Announced crowd of 7,111.

Little better number than I figured. Bottom line for me is this; it'll be game three or four before we start seeing some real continuity. Just to many new parts and roles. Again I'm curious to see who grabs the two and three spots. That's your missing pieces in the puzzle.

Defense holds first opponent to 37.

Went to the game. Clark and Moore are two very good freshman. Ellis played well but needs to move his feet a bit better on defense. Caupain had a decent game but I expect a bit more. Shaq was Shaq,he was awful. Was forcing things all night and finished nothing. Our perimeter game was terrible but we scored well in the post. If the guards would have delivered the ball better we could have scored many more times in the paint or Drew fouls. They were late delivering ball on many occasions. Cobb and KJ were cold from the outside. Sanders was invisible.Guyn was good early. DM was guilty of some dumb fouls which limited his minutes. DeBerry was not on the floor much.

Our 3 veteran players except Guyn early were non existent.

Quadri Moore reminds me of Draymond Green. I'm excited about him. His defense and rebounding will only improve.

There's a lot of talent on this team. They obviously haven't found their comfort zone yet. Not sure what kind of offense Mick is running. It doesn't seem to generate open shots. Everyone seems very tight within the offense.. Based on Mick's postgame comments, once again, it's all about defense. He's convinced that players get their "Mojo" from playing defense and not from offense. Scoring 52 against St. Fransis with the size advantage we had, and with the talent we have, is just embarrassing. As long as Mick is convinced that it is all about defense, we'll struggle to score. But, I like this year's roster a lot. ButI they definitely don't seem free and loose within this offense. At times they look a little scared to shoot.

They are running a ball screen motion offense similar to what Kansas uses. They aren't comfortable with it yet because everyone is either new or adjusting to a significant increase in their role. It is going to take time for guys to settle in to their roles schedule be damned...

Wish i could have watched/listened to quadris D-1 debut but our high school was in football playoffs so hopefully wednesday i will get to watch on espn3 when they take on morehead st.... sounds like him and clark had pretty good debuts..... so thats pretty exciting... not sure if its a good or bad thing that they combined for 40% of the points scored and 25% of the total rebounds....

side note: saw someones avatar and was reminded that my high school had many battles in the early 2000s with a former bearcat... jihad muhammad...

Quadri has been impressive. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, he has been the biggest and most pleasant surprise. I honestly didn't expect him to contribute much this year.

Forgive me for not recognizing the resemblence between the Kansas offense and ours. I've watched Kansas a lot and would have never guessed that is who we were trying to copy.

Quadri has great offensive instincts. He has a few nice low-post moves and showed off his range tonight with a nice 3-pointer in the first half. In fact, every time Mick talks to the media after practice, Quadri is seen in the background working on his jumper. I also noticed him move without the ball a few times to put himself in the right positions. The only thing that will keep him off the floor is his defense. And, to be fair, I don't think his defense is atrocious by any means -- just not quite on the level of Ellis and Clark. I'm not worried about his defense though because it seems like he is a very smart player who will learn and adjust.

I forgive you for not knowing what you are watching... :)

The offense flowed pretty well in the first half when they shot 54% and assisted on 10 of 13 field goals. In the second half they simply put 5 guys in the paint and even then he post guys were open...unfortunately I saw some of the worst attempts at entry passes particularly from Guyn.

Along with free throw shooting, post entry passing is another one of those things that baffles me about most division I college basketball players. Maybe it's just because I was never the alpha dog on my high school team, but I always looked to get the ball into the post when I was on the wing. Perhaps most college players are just used to being the guy and trying to score every time they touch the ball.

The entry passes were horrid. I remember that being a major issue during the exhibition games as well. Do you think a part of the issue is the guy posting up too?

Things will be fine. Guys are thinking too much instead of simply playing. They will learn a tremendous amount from watching tape of this game. I liked what I saw for the most part.

Octavious Ellis - 5-8 fg, 3-5 ft, 8 rebs, 2 asst, 3 stl, 2 blks, 13 tp (4 t.o.'s too)
Gary Clark - 5-8 fg, 6 rebs (4 offensive), 1 ast, 4 stl, 1 block, 10 tp
Troy Caupain - 2-2 fg, 4-4 ft, 2 rebs, 4 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk, 8 tp (did have 3 t.o.'s)
Quadri Moore - 4-8 fg, 2 reb, 2 stl, 9 tp (Can't play 17 minutes and have 2 rebs)
Kevin Johnson - 3-5, 2 ast, 1 stl, 7 tp

Ellis, Thomas and Caupain had 11 of the 17 turnovers. If you want a number to look at there it is. That many turnovers against this level of competition is 25 against a good team. Time will help with this as they learn the offense better and adjust to life in high D1 basketball.

UC shot 45.7% from the field. They shot 72.7% from the ft line. They shot very poorly from the 3 point line but I do think that'll be an area they will be respectable and not spectacular.

17 turnovers and only 7 offensive rebounds (4 by Clark/2 from Sanders) are both unacceptable. Those are the numbers that trouble me, along with only 11 ft attempts. Cincinnati shot almost 46%. If you keep those 17 possessions, and shoot that percentage, it equates to nearly 16 more points. A very telling stat on how not taking care of the ball costs you. The 11 ft attempts shows me they aren't being aggressive enough but I love the nearly 73% from the line on the shots they took.

Hang in there guys. When you look at the numbers there are some good things and time will help much of the other stuff.

I have said 2-3 times since the game; I'm curious who really wants time at the 2 & 3. I wouldn't mind seeing Caupain, Cobb (4 rebounds/1 ast) Johnson and Mormon on the 3 perimeter spots early. Shaq (0-3fg, 3 reb, 4 t.o.) though physically gifted, mentally has a hard time getting into the flow of a game, and Sanders is a player that does the dirty, fundamental work every team needs but is what he is (role guy off the bench).

I think by the North Carolina Central game the team will look much better and I expect them to look much better against Morehead on Wednesday. Last night was but one step in a long journey.

I listened post game on my way home. What he said was he was very happy with how the team played defense. He even mentioned how all coaches understand you win with defense. On offense the team had trouble delivering the ball to the post. They missed many open players because they were late passing the ball inside. I concurred with him. He also mentioned as with many young players when they miss a couple shots they become hesitant to shoot. He was encouraging them to put it up. He referenced how many shots Kobe and SK miss. Seems you only hear what you want to hear. If your embarrassed by your team winning you may want to find a new team.we have a very inexperienced roster. It will take time.
