So, being ranked one of the top 68 programs in the nation, and then losing the first or second game every year means we are relevant?
I see relevance as being in one of the Power 5 conferences. I see relevance as a steady influx of 4 and 5-star players, and some MacDonald's All-Americans and an annual top 25 recruiting class. I see relevance as being a top 25 ranked program almost every season. I see relevance as being frequently in the title conversation.
We have auguably the best team in the Cronin era ready to start the season. It's a team I feel could be elite 8 or final 4 caliber depending on how everything shakes out. Nothing I saw at the scrimmage the other day changed my thinking in that regard. If anything, it strengthened my feelings and got me even more excited. Yet, in spite of returning almost our complete roster from last year, and adding three very good players, we are getting very little respect from the preseason publications. I've seen two magazines. One had us a 10 seed and one and done. The other had us an 8 seed and out in the 2nd round. Neither had us ranked. Nobody cares if you've made the tournament 20 straight times if you can never make it out of the first weekend, and many times not even out of the first game. We search for any little tidbit to grasp onto to make a case for relevance, but the truth is, we aren't relevant yet in the eyes of the nation. We're about to spend many millions of dollars to cut our seating capacity in our arena by 3,000. That doesn't support an argument for relevance.
In spite of all this, I see a light at the end of this tunnel, and I believe it begins with this team. The so-called experts have missed it with this group (in my opinion). I think recruiting has picked up. I hope this season begins a new era in Bearcat Basketball where we see a long run of success and where we become a fixture in the title contender conversation.
