Purdue

Help Support BearcatTalk:

Purdue's bigs are BIG but extremely slow. Hammons was so gassed in their game vs Penn State thet he was out after 4 minutes. Haas is robotic in his post moves and while his rebounding is strong (7'2") he will be over Ellis' and Clark's backs. They have one spot up 3 pt starter and play the same half court O that Cincy does. If our bigs run the floor we will beat them down for some easy lay ups.

That's why I think it's important for Shaq to keep being more assertive and have a good game. His quickness combined with his length could present matchup problems for Purdue.

No surprise everyone is picking Purdue, this is what happens every year in the tourney. Not only does everyone doubt the Bearcats but we consistently get put into tough situations. I know there really isn't an easy game in the craziness of this bracket but every year I feel (although it's not likely) like the selection comittee looks for a way to get UC the hardest matchup. If we can beat Purdue which is very possible I can't wait for that UK matchup. Beating UK in that game( longest shot if there ever was one) would be better than winning a National Championship

You never know, you might get lucky in game 2. Entire team caught huffing coke off of hookers in the hotel room the night before game, complete suspension and post season ban, leaving just the towel boys who weren't invited.

Who am I kidding even those towel boys probably got game on that team :(

UK fans are overly confident, which definitely is annoying. UC fans equally annoying with their constant pessimism.

C'mon NTS, you KNOW the first order of business for the committee this year was to screw us...before they even picked the 1 seeds. How else would you explain our potential 2nd round game!?!? We didn't get placed there bc we have 10 losses, or bc 2 of the losses were to ECU and Tulane, or bc we got 3rd in a 2 bid league and got knocked out of the conference tournament in the first game. It is OBVIOUSLY a massive conspiracy...

I completely agree with NTS. Bearcat fans are amazingly negative. Always. I really can't comprehend it.

I was out for a bachelor party on Friday night during the UCONN game with some high school buddies and I could not believe the constant bad-mouthing of the Bearcats. These are the guys I went to high school with who bled red and black back during the Huggins days. Now they've all turned into Ohio State, UK, Xavier, Michigan, Florida State(?) and Louisville fans. After we lost, I truly believed that UC could never be a national power because even the fans within its own city would not support them. Now, sober, I've realized that winning consistently will bring these guys back. But, it still bothers me how fickle the Cincinnati fan base really is. When you go to Columbus, what fan do you think you'll run in to? Lexington? Ann Arbor? Louisville (ok, there's a lot of UK fans in Louisville), but you get my drift. The point I'm trying to make is that in Cincinnati, you have no idea who the guy sitting to the left of you at the bar is rooting for. It bugs the hell out of me. Ok, rant over. :(

My gut says we will beat Purdue. It's a pick 'em game, but UC has been playing much better down the stretch. It took 6 consecutive made threes and a buzzer beater for UCONN to beat us on their home floor. UC and Purdue play similar styles, so I don't expect a blow out from either side.

I don't think we will beat UK, but I'll keep dreaming we can until the game is over and we've either won or lost. Gotta get past Purdue first in order for UK to even matter.

To naked eye our team is hard to watch.

I would never have picked us to win a tourney game at the start of the year, but here we are with a favorable matchup with Pur-dont, Pur-dueche, etc. I think we can at least win this first round game. This team has come a long way from the start of the year and has surpassed my expectations. I really hope they don't overlook Purdue.

Will the round of 32 game be in Louisville as well? That would be a nightmare for us. Even being close for us, Kentucky fans are so loud and obnoxious. Anywhere they are. And they remind me a lot of Steeler fans. No matter what game you go to or watch, you'll see some random dude in a Steelers jersey. This tournament would be so much more interesting without UK in it

Haven't really seen them play much this year. They have two big 7 footers but they only play 60% and 36% of minutes.

They also don't force a ton of turnovers so hopefully that helps us out.

Maybe conditioning is a factor for their big guys -similar to DeBerry for the Cats.

Got very bored today and decided to watch Purdue's most recent game, against Wiscy. (Take all I say with a grain of salt, Wiscy is very damn good)

Here is what I saw:

Overall: Play like us in a lot of ways, take their time on O and look to get the ball inside, not great shooters but bench guys can knock them down whenever they get a kickout. Two big bodies who work hard to get position and they really love the lob over the top especially to the 7-2 Haas. I would get so frustrated if I was a fan of this team the bigs work so hard for position but the guards ignore them alot, if you thought we were bad at entries you haven't seen enough of Purdue. Couple of nice slashers and get to the line fairly well.

