I think Mick makes an excellent point about coaches needing more time with the players in the offseason.

head coaches at this level barely run or talk much during practice. It's other ways you could go around spending time with players. I send my 8th grade players reports and skills they could work on.NEVER recruit players that you've never known to practice on their on

Couldn't be more wrong...

Ive been to more than a couple. All the coaches do is talk. THE ENTIRE TIME. Instructing players on every single detail, drill, and play. Stopping play constantly to ask questions, condemn, or congratulate players. Way off base on this one.

I know Mick and LD (I'm sure the others on the staff too) like to stay in shape to be active at practice. I think it was last year, Mick had a defensive video made during a practice and it was very hands on.

Our main goal should be to take better care of the ball. If we do that we will win a lot of games. TO.s this year have killed us a number of times.

When you are #302 in the country in to/possession the problem is painfully obvious. You can't lose the ball on 20% of your possessions - cut that by 5% and this team is really, really good.
With some maturity, & lineup continuity, I expect that to happen.

absolutely agree.

I agree ultimately the buck stops with the coach. I actually enjoy your post.don't always agree but I like to read your thoughts.

The reason you may be in conflict with some posters is that you often overstate your view. A example is your comment now we're giving Mick credit for making this a pretty good season when so many players regressed. Who has regressed??? Thomas Sanders never have been. KJ is still the same or a little better. Who regressed? Ellis,Cobb,DeBerry, TC? Morman did not play.

You'll have to ask Cincrulz11. He's the one who made the point. I just found it funny that he gave Mick a kudo for overcoming players who are playing bad and/or regressing.

I said Shaq regressed, but it's mostly just been in TORate, all his other numbers are pretty similar to the previous season.

My point was simple, most would have thought Shaq, KJ, or Morman would have had to play well this year for us to make the tournament, but none of them really have. Yet here we are.

My point was simple as well. The head coach is responsible for making players better, either by teaching them the intricasies of the game, by working on their shooting technique and fundamentals, by teaching them defensive techniques, by motivating them to put in the extra time on their own, or providing a program to follow that ensures continued improvement. Mick constantly gets praise for teaching defense. He generally gets all the credit for the way we play defensively. If you give him praise for the good, then you have to call a spade, a spade....and also give him credit for the bad. For 9 years the offense has generally been bad. You can't blame 9 years of players for not working on their game on their own. It's obviously the system, and the system belongs to the coach. Shaq, KJ, and Morman have benefitted from Mick's defensive system, and are victims of his offensive system.

From 59-63, UC went to five straight final fours, won consecutive national championships and finished runner up in '63. Does that mean simply making the tournament every year is a failure?

Huggins never accomplished anything remotely close to what Jucker accomplished. Does he get a pass?

How many schools nationally go to bowl games and the tournament almost every year? Life is good and I'm grateful for the excitement and entertainment this team gives me.

Out of curiosity, LT who would you hire as coach if you were AD?

Any thoughts on how WV will make out in the tournament this year?

Again, I agree the ultimate responsibility rest with the Coach. I don't agree that Mick's defensive system is a detriment to the offense. It's about winning. He wins. He plays a style that gives him the best chance to win. He bases his style on the make up of his team. It also is based on how his team has developed in season. As his players improve he'll win more. Most successful programs and Coaches live by, you don't guard you don't play.

Singling out his offense as being bad for 9 years is a reach. If your not happy with the wins and losses I understand. The games are played on both ends of the floor. There is a overall strategy based on the talents of the players. You don't win by focusing on 1 aspect of the game. Is it possible to find players that guard and score, absolutely. In the end I just want a W. He has delivered and improved the program. I think the program will continue to improve. That improvement will come from many places. Coaches, Administration,Players, Donors and Fans. In my opinion Mick has done a tremendous job. I would also bet that many in the profession would agree. If he made himself available he would be hired in a minute.

There are great young coaches and assistants all over the different divisions of college basketball. Examples are....Archie Miller, Shaka Smart, etc. I don't know who is at the lower levels, but every year we see no-names emerge and immediately make a big impact, just like the two I mentioned above, and like a Bob Huggins, and like a Thad matta, and like a Sean Miller, and like a Skip Prosser, or like a Brad Stevens, and like a Chris mack, and like a Buzz Williams, and like a Tommy Amaker, and like a Brian Kelly in football, etc., etc., etc. An AD gets paid to know who's out there, and if he was in that position of looking for someone, I'm sure he would find plenty that could make a similar difference. When Huggs was hired here, none of us had ever heard about him.

As to WVU, I don't know that much about them other than that they play a style of basketball that Mick has always promised us here....up-tempo, run, press, defense, etc....similar to our Final Four team. Huggs has the worst luck imaginable in March, so you always expect a bizarre ending for his teams, but they've beaten many very good teams, so the talent is there. They could be out in the first round, or be a Final Four team. No idea how that team will do.
