Syracuse and Pittsburgh "likely gone" to ACC

I believe we will know what is going on with Oklahoma in the next hour. Things will get interesting shortly.

Edit: The OU President has been given authority to look at conference realignment. He has confirmed this and said that Texas and OU may not be in same league when all is said and done. They are working with Oklahoma State closely, however. The possibility remains that OU could stay in Big 12. In my opinion, this would be the best thing for UC. OU stay put, Texas go to ACC and have UC, UL, and WVU join the Big 12 to get it back to 12 teams.

That would be the ideal scenario.

Here is email that I received from UC President Williams:

Sept. 19, 2011

TO: UC Athletics Staff

FROM: President Gregory H. Williams

RE: Athletics Conference Realignment

Given the developments over the weekend concerning the Big East Conference, I want to make sure that the university community has been informed of our position concerning the conference realignment situation.

I am optimistic the University of Cincinnati will not only remain relevant in the major college football landscape but will also be a strong and committed partner to whatever grouping of schools with which we align. While these are indeed challenging times as several major conferences experience shifts, the University of Cincinnati has a strong athletics program as well as highly respected academic programs, and both are tremendous assets that will serve UC very well as the changing landscape is negotiated.

Our preference as an institution is to remain with the Big East Conference. I believe that the Big East is the conference best suited to our student-athletes' needs and our university's future goals and aspirations. We are not seeking to jump to another conference. At the same time, I do want to assure our Bearcat fans and our university community that UC is not sitting on the sidelines but is and has been working on this proactively to find the best scenario to fit our needs.
As you might imagine, there are aspects of the situation that I cannot divulge at this time. But I do want to emphasize that UC holds a strong position as we move forward because of our competitive athletics programs and our academic programs, many of which are top-ranked.

I want to assure you that while some are concerned that this conference realignment is occurring at a time when we do not have a permanent Athletic Director in place, I have full confidence in Interim AD Bob Arkeilpane. He is fully informed and involved on this issue. We are continuing to move forward on our efforts to conduct a search for a permanent AD.

Please be assured that we are pursuing the conference alignment issue in a manner that will serve the best interests of the University of Cincinnati and its campus community as well as our fans. I appreciate the support and loyalty our fans have demonstrated to our Bearcat teams, and I want to thank them for their continued support.

Says nothing that hasn't been discussed here. As I said, UC has spoken to the Big 12 and probably others as well. Of course not changing would be optimal but only if the league is still viable.

The board of regents at OU and Texas have ok'd the respective presidents to pursue realignment per ESPN.

Big East is also considering Xavier, Dayton and St. Louis as basketball only schools.

No way, what is going on is all about football and money, football is what drives college sports. There is no interest in schools that do not play FBS football. As the New York Times reporter who broke the story about Pitt and Cuse this weekend said on ESPN today, basketball is no more important than field hockey in this Conference realignment.

Just again telling you what has been reported. But your statement makes my point that UC would be better off in a revamped Big 12.

But let's face it Syracuse, Pitt, UConn and Rutgers aren't football powerhouses. The ACC expansion is about building a basketball league that can make up for what it lacks in football while it waits on football to catch up.

The Big East dropped the ball. It drug it's feet and got caught off guard. It's a shame what has happened to this conference because nobody was minding the store.

John Marinatto (sp?) is not respected by the Presidents. If Tranghese was still commissioner, this never happens and the Big East makes the move before the ACC.

With Syracuse at the center of conference expansion news, one might think Jim Boeheim would stick with the script. In his official statement following the news that the school, a founding member of the Big East, would leave for the ACC he said simply, "In the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics, each school has to find the best fit. The Atlantic Coast Conference has a great basketball tradition and we look forward to contributing to that."

Ever the traditionalist, Boeheim can't help but express his feelings even though it is Syracuse that isn't acting traditionally. He told Andy Katz that leaving the Big East would be hard after a memory-filled run in the league.

Speaking in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday Boeheim stated that while he was surprised that this is all happening so quickly, his belief is that super conferences would soon emerge following a high-stakes game of musical chairs.

For Boeheim, it's easy to explain why, according to the Birmingham News:

"If conference commissioners were the founding fathers of this country, we would have Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina in the United States," Boeheim said. "This audience knows why we are doing this. There's two reasons: money and football.

"We're going to end up with mega conferences and 10 years from now either I'm going to be dead wrong -- and I'll be the first to admit it -- or everybody is going to be like, why did we do this again? Why is Alabama playing Texas A&M this week and going to Texas Tech next weekend? And why is Syracuse going to Miami in basketball this week and next week they're going to play Florida State?"

Even as of last summer when expansion was in the headlines, Boeheim seemed incredulous that so many things were changing in the collegiate landscape. In fact he made his statement with a Lexycast, an audio blog service that is now defunct.

"It's really that crazy. Driven by football. Football all the way. And it's ironic that basketball raises 90 percent of the money for the NCAA, and football's making all these decisions. It's amazing really when you think about it."

Boeheim has to accept this new reality, because Syracuse is expected to make financial gains. But as his comments reveal, it's all still a little surreal and a lot to process even for the coach whose school is at the forefront of change.

The basketball only schools are done, that is the end game. When conference realignment is complete there will be 4 Mega Conferences composed of 16 to 18 BCS football schools each. These 64 to 72 BCS football schools will then leave the NCAA, making the NCAA in effect Division 2.

The new BCS organization will then have their own football playoff system and their own March Madness Basketball Tournament, ESPN, CBS, Fox will all fall in line and pay the mega bucks out to the new BCS organization.

The schools left in the NCAA will no longer be relevant on a national basis.

Never thought I'd say this, but Ralph you may be right.

I agree with Ralph too. I have been saying the same thing and think we are about 5 years away from this happening. The NCAA has no authority and they already don't issue the National Champion in football. That is done by the BCS which is completely separate. It's only a matter of time until the NCAA as we know it is no more.

McMurphyCBS Sources tell @CBSSports Big East close to adding Navy before Pitt, SU suddenly left. Air Force also was in play bit.ly/qbGcLA

If UC gets in with the Big 12 rejects, it will be a definite upgrade over what the Big East would have potentially become if this report is true.

ECU has applied to the Big East.

Whoopty-Do! This does nothing as far as I am concerned. According to ESPN, Missouri has informally accepted the SEC offer and OU may end up staying in the Big 12. UC needs to make their pitch to get into the Big 12 if OU decides to stay. If not, the rejects will combine with the Big East so it doesn't matter.

As I have said the past two days a move to a revamped Big 12 is the course UC needs to take. It will strengthen football and keep basketball viable. There is no other recourse of value imo.

I am most interested in what comes from the meeting of the BEast football schools. The basketball only schools are distrustful of the meeting but the actions of a few schools have created an environment where each school has to look out for it's best interest or be left behind. UC cannot be shut out. It has to find a solid place to land.

Well with the news now being that the PAC12 is not expanding that means the Big 12 stays intact for now. If they want to get back to 12 (assuming Missouri goes SEC) add:

UL
UC
WVU
BYU

If that happens I'll be a happy camper.
