really think doing what we did sk’s junior year is our best option, with have Yancy gates (eliel Nsoseme) be our big guy who can rebound and the 4 guards specifically fredericks at the 4 because he can rebound the ball well and hit the 3 kinda like (JaQuon Parker) and then have an interchangeable amount of people at the 1-3.

Are spacing was terrible to say the least last night, Tre got the ball twice from behind the perimeter and didn’t even think to shoot, if he can’t shoot from 3 than he has no business being outside the perimeter.

I just dont think its going to be that easy. When that team did it every single player was a threat to score and Parker defended the post well and rebounded very well.

If we use that lineup this year we still only have 2 proven guys that can score in it. While Logan Johnson looked promising he looked more like a facilitator than a scorer at this point of his young career (nothing wrong with that).

I haven't seen much out of Fredericks in the few times I've seen him play.

But really even if we are all dreaming of a lineup like that, we know Jenifer is gonna get at least 20 minutes a game. So sub in Jenifer for Johnson and man is it a bad lineup again.

Broome and Cumberland are going to have their hands full all season. We have forgotten how hard it is to score with 0 inside talent. We are very likely to play 3 guys at a time that can't score. Its gonna be rough.

Killa's Jr year had no threat in the post either. Cash, Parker and Killa ran 1-3 and Jackson (Jr) and Mbodj (Sr) were our bigs. The bigs were awesome defensively, but really no threat to score. Once Cash injured his knee against DePaul, that team started to fade. I would have loved to see what kind of noise they would have made with a healthy Cash.

I can't remember what we were ranked before Cash got hurt, but I want to believe it was around the top 10-15? Anyone remember?

Rubles took 200 shots that year. Between Rubles, Mbodj, and JJ we got 14 points 16 boards a game that year and that was playing in the old BE. That team played 15 top 50 games. I think this year we are projected to play 7.

I think our bigs can give us stats like that against the trash teams, but Im not sure about the good ones.

We will be in big trouble if Scott, Brooks, and Eliel can't chip in more than a combined 14 points against most everyone.

Maybe it was sk’s sophomore year then,

I’m thinking of the

Cash
Dixon
Sk
Parker
Gates

Lineup

I really just want 4 guys on the court that can make a 3 and spread the floor out.

Last year we had 5 players on the floor that could do it, with Tre as the 4 that makes it so we only have 3 guys that can shoot from outside.

I'm not sure we have 4 guys on this team that can hit a three....

For the record.

Logan. Cane. Jarron. Frederick's. Tre.

Is our best lineup...

Completely agree. With Eliel and KW the first ones off the bench.

I'm not a huge fan of what's supposed to be our best shooter in the Cronin era - Trevor Moore. He needs to do better than 1 for 3 every game.

Reading between the lines in post game comments. A lot of talk about Brooks and Scott stepping into their "new roles" (as starters). Cronin talked about how their consistency from game to game will have a big impact on how good we are going to be. Even Cane talked about those two moving into their new roles.

I think we all expected Scott to have a major role. But, on the surface, it almost seems like playing Eliel and running small ball are afterthoughts. We will probably run small when Scott needs a breather.

Sounds like it's Brooks job to lose and not Eliel's job to win. Nsoseme simply outplayed Brooks last night but we all know who the starters are going to be in the first game.

I don't want to make it seem like an exhibition is how you choose your starters but I think many of us thought Eliel was already better (more effective) last year. Neither is a capable scorer but Ellie seems to have a bigger impact on the game when he comes in. He's always after the ball whether it's in the air or on the ground. He's mobile on D out to the perimeter. He has a body that can take a pounding and doesn't pussy foot the ball up around the rim.

I haven't even mentioned Jenifer and Johnson yet...

its tough on freshman. he started out a 44% from 3 in november on 25 shots and then hit a wall that happened to coincide with his playing time being sporadic.

31.7% is not great of course, but evans only shot 33.3% as a freshman. a big jump could be made, he's got the form.

Yah...I don't worry about his shot as much as I worry about how many he will be able to get off and how hurried they will be. We aren't working the inside out anymore. The perimeter will be crowded. Cane and Jarron are going to have to somehow find a way to get in a lane clogged with two bigs (and their defenders) and kick some assists out.

Not a lot to like when you shoot the ball as badly collectively as we did last night. Both from the field and free throw line. Someone will need to step up and be our third scorer Behind Cumberland and Broome. I’m hoping it will be Scott but other the defense and rebounding he looks slow and tentative.

I like our length defensively and it was a positive that when Broome gave up a 3 off the inbounds pass and added a foul for a 4 point play he came out but when he returned in second half he had no such lapes. I thought his on the ballot defense was much better the last year. He also looks better playing off guard.

Sheesh. Yes we didn't look good offensively. Was this the guys first time playing in the new arena? Acclimation! I've said before that this team will be reminiscent of the 14-15 team. Guys just have to feel out their roles and become acclimated in them. We will lose a couple games that we should undoubtedly win and we will win a couple that we probably have no business winning. A lot of moving parts here.

Am I concerned about making the tourney? Right now, yes. However, as you all know, that feeling will fluctuate....this season it will fluctuate on a game by game basis I'm sure.

I fully expect to look different against OSU. I'll panic later...if I need to.

Larry Davis coached the 14-15 squad the last 25 games of the season. Another huge loss to the team. That team played freely.

Near as I can tell the plus minus for Jenifer/Johnson was...

+5 to +22

Obviously some of this is based on circumstance but Logan had the better game. Much of that differential was sparked from his defense. If he understands the system quickly...his height, length, instinct, and athleticism is really going to be an asset on D. I would be interested to see Johnson's deflections compared to Jenifer last night.

I thought Jenifer had a decent game too. He just doesn't move the needle a lot. He's solid and safe.

Agreed that he's solid and safe which worked last year, but now we need a spark

Cane will be in for a hell of a year if he can stay on the court. He doesn't mind finding his own shot (and is capable of doing it) and we are going to need that a lot.

We will want/need him on the court for 30 minutes just like Cumberland. When either of them comes out for a breather it's going to be very very difficult to score.

it worked to an extent. we were still 3-5 vs top 50 teams and 0-3 vs top 50 teams not in the conference. this playing 0 teams with more talent than us.

safe will get you places, but never to your full potential.

It didn't really work last year. It held the Bearcats back.

we won the conference and got a really good seed, which means it worked.

but obviously that team didn't play great against other good teams. you can play it safe when you have clear talent advantages across the board. probably have to take risks when the advantages are smaller.
