WSU Round 2

Sometimes our second unit looks smoother on offense and defense. Makes me excited for next year.

Honestly, if any big gets switch to a guard, they are either going to blow by them or shot a three. Bigs can’t guard quicker guys. This is my main problem with whole argument. 95 percent of bigs can’t do anything in the situation.

Most bigs manage better than Vogt. Maybe I'm biased since Cronin prioritized bigs who could defend guards, but I see a lot of other teams with bigs who can play at least okay defense against a guard. Vogt just has no chance.

I still say a good portion of the fault lies with Brannen. Play a defense that keeps Vogt in the paint and protects him from other teams using the pick-and-roll to attack him.

Agree, if we had one more big I’d like it a lot more. Hopefully one of the madsen kids can be that scorer off the bench

Yeah, we need at least one more big. I think next years team will be fun to watch, but I'm not sure they will be that good. It all depends on how quickly they can stop making mistakes. Our bench players have periods where they look great - better than the starters even - and other times where it looks like they don't belong on the floor.

You have to get out of the cronin mindset. He runs a very unique system that allows he to switch everything. No one else does that. Most college bigs can’t guard guards. They could be move mobile than Vogt but they are still going to either get blown by or shot over.

Vogt was very good at post defense today and has been good at post defense for most of conference play. The problem is when Vogt has to defend on the perimeter. The first half Vogt was once again exposed on pick and roll defense, second half he was somewhat better but still had some mistakes. I believe they got Vogt switched onto a guard twice and both times his man drained the three over him.

How is that not just as much the fault of the guard?

Also brannen isn’t telling them to switch, it’s basketball. Sometimes you rotate and get on someone you can’t guard. That’s basketball. Yes I’d love to have 5 Kenyon Martins out there. Those guys don’t exist and if they do, they are hard to find.

Well, they will all have a longer time with Brannen and his system. I think they will be pretty good... hinging on Eason being playable quickly

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d like to see how we’d look with Vogt coming off the bench, I don’t know if he’s injured or what, but he was terrible today, he has to have some type of nagging injury or something because he has been flat out terrible

In a perfect world he would be a bench player. I did find myself thinking about a small ball lineup with Tre. When he was scoring I didn’t think it was possible but if he isn’t scoring I think it’s a possibility. I have to think he will at least start making layups again.

Tre can't guard the post as a 5. I think in the offseason the thought was that he could, but any time we've tried it this year he's struggled a great deal.

We legit have 1 post defender on the whole team. And he did a great job at it today.

Vogt did his usual play well on 1 end of the floor. He just played well on the one we aren't used to.

We don't have anybody else that would have provided any resistance to Echenique in any way today

Diarra played 20 minutes against WSU when we beat them at their place and did relatively well at defending Echenique. If I recall correctly we doubled to help him in the post, but we frequently double to help Vogt outside the post, so that balances out.

I'd like to see some small ball lineups with Scott at the 5, Vogt as a big who is used situationally if needed for defense (such as against Echenique) or if he plays well on offense.

Unfortunately, the 3-4 games after the Wichita game, diarra was unplayable. He isn’t there yet. It’s not as simple as giving diarra all the minutes. For as bad as you think some players are, we see the same thing with diarra.

Falling for 2 ball fakes from a guy who shoots 23% from 3 is not good defense, echinique was held to 2 field goals made because we doubled him every time he touched the ball, Vogt was terrible in every aspect today, there’s no defending his play today

big L on that take

Based on the lack of reaction from players and staff, I was thinking the same thing. It's probably sort of like Jarron's injured heel, they all know about it, but there's nothing to be done other than let him play through it. I forget which arm it was in the UConn game, but it was definitely the left one this game.
It was the left on a hook and hold take down. Also, this isn't the first time I've seen him trying to stretch out the left shoulder. Hope it's not a rotator cuff injury. We need him through the remainder.

I don't think we played great in any aspect of todays game.

But we won so that's all that matters.

I still think this team falls in love with themselves when they make a few shots on offense and forget about Defense.

There were so many times, we'd score and extend the lead only for WSU beat us down the court, get us scrambling and then find the open guy.

1. We need play 40 min of Defense to beat Houston and finish strong. IF we want to make the tourney and also win a game, we need to do it from that end too.

2. Maybe this rest will help us do that. It just sucks that the AAC set this up so Houston also gets the rest and has no games all week til UC.

Just need to a find a way to string together multiple defensive stops WHILE the offense is working. They never seem to have any synergy with each side of the ball

Asking Diarra to play the 5 when he's more of a 4 like Scott isn't wise. I think Diarra is actually a little bit more athletic than Scott. Given time Diarra will be a good player, Scott looked bad early in his careeer.

I thought we lost you. After wins we don’t hear from you as much. I feel like if we would have lost you would have been on here talking about how brannen got work by Gregg Marshall or about how sad the program is. But we won.
