I just say it’s a toxic locker room because in 2 seasons we’ve had 4 players leave mid season.

And what’s more concerning is brannen put on the full court press for Rap the moment he went on the transfer market. He was a guy that brannen targeted as someone who fit his style and he maybe leaving after 7 games.

I think it sets a weird precedent that grad transfers may not fit into this program very well.
I think it’s a fair question to ask, what is going on.I don’t really care if these guys leave, most of them are terrible but he it’s still weird that they are leaving in the middle of year. Especially rap, he brought the guy in. Things don’t appear to be going well.

Yea, he was an assistant coach at the highest level of Basketball and he was a coach in the development league.. besides that yea he was an excellent player former PG court general, he competed against likes of Micheal Jordan, Scottie pippen. Played along the likes of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'neal and has been indorsed by future hall of fame coach Bob Huggins and previous successful coach Mick Cronin. So yea, hes pretty qualified too me

Patrick Ewing played with the best players ever. Also an assistant at the highest level. He’s terrible. Penny isn’t exactly doing great. Just because you play with good players has nothing to do with coaching.

Aaron McKie at Temple also appears to have an uphill battle ahead of him.

On the contrary, Juwan Howard is doing well at Michigan and currently has the #1 overall recruiting class for 2021.

Chris Mullin had St. John's on the up-and-up with top 50 recruiting classes year-after-year but resigned recently after his brother's death.

Georgetown has had a rough run under Ewing but that could turn around with their 2021 recruiting class currently ranked 13th.

If there's any trend with these NBA players-turned head coaches, it's that they are able to create a significant recruiting buzz.

What would catch your attention more as a recruit - "Hey, this is John Brannen, head coach of University of Cincinnati" OR "Hey, this is Nick Van Exel"

I work with a guy in Brooklyn and when I told him I was Bearcat fan he told me he named his son Nicolas, partly after Nick Van Exel.

Brannen was the safe hire and the jury still remains out on him.

Van Exel would've been an exciting hire and I can guarantee he would've brought a different energy to the program. Maybe he'll still be available a few years from now.

That said Brendel mentioned on a publicly available podcast that either one of two things happened at practice this week

Dou returns or Rap left

Wouldn’t say which.

My guess is that Rap left but Dou and coach have worked out their differences.

And I see no reason not to run Dou out as your starting 5 msn with Eason and see how it goes

Dou’s numbers are really good but in limited minutes. I’d like to see him given the same leash he gave to TO machine Rap

The main problem I see is that Brannen didn’t recognize he could not play Vogt and Rap together. Otherwise I am sure Rap is a better fit than Vogt.

Dou quit and two under class men are playing better at the 4. The only thing that could have been predicted there is Eason eventually beating him out. But that happened fast. Rap probably thought he would play better...he’s a turnover machine who’s not shooting at a high clip. If he were not a liability on offense I am sure things would be different.

Outside of not spotting the defensive issue with Vogt in at same time I am not all that concerned right now

Yeah, the main issue I’ve had with brannen is noticing what seems like obviously things. Playing rap and Vogt. Pressing with Vogt and rap. I don’t even have issues with them playing but they can’t play the way he is asking them to. Just play a 2-3 zone and let teams see how many 3s they can shot.

I think his recruiting has been really good so far. If he was able to continue that over 4 years, could have a serious team. He won’t make it that far if he doesn’t change some things though

If dou is back, why not run him out there. Not like Vogt is doing anything positive at this point

I dont think Dou starts. And i dont think Dou is the savior for this team. He might have flashes and potential, but hes never shown it for an entire game and the times he was on the floor this year he looked like the freshmen from two years ago. Hopefully he puts it together and becomes the guy we all hope he can be.

Also, Dou coming back, I dont think you see him as a starter yet for another reason. He didnt quit because of covid(or he wouldnt be back). He quit the team and his guys. Dont think you reward that by making him a starter. He is most likely going to have to work his butt off even more than ever before.

I don’t think he’s a savior. Don’t think anyone thinks that except for skyblade. But Can’t be any worse and it’s something different

Dou brings athleticism to the front court, whether at 4 or 5. That is something neither Vogt nor Rap could give the Bearcats. He just needs to be more consistent and less volatile. And stay out of foul trouble. If he is coming back, he should have to earn his playing time back, IMO.

Dou returns.. justin owes me a public apology.

Agree.

He also claimed Jarron wasn’t hurt last year when it was clear that he was. But he didn’t want to give brannen any excuse. 2 weeks later it came out he was hurt. He never apologized for that either,

I don't think he's a savior, but that he is our best hope. We've seen that Vogt can't do it, we've seen that Rap can't and Eason is going to be seriously overmatched if he starts at the 5 (not impossible, but would be a major challenge).

Diarra showed for stretches last year that he can do it. Brannen gave Rap three times as much leash as he gave Diarra. Hopefully he gives that leash to Diarra now.

I think the best ceiling for this team was rap and Dou returning and both playing well.

While i thought Rap sucked in a lot of ways, he did lead the team in defensive rebounding percentage and was top 100

I am not too surprised that Rap is leaving. He wanted to play the 4 and for some reason Brannen believed he could - despite him obviously not having the athletic ability.

I did think he would play better at the 5, but he was a disappointment there as well. I'm guessing Brannen had some conversation with Rap recently about cutting back his minutes and that combined with not playing his preferred position was the final straw for Rap.

As for Diarra, I'm obviously glad he is back. There will definitely be questions about him leaving the team and whether it was Covid or minutes related. My guess is both and I am okay with that. He likely wanted to be at least Vogt's backup and when he was told he'd be our third-string center he figured it wasn't worth risking his health and that of his baby for minimal minutes.

Now the baby is a little older, he will be getting more minutes and Rap is gone. At this point, barring a miracle the season is basically over. Preparing for next year should mean that Diarra gets starting minutes at the 5, Eason at the 4 and they learn to play together. Vogt isn't going to save this season and won't be here next year, so might as well minimize his minutes.

He’s also shown for stretches that he can’t do it. I hope he’s great and at this point, why not. Throw him in there and see what happens.