On D only one of whom is really a shot blocker and mostly thats off the help D, he is very good at this though. The guards work to stay in front of their man and funnel to their bigs, especially Davis who is an outstanding defender. Completely clueless in this game in off the ball D, caught soo many times by cutters for easy layups. Too be quite honest seemed like a pretty soft team. In the second half Wiscy clamped down on D and when Purdue started to struggle on O their D was greatly effected and Wiscy started to kill them on the glass. Simply out hustled in the 2nd half of this game.

*side note, god Wiscy is good, they have 1 TO to this point in the game (4 min left)*

Individual players:

Hammons: By far their best player. 7-0 athletic and a great help D shot blocker. Can jump quickly but not great movement laterally, picked up quick fouls whenever guards attacked him in the high ball screen. On offensive works really hard for position and if he gets it on the post he will go to a right hook every time (great touch on it), never showed another move all game. Will take the 15 foot jumper but its not a good shot, its a win everytime he takes it. Big time guy, gonna be a long game for us if Oct is in any sort of foul trouble.

Octeus: Wasn't aggressive at all this game but a quick rangey PG who can attack the basket. Not much of a shooter and only takes them whenever hes wide open. Good court vision and makes some very nice passes. Plays with his hands on D so picks up some cheap fouls but stays in front of his man well when his feet are moving. Good rebounding for a PG

Mathius: Frosh SG at 6-4 can knock down an open shot. Not much of a driver. Really their only shooter in the starting line up. Below average defender, very poor off the ball. This is likely who will match up with Cobb :)

Davis: DPOY in the B10 and it shows. Very solid on the ball, good hands, great instincts. Good rebounder for his size at 6-5. Id be surprised if he didnt match Shaq which would mean alot of TO's. On O he will attack of the dribble and seems to like his mid range game. Scary player for this game in my opinion.

Edwards: 6-8 frosh forward who's gonna match up with Gary, Gary should eat this kid up in the post. Stays behind his man and waits for help from Hammons on D or the double down. Works hard to Rb on both ends but didn't show much offensively.

Bench:

Thompson: short 5-10 burly back up PG. Love to see this kid get a lot of time as he is loose with the ball. I think our length on D would be tough for him. Hard nosed player but the more he is on the court the better it is for us. Can hit a 3 if open and showed a nice ability to finish in traffic.

Stephens: First off the bench 6-6 Soph, nice stroke from deep can fill it up if he gets going. Gotta chase him off the spot as he is much less comfortable on the move. Skinny kid who got bullied a bit on D, average defender with nice length.

Haas: Main backup to Hammons. At 7-2 hes a monster on the court, but a big drop off from Hammons. Slow to react on D and not a great shot blocking presence although he eats a lot of space. Will not leave the paint on D. On offense gotta watch the lob if we front him, he has nice hands and finishes the play well. Not a great rebounder for a 7+ footer and lacks anything substantial in a back to the basket game. (Turnover prone and plays smaller than 7-2 on O)
*One nice thing to note is Hammons and Haas don't play together, so although they have a height advantage at C they match up with our height pretty well elsewhere.

Smotherman: He played a bit but did nothing substantial in this game, can't offer any insight.

Surprises: I didn't realize just how young this team is. They start two frosh 2 Jr and a transfer Sr. so I understand why they had trouble early on. Their main rotation guys of the bench are also young with 2 Frosh and 2 Sophs and the drop off to their bench guys is substantial everywhere except shooting.

Keys:

1. Foul trouble: Deberry would get eaten alive by Hammons, gotta keep Oct in the game. Conversely, Purdue isn't a very good squad when Hammons is off the floor so attack him off the bounce.

2. Turnovers: This team doesn't force many live ball TOs but when they do they run and when they run they get their best shots for the perimeter guys. Secondly, they look a lot like us, bad passes, young mistakes. We have to attack them on D and force them into bad decisions and then score off of those mistakes.

3. Knock down those 3s: They will give you open looks from the outside, someone has to knock a few down, Cobb has shown hes a big game guy and Johnson is coming on. You're gonna be open, ya gotta hit.

4. Confidence: We have guys that have been to the Tourney before, they do not. Show them what that means, play aggressive and stay positive. Purdue has had trouble all season putting two halves together, they are talented but young and if we stay at them they will let us back in the game no matter what the score is at half.

Prediction: I take the game I watched with a grain of salt, Wiscy is a NC contender. That being said, Purdue hung with them in the first half and looked good doing it. As soon as the pressure hit though they were thoroughly outclassed. I think we do the same with 40 mins of our pressure D and come away with the 64-57 victory for the right to get murdered by UK

Post more often please. Thanks.

How you're wrong JD. Hoping there is a little lingering anger over the UCONN game that gives them an extra edge.

However, I do believe that they will lose by at least 20-30 to UK.
