Red & Black Scrimmage

I'm just as excited about Jennifer as anyone, but I think we need to slow down on the hype a little bit. Wait until we play a team with something other than Cincinnati across their chest to see. He is a freshman, he will make freshman mistakes, he probably won't defend as well as Cronin would like. We also have a damn good veteran PG ahead of him, while Troy could play off the ball some, I'm not too keen on him taking minutes away from Cobb, who I think will have a big year. With all that said I can't wait for the season to start. GO CATS, looking forward to an exciting BIG year.

I can tell you Quardri looked like everybody expected him to look. Every freshman started while Quadri sat on the bench. When he was in they took it to the hole on him every time and grabbed multiple offensive boards. He looked as disinterested as ever.

Evans looked shaky at first but really warmed up to the game. He looks smooth with the ball and is more substance than flash.

I don't see too many minutes for Scott unless there is major foul trouble. He will play over Quadri, but anybody will play over Quadri. He had a nice bucket where he seemed competent around the rim, but he just won't play on this team.

Jenifer will be interesting. You can see the offensive talent, he has great vision, he's quick with the ball, he gets into problem areas on the court for the defense. His defense is not where Mick expects defense to be I don't think. That's understandable for a freshman in a practice game, and he actually picked Caupains pocket once when Caupain was too casual with the ball. He will race the ball up the court, but many times most of his teammates were lagging behind so he just had to stop and wait on them.

From the returning players they all looked about what you would expect. Ellis was dominant on both ends, DeBerry is so freaking big and strong, Clark was hustling all over the place. KJ missed a bunch of shots and did typical KJ plays. Cobb hit open 3's. Caupain didn't seem too intense in this one, and not really in a bad way. He seemed like a guy extremely comfortable and played it like it was a scrimmage. He seemed to be having some fun.

Great info. Thanks!

I see the minutes averaging out to this over the course of the season.

Evans 16
Jenifer 11
Scott 6

Also everyone, Jenifer is spelled with only 1 'n'.

We have two very good point guards already. I saw enough yesterday in his passing skills to believe that he is going to be very very fun to watch and will be a very good player.
we don't have ONE very good PG. Jenifer can make every pass on court and give you ball in position to score. NOBODY on team is close to being TRUE pg he is.

Evans will have the most of the 3 frosh by a comfortable margin. Jenifer is going to have a solid career here, but he isn't playing 20 minutes a game yet...
Evans going have games he don't touch court. Your banking on Shaq being a bum this year, I don't see it happening. Mick wants points and assisted points. Nobody on team can give him what he wants but jenifer

Shaq will play 23-27 minutes. Evans will play when he doesn't. Do the math...

13-17? On most nights at best. It's games Shaq could play 32-35 minutes or we go 3 guards. Like him or not jenifer is going to force coaches handnot be giving anything

He's not going to play over Cobb or Caupain. He has a chance to take some of Johnson's minutes but Mick will always favor the veteran. Once we get into the meat of the season, I doubt Scott or Jenifer see double figure minutes.

We're about to see just how good troy really is. Jenifer pushing somebody to bench. He easily should've had 8+ assists yesterday if guys make wide open 3's. He's no slouch on defense either so that's not good keep him off court. The bigs would run to Mick begging for jenifer play if he doesn't get real PT from day 1.

I drove down to the scrimmage at like 12:30 from the west side but traffic was so bad and the roads were being blocked. I ended up not making it because by the time i found parking under 20$ it was 1:30.

Really wanted to go. Next time Ill go way early

I always love how people want to take a freshman to immediately be the starter when you have a really good, proven player already in that position. I'll take Troy over Jenifer right now. Jenifer will have a really nice career here, but he isn't taking Troy's spot.

Either way its all positive.

Troy won't have to play as much as he will have a true point to give him breaks.

these exhibition games and these first few cup cake games will tell us a lot about jenifer. He may ended being a really good PG who just doesn't fit in with the offense. Only time will tell but one thing is for certain, its Caupain's job and its his til he graduates

Historically I would bet against Jenifer being ready for as many as 20 minutes. Specifically because of D and freshman mistakes which Cronin will not put up with. I would guess he will get more like 10 minutes.

However, if...IF Jenifer is the real deal...we will find a way to get him on the court more. That does not mean Caupain or Cobb will necessarily lose minutes...it would likely mean that Johnson will lose minutes. We can play with any combination of Jenifer, Caupain, and Cobb on the floor together without a problem. Foul trouble was not an issue last year with the guards so having two PG's on the floor together is basically a non issue especially when you also have Cobb for emergency.

I have Caupain slated for 30 minutes no matter how many minutes Jenifer ultimately gets. I would guess Cobb gets around 25 either way. That leaves 25 minutes available at the guard positions. Jenifer can get all 10 backing up Troy at the 1 and if he's good enough we can run with JJ and TC together since Troy is capable of playing off the ball.

Not a likely scenario this year but I really hope something like this happens...it can only mean good things.

We also have to remember the style of game Jenifer plays is well suited for open scrimmage type games. Players like him will always shine in those situations. Real games aren't going to be as laid back and open as that.

Regarding Evans playing the 2. To me he didn't look like a guard at all. I think he's only a 2 in an emergency situation. He seems to have the perfect game for SF.

I think if Mick wants to/needs to give Troy a huge number of minutes in any game it will be nice having the option to run Jennifer at the point and Troy at the two. I hope we see Troy play a little more 2 this year at certain times in the game. Troy is a great scorer but was often times way to passive last season at the point. It would be nice to see him spend a little more time at the 2 where he can focus more on scoring and worry less about running point in our complicated offensive systems.

Obviously Troy is going to start the game at the 1 with Cobb at the 2 but having Jennifer and Troy on the floor at the same time in spurts could be an exciting duo.

I agree 100%. This is the type of scenario I would love to see develop
