we can agree to disagree. I think the problem is he doesn't get the steals and so on to show he's a good defender. When he's in there, he disrupts the other point guard. He deflects balls and pressures the ball well that can lead to turnovers and bad passes that lead to other players grabbing steals. My main knock on Guyn defensively is when he is driven on and usually on help defense he tends to lower his arms then and picks up the foul, often sending the guy to the line. He's good about keeping his hands up in the full court but not when a guy is trying to score on him. Some of that I think falls on as many switches we do in our defense where he just ends up guarding a much taller player. Alot of his fouls get picked up around the rim when logic might tell you a pg shouldn't be defending around the rim.

Actually, go back to the tapes, see who GG guarded and what their output was. I think you'll be surprised that he's consistently shutting down the opposition's best scoring guards. Caupain is good, but too frequently loses his man. He makes up for some of that on the offensive side of the ball.

I agree CD. Obviously, everyone sees something different with all these players, but I tend to see more of what you're seeing.

Waite is a great fan of this program. That is the bottom line. He and I go at each other....hopefully in jest most of the time. But, I'll say this, I hope 99% of what he says comes true.

absolutely L-T. Part of the reason I post here is to get a different point of view and you provide that.

That's the thing, we all want the same things on here. We bicker about crap, but we are the fans of the team and we support the program. If I'm wanting someone's predictions to come true, though, it will always be BearcatMick's. That man paints a wonderful picture.

Shields21 are you easily annoyed? why would it bother you how much him and I respond to one another. If you don't like the interaction don't read them. Just a suggestion.

I click on a thread hoping to read other fans thoughts about "point guard duties" and realize you two are still bickering about who said what last July. You are right, I need to just ignore it like I usually do. But you are both great fans, so I was hoping it was a better conversation.

I think about that sometimes too. It's amazing how much we argue considering we are all here for the same reason.
