What’s awful about opt outs is if Gabe doesn’t tell us early that he is staying or leaving then we won’t know how many open scholarships we have available

Huggins had people quit all the time...

I think one thing is clear. John brannen ain’t Bob Huggins

So we likely can leave those comparisons at the door. Huggins and micks guys went to war for them. CJB has yet to produce a burning fire to win in his players.

They are not the same.

Nice.

Gabe is likely gone. No 2021 class, and his less talented, less recruited brother is still with the team.

Maybe Gabe’s plan was to do his bro a solid and get him on a high major then move on.

I’m kidding.

But for real do. Y’all ever notice how winning teams rarely have players opt out in the middle of the year.

Something is broken in the locker room where kids would rather stay home then play basketball.

Gabe opting out for Covid makes even less sense since he already traveled with the team and doesn’t have a baby. I could at least understand Dou. With Gabe... I dunno

If im being honest. once I heard that mason is a bulldog and works hard, especially on D and gabe lacks the defense I envisioned Mason being a better college player than gabe.

But for gabe to opt out is rough. people can say covid(bullshit). If this team was winning noone would have left and if gabe was playing, no way he opts out.

Gabe opting out, after not being able to see the floor, isnt going to do him any favors. He needs to be battling in practice and with his guys if he expects to get any better and "battle tested" for next year.

If it’s for Covid then that’s his choice.

But If it’s for playing time, there is no way your going to get better by not practicing with the team.

Gabe likely has more transfer options than mason. Mason likely never gets a offer from any better then UC

I knew letting kids go home for Xmas was. A bad idea. Kids get homesick on what amounts to an empty campus.

Something seems off.. despite limited playing time.. he was a huge cheerleader every game. He was also very high on brannen.. I'm guessing something is going on.

But agree. He needs practice reps. He's never going to be a great athlete and needs to learn how to adapt an be in better position vs d1 athletes

With that being said, why is he at UC? Looks like they need to step up scouting, because looking through these "Horizon League" Lenses, I only see soft recruits.

There is definitely reason to question Brannen's player evaluations at this point. It also seems like the locker room might be having problems. I don't know if Brannen is promising guys things, or just poorly evaluating them.

Rap came in expecting to start at the 4. Rap started at the 4 last game, looking back that was almost certainly a last attempt by Brannen to give Rap what he wanted. Rap had already been tried at the 4 and failed, but Brannen gave him another chance. It obviously didn't work again, but seems like Brannen gave Rap some favoritism.

Diarra had the baby, but playing time was almost certainly also a major issue, he likely expected to be the backup 5 and getting at least 10-15 minutes per game. Instead, Brannen shifted Rap over to the 5 and Diarra got only spot minutes.

Gabe likely came in expecting to get at least some minutes and instead ended up on the bench.

Under Huggins/Cronin it was made clear that you earn minutes through hustle, defense and practicing hard. Under Brannen it is less clear what earns minutes. Rap defended poorly and was an offensive TO machine and got minutes. Vogt is a poor defender and can't rebound and gets major minutes. Gabe barely got a chance to play before being benched for multiple games.

Maybe Brannen is seeing other things in practice. But it seems to me that he allows some guys more say and gives them more leeway. Playing favorites (especially to a guy who is a bad player) is a good way to lose a locker room quick.

Regardless of what happens now, Rap leaving, Gabe opting out and even Diarra coming back is a bad look. It looks like a coach who is losing control. If Diarra comes back and outplays Vogt/Rap, it leads to more questions about Brannen's ability to evaluate players.

Let's hope things settle down, right now nothing is inspiring confidence in Brannen as a coach.

The twins leaving is odd. Rap, I don’t care at all. But it’s been 7 games for the twins, and one of them was hurt. I don’t care how bad a coach is, 7 games and about 2 months, isn’t enough to make any decisions. What could have possibly happened?

What favorites have played beside Vogt? Even that one, it’s not like dou has wowed anyone. When dou played well, he played. When he didn’t play well, he didn’t. Yeah, he could have been given a more time but who else would you consider a favorite?

I mean maw was given the starting spot very early in the season. Eason also. Seems to me if you play well, you play. Not many options with the front court though

Wait they are both opting our or just Gabe ?

Sounds like Mason is definitely still with the team and is expected to start playing soon.

Haven't seen a legit update on Gabe yet.

Per JB Rap is gone, Dou is Back, Mason is out of the boot and practicing, no mention of Gabe. Either way this is just such a weird season and as much as some of you think Dou is the second coming, I don't think he can be much worse than Rap was. My expectations of this season were and still are low but hopefully we can start to get a few wins and get these young players a little confidence.

Rap leaving likely doesn't hurt too much considering he has had possibly the worst 7 game stretch that I've seen in my lifetime. I do believe as the season progressed things would slow down for him and he would have been valuable. Diarra isn't much better but at least he is athletic and still has a little bit of time. Also doesn't shoot as much.

Madsen's leaving would suck but I doubt that will happen. Even if Gabe leaves my guess is it'd be temporary for personal reasons. Those two have been the biggest chearleaders (granted, so was Trevor Moore). Way too early for them to expect playing time and I highly doubt Brannen made false promises on that.

Hopefully the young players stay along for the ride. There will be lumps but the young players show a lot of promise, it's the players that have been around and the stop gaps that aren't holding down the fort.

I think Rap leaving alleviates a large portion of Brannens minutes problems. Eason and Davenport should play the 4. Dou makes for a better 5 replacement.

The Madsens aren’t playing now so it doesn’t affect play on court either way. Opting out would be fine. Just as long as it’s not really a transfer situation. Doesn’t seem that way.

Gabe just officially opted out.

Y’all think he’s coming back?

Ya never know , but I think with the way college sports is now with transferring basically being like free agency, I think he might be gone and I couldn't imagine Mason staying with out him ( hope I'm wrong) because he didn't have many big time offers. He is claiming mental health and mental health is a very real thing especially during these challenging times.

I think if he’s brother was leaving too it would be far more concerning. But since his brother is staying, it’s sounds like more of an individual problem. It has to be hard mentally, going to college and not being able to do anything that is fun about college. Even the games are glorified scrimmage games. Putting in all that work and not even being able to enjoy playing in front of fans. It’s a weird time

Honestly if Gabe is for sure gone then I want mason to leave to. We would have never offered mason by himself. We offered as a package deal and the best part of the package just left.

Mason is lowest rated guard that UC has ever taken that I can find in the 247 sports era.

Lower than Trevor Moore,

So if it’s taller better brother couldn’t get on the floor on a 2-5 team. I’d think he’s gonna struggle as well.

He can walk on if he wants
