I was talking with some friends this weekend while watching the UC football game and the topic turned to the basketball team. A few of my buddies (who are all die-hard UC fans and season ticket holders) said, "As long as we beat X that's all I care about." I was blown away by this comment, have we really sunk this low as a fan base? It used to be that XU fans based their entire season on beating UC. Sure, we'd lose to them every once in a while but we would always wind up ranked in the top 10 with a top 4 seed in the NCAA's so it really wasn't a big deal. You'd deal with the annoying X fans saying we were "#1 in the country and #2 in the city" but it didn't really bother anyone too much because you knew and they knew that we were the better program.

Now I've got UC fans saying all they care about it beating X. I've got my friends who are X fans talking all kinds of sh*t about our losses to Pres and Marshall and I've got no comeback. The truth is that over the last 10 years X has become the better program in the city. They sell out all their games, they win their conference every year, and they make deep runs in the NCAA tournament. It kills me to say this but if you aren't acknowledging this as a UC fan they you are lying to yourself.

UC needs to do something to fix this bball team and it needs to happen fast. 6 or 7 years of being down is a slump, 12 or 13 years and you become an afterthought. I'm not sure what the solution is but we need to find it. Mick needs to look within and right the ship, and if he can't do it then Whit needs to find someone who can. Another season without an NCAA birth is not going to cut it.

We need go get our swagger back and XU fans everywhere need to be put back in their place. Things are getting ridiculous.

Xavier is like a Duke Jr. All they have is basketball so they are the "cash cow" of the school. They have been a good program recently, but over the course of history obviously Cincinnati is leaps and bounds above Xavier. Honestly, with Mick you don't know how good this program can become. I was cautiously optimistic believing if everything clicked right we'd be a top 20 squad. However nothing has gone well so far. The guy has no idea how to coach a team with an ounce of success. I don't care what he tells the guys, they aren't listening and playing like they are entitled to winning.

No UC fan should ever think that just beating Xavier makes the season worth it. Cincinnati should be in contention to make the tournament every year and should be a lock 3 out of every 5 years (being in the Big East, its tough to be a guarantee like we once were). Look at Marquette, they've had some very underwhelmingly talented teams and they've made the tourney the past few years.

Last year Ralph said "We beat Xavier, the season is a success". He seems to be in the same mind set as your buddies. Recently (until last year) it has been a lose lose for Xavier (the same way UC use to look at the game) win the game and its no big deal, they are suppose to win. Lose and you get ridiculed because it was suppose to be an easy win. This year looks to be along those lines again which is disappointing because I thought for sure it could be two top 15 teams going at it but those early season losses makes this game what it has been for X: (except last year) a lose lose. The worst part? UC will come out playing as hard as they can and you know damn well they will come out of no where and play the best ball they have all year. It is definitely a chance to change the season around, beating a top 10 team (If X wins out until the game)

The X fans giving you crap about Marshall don't realize they are a legit team. (UC should still beat them, but they should make the tournament and can win a a game once they get their). Presb. is another story, though. They only had 5 top 200 RPI wins since going to DI a few years ago.

Regardless, it is hard not to look at the UC bball program (fans included) and see they have lost all their swagger. It is hard to have swagger with just one sweet 16 in 15 years.

I always find it funny, but I think its true...

Xavier fans follow UC very very close. If UC loses, I get multiple texts before im out of the shoe. I know several xavier fans who record UC games to watch them.

For me, I could care less what xavier does, I dont even know when they play half the time. UC struggling is more important to xavier fans than anything.

Deep down they realize that UC still remains the Big Kid on the block in comparison.

I couldn't agree more, had the EXACT same conversation/argument with my buddies this weekend. Some are UC fans and some are XU fans. Both games we've lost I've gotten blown up before I've gotten out of the shoe. One of my X buddies even called me while I was at the season opener to make fun of how little fans were in the arena.

I could care less about what Xavier is doing or who they are playing. I believe that deep down all Xavier fans are closet UC fans.

Regardless, what's happening to our program is unacceptable. How people on these boards can accept such a mediocre team is beyond me.

I agree with LL on most accounts. I get multiple texts from Xavier fans after a UC loss.

I am very interested in what XU does though. I have only watched a couple of minutes of them. I am not interested in comparing the two.

Some X fans use UC as a measuring stick.

I will end with most of the smarter X fans I know are far more concerned with X. To me, dont act like you do not care about them. I certainly do.

My old friend All-American George Wilson has always said that the 2 teams you never want to lose to are XU and Miami, you beat them and you have had a great season no matter what else happened, lose to them and it was a bad year. That is why if Kenyon had not broke his ankle and UC would have won the NCAA tourney it would have been a hollow victory as UC lost to XU that year. Huggins never understood that.

What a great thing it will be after UC beats XU this year to tell the XU fans "you just got beat on your home court by a team that lost to Presbyterian".

If X somehow manages to win my line will be "what is the big deal about beating a team that could not beat Presbyterian on its home court".

The Ralph wins either way.

You're the worst

First off, most of the time the only reason I give UC fans crap, is because they give it to X about the schedule ALL the time, then they lose to Presby? I even got texts from UC fans making fun of X for ONLY winning by 6 against Miami.

It's comical to see how much UC fans want to deny the rivalry. You guys claim you could care less about X, until you win the crosstown. Bob Huggins cared about the Crosstown so much, one play even called the week leading up the game "hell week." You would think that would get results, but I'm pretty sure Huggins didn't have a winning record vs X.

It's also amusing to see those who think UC still is the best program in the city. You can't go to 1 sweet 16 in 15 years and claim your the best program. Not anymore.

I agree with the original post to this. I will add that Cronin needs to figure out how to run a productive offense or we will become irrelevant real quick. After watching many college games this year, I can not even compare UC to any Top 25 team because they all look light years ahead of us. I don't even want to think of the shootout this year. Can you picture us dribbling around the key and turning the ball over against X's defense every other possession? I sure can...

Huggins hardly cared about the X game, which pissed me off. I'll admit it, I hate X and I want to win that game very badly. Huggins viewed it as another game. If I didn't have friends that went to X or know people that went there I probably couldn't care less about the rivalry...Of course I'd rather win the Big East and lose to X, but I still very badly want to beat X to a pulp.

Xavier has overtaken UC as college basketball king in this city. But I'm not so sure Chris Mack can sustain that. But with Cronin at the helm of UC, it sure makes it easier for Mack.

UC will always be a middle of the pack Big East team, while occasionally rising up with a decent team.

UC will always be Cincinnati's team, XU will always be the second team in the city, records do not mean much, like the Cubs will always be Chicago's team and the White Sox will always be the second team.

Has XU won 2 National Championships? Until they do they will always be behind UC.

1 sweet 16 in 15 years...Xavier just came off of 3 sweet 16's in a row.

I'm not going to have this debate again, those National Championships 50 years ago mean squat to recruits. In fact, I would argue 3 recent sweet 16's in a row would grab a recruits attention more than two national championships 50 years ago.
