Too Soon UL Game Thread?

Anyone who doesn't like 5/3 is just ignorant or was not at or did not watch the game. That place was nuts, best atmosphere I've ever witnessed. Sk asked in post conference about all the games he's played in in his four years he said this was hands down the best atmosphere. He said he's never seen students pack in a student section 2 hours before the game. But still I love this team can't wait till Saturday

Actually yes there is. The initial ruling was out of bounds to Louisville. There had to be irrefutable evidence that it was off of Louisville to reverse the call. It could not be verified thus the original call sticks. Basketball rule 101.

That being said, it was a hell of a game and kudos to the crowd that made our game must watch tv!

But they weren't even sure about the call when it happened anyway. I hate that "you have to see irrefutable evidence debate." In all those close calls, there usually isn't any irrefutable evidence. Does that mean you have to go with the initial call just because that's what they went with when they really had no idea? Just call what you think is the right call. Nothing changed the trajectory of the ball. No idea why they thought the foot did. The ball was just bouncing. There were bad calls for both teams, don't get me wrong, but you can't sit here and tell me that was the right call.

Now that I've gathered my thoughts...

If Louisville plays defense like they did in this game, they are for sure a top 5 team and a National Title contender. Mathiang and Harrell were terrific at blocking/altering shots, and they are good for 6-8 points just off on individual steals and lay-ups. I was very impressed with them. Terry Rozier is awfully good for a freshman PG, Chris Jones has elite break-you-down moves and Russ Smith is obviously the star. The difference between Cincinnati and Louisville isn't huge but where they excel is they have multiple guys that create their own shots either on the blow by drive or from the perimeter while UC has to rely so heavily on Kilpatrick.

I think there is a good chance we see this team again in Memphis, probably for the conference tournament title. Memphis (due to home court) and UConn will obviously be in the mix as well.

The refs fucked us. I was at the game. They took every ounce of momentum out of the game. Honestly it makes me sick. We deserved to win that game. There were other forces that caused us to lose.

UCalum08, hated we didn't get a win today but enjoyed meeting you,your fiancé and future mother in law. Very nice group. Will have to do it again sometime.

My silver lining to this loss references a comment made during the TV broadcast by Greg Anthony. To paraphrase, he said Louisville was able to win last year's NCAA tournament by winning games in which they didn't play well.

I think that defines our effort today. Yes the shot Russ hit is a heartbreaker, but the Cats were in a position to win that game today despite not playing well (aside from SK).

My point ultimately being that, before today I could have reasonably foreseen UC going to the sweet 16, I now think they could go farther by overcoming bad games like they did today.

Aaaaaa it was verified. They went to the monitor and made the decision that it was UC's ball. Then Greg Anthony stood up and waved them back over to look at another angle. They then overturned it again. Just terrible any way you slice it.

As usual your comments are misguided. There is a one point difference in the game and you say Louisvilles lockdown D is far superiorto UCs. Seem to remember UC winning last game against them. You're just one of the few who love to attack this team and coach.

Louisville doesn't need to have good defense when we don't have a good ball handler. They have always been good with their press, but I think our d is better than theirs. Remember, the press isn't just effective when it creates turnovers. If it takes some time off the shot clock, then it can easily cause a rushed shot. We definitely aren't an offensive juggernaut, while U of L is usually a very good offensive team. We have held them to 66 and 58 respectively. They average 83 ppg and they are #20 in the nation in fg %. What we have done to keep their offense in check is remarkable. The big difference today was no points for Shaq in 21 minutes. We needed him, and he didn't really do anything.

With Shaq, it is a mixture of things. It doesn't seem like we make a conscious effort to get him the ball and we definitely don't set a lot of picks for him/help him create his own shot. On the other hand, he has to be more aggressive.

He seems to get too quick when he attempts to penetrate resulting in his losing control of his dribbling. We unsuccessfully drove the lane with a couple of SK exceptions. I've never seen so many rejections or stops against us.

You deserved to be castigated for your post last week. We dominated that game from start to finish on offense and defense and you talked about how if we played like that we would get beat against a better team. Then went on to "berate" the coach for some idiotic bullshit about not playing walk ons. Newsflash if we would have played offense today the way we played it on Wednesday night we would have won the game. We got major contributions from multiple people. Today was the SK show. Obviously the defense was better than UCF but the execution was putrid on offense. So stop acting like some victim of Jeff or anybody else's wrath. Say dumb shit. Get called out for it. Just the way it works.

It was the wrong call. I don't know how they double reversed that one. That was a huge call at the time...but they missed the JJ goal tend too. It is what it is...we can't do anything about it now.

It definitely hit Shaq's foot. But other than that the refs were horrendous. Ticky tack fouls yet no calls when players get clobbered at the basket.

Props to SK. He single handily carried the team to what should have been a win against a very good team. No one else really showed up today with maybe the exception of Caupain. Which gets me to my next point:

Cronin is having a fantastic year coaching but he overplayed his hand with the Guyn and Caupain substitutions. Guyn was just horrible today, including defense. Caupain played very well yet Mick kept going to Guyn. It was obvious who was better today. Between Guyn's horrible turnovers and stupid foul that probably cost them the game.

Sanders played scared, Jackson got owned by Harrell and Rubles continues to disappoint on offense. Yet somehow they should have won the game, mainly because SK is a stud....I also liked what I saw out of Lawrence. Frankly they were better with him out there than JJ.

I had the same thought. Which probably in the total scheme of things isnt true. It does seem though when Justin gets in foul trouble early it effects how he plays the rest of the game. Like he doesnt want to get another foul ever. Cant play that way. His aggressiveness is what makes him so good. Let Harrell get two layups at the end.

Wouldn't this depend on which area the call was made? Near Smith's foot or under Thomas' feet? If the call was that Thomas touched it...then it should be reversable (even if wrong). If the call was whether it went off Smith's leg or a UC leg...then no.

I would like to know how the original call was determined...and then how they got it wrong anyway.

Harrell got away with murder, but JJ has reverted back to playing dumb basketball. His second foul was ridiculously stupid. And his foul on Chris Jones (I think) with a minute or so left was equally dumb.

The other issue I had with Cronin today was why not put pressure on Smith to force UL to have someone else bring it up at the end? UL had no timeouts. Take the ball out of Smith's hands just like UL took it out of Pitino's.

Probably afraid of the blow by to the rim. I kind of wish they didn't have to use those 4 early timeouts but they were all necessary. With a timeout, UofL doesn't score, IMO...
