It all comes back to the coach. The fact that brannen brought him in is why people say he sucks.

No.

I like Tari and brannen brought him in. I think Harvey has potential.

But mason is the lowest ranked guard we’ve signed to scholarship since 247 started Ranking guys.

Like I said, he very well might suck. Can we see the guy play at least once first before we are trying to get rid of him? Maybe that’s too much too ask for some

He can’t be worse than some of the guys we’ve seen over the years. If he can dribble, he’s already better than Trevor moore and quad.

I’m not asking the kid to leave in the middle of the year but I am disappointed that part of our package deal left.

It’s like going to Jeff Ruby’s for carry out, being charged full price but getting home they gave you the meal except didn’t include a steak. Sure the baked potato and bread are good but it’s no longer a steak dinner. It’s just a potato and you can get a potato anywhere

And I’d love to be wrong about mason. I’d love to.

So I’ll issue him an apology if he scores a 1000 career points at UC

Who left? Dou opted out and is now back in. You don’t think the same thing that you applied to Dou couldn’t apply to Gabe? Not enough minutes to risk health? Who knows but who’s offering Gabe now if he’s not even playing on a bad team? Let’s just wait and see. It’s possible he wants to be BMOC again and he can do that at lower levels. He’s not going pro so maybe he wants to light up the score board.

Doesn’t matter but we should wait for the facts before we break this all down

If I were a current player, I would be licking my chops at all the opportunity.

There seems to be no Killer Instinct from these guys.

At it's current state, in my mind if you were unable to attain meaningful minutes and become an instant contributor in some shape form or fashion, than the players truly aren't that talented or maybe lack the toughness to see the light.

Brannen has got to get tougher. I think by him kind of bending to the will of the previous coach's "Star Player" may have forever stained his existence at UC.

The left over players have all regressed, and no one wants to take the Team Leadership role.

It isn't a "killer instinct" problem. It is a "these guys are not capable of competing at this level" problem. I don't blame them for coming here, but they just aren't very good. That's what the next 10 years are going to look like. They made a deliberate decision by hiring the guy who would work cheap and please the provincial fans who have an undying loyalty to "folks from around here". South Florida has made the NCAA tournament once since 1993, and their program is in better shape going forward.

Eason is the one I really feel bad for. He bought a pig in a poke, and now finds himself surrounded by guys his AAU team probably would have run out of the gym. His best-case scenario if he stays is something like what Paul Reed went through at DePaul.

I think people are overreacting a bit on the young guys. They've been thrust into the fire, in a season with a shortened summer practice due to Covid. Davenport and Eason have performed well given the situation, MAW hasn't looked bad, Saunders and Harvey have their moments. With a young team this was to be expected.

These are guys who would be quality young bench guys on most teams, but they are forced into the starting roles too early.

The biggest issues I have with Brannen at this point are failure to correctly evaluate and get quality transfers, failure to even understand what is needed from a big at this level and failure to get one, failure to recruit for next year.

On the radio show he was continuing to insist that Vogt will be great and is just going through a slump, I get sticking up for your players, but if Brannen can't see (especially after the Rap debacle) that Vogt doesn't belong on the floor at this level, we have a problem.

Hopefully he can figure it out and turn things around quick. At this point he seems like a mid-major coach who bit off more than he can chew. I thought Brannen was the best hire at the time and still want him to work out, but if we finish with under 10 wins, there will be a lot of people calling for his head - especially if the trend of questionable personnel decisions - specifically starting Vogt - continues.

Vogt certainly isnt in a slump. He’s actually shooting a high percentage from 2 than he was last year.

Vogt is just getting pushed off the block and dominated by stronger and tougher guys.

Guys like Gary, Tre, Justin Jackson, Ellis etc are all smaller than Vogt and yet those guys would punish Vogt in the paint for rebounds & positioning, because they are tough strong dudes.

Vogt is the anti bearcat basketball player in a league that’s kinda know for toughness and not finesse.

But some one this board says toughness doesn’t matter, that we don’t need it.

If Chris Vogt had one ounce of the toughness Gary Clark or Tre Scott had he’d be a walking double double.

But he’s not. He was hand picked by John Brannen as being one of the few continuity pieces for UC and he’s been a bust. Brannen’s insistence on him and his stubbornness on how he plays him is what drive me bonkers.

Imagine taking a guy who barely played in the horizon league abd making him a starter for a team that is multiplie levels better and still expecting him to succeed.

Na Fam.. it’s no slump. It’s he ain’t good enough.

No one thinks Vogt is a long term answer. We got Vogt when we needed a big body and he was good for half a season. Which is better more than most people thought before getting him. Bigs are hard to find. He tried over the summer and struck out but odds are those guys weren’t ready to come in and be great anyway.

Most of the bigs we are going to get take time to grow. Even micks big usually didn’t contribute till the 3rd year

I thought rap would be better. Hard to be worse. What I don’t understand is if brannen wants to press and play fast, why is rap even on the team. Seems like we be better off with any athlete that’s tall and has zero skills

My 2 cents on the Gabe/Mason situation...

On the surface, it sounds like Gabe is just homesick, but looking a little bit deeper I think I can personally relate to what he was going through.

During my sophomore year of HS, I was trying to break into the varsity football team during a tumultuous losing season, and I can remember being in a really poor head space, especially as my individual performances fluctuated. If Gabe is going through anything like that, and you couple all the COVID-related issues surrounding him, I can see why he feels like the best place for himself is back home.

As for Mason, I'm actually really rooting for him. If anybody has listened to his interviews, he's a real confident, intelligent, and personable kid, who apparently plays with a bit of an edge on the basketball court. If he comes out and plays fearlessly (not recklessly) then maybe he can have a bit of a Davenport-effect on the team where his energy lifts those around him.

Worst case scenario: he stands around on the court, adds nothing positive to an already bad team, and we part ways at the end of the season.

Would love to see him thrive and have Gabe come back next season much more physically ready to handle the rigors of high major basketball.

I think the COVID thing is affecting all these guys. Can’t make friends, meet girls, go to parties, can’t even go to class. It’s your room, the gym, and that’s it. And if you’re in a new environment, that has to suck

I would hope he has figured out at most you can have one slow big. The rest have to be able to move if you play man D. Maybe McDonald gave him a false impression at NKU of what can work.

He’s smart. He will adjust. If he doesn’t...it will be a tough road for him

What I'd give to play video games and hoop all day....

As with everything gotta let it play out and see what ends up happening.

As of now we have the best two deep rotations left on the playing squad and potentially two more players who can add depth if they end up playing.

Vogt/Dou
Eason/Davenport
Williams/Harvey
MAW/Harvey
Dejulius/Saunders

Mason and Lakhin who knows. Opting out is Rap and Gabe. Rap I would assume is gone. I think there is hope for Gabe to return but who knows. Maybe not this year.

Happy New Year to all! May the team and coach find some positive momentum in 2021 and beyond!! I am not writing anything off just yet.
