Help Support BearcatTalk:

Now that he has actually committed, how do we go about getting him a scholarship? That is the next big question

Now three questions....

1. Who leaves or goes to prep school to open up room for him?
2. Is he a for sure one and done? Or does anyone believe he could stay 2-3 years?
3. Is SK coming back? Because if so this team could be amazing next year.

WOW!! Made my whole day! Can we squeeze one more year out of Cash some how? The team will have size and athletes.. I am more excited about this one than Stevenson because there is more of a supporting cast now... This kid could play for any team in America..

1. This will work itself out. I believe the "Gaines is gone" talk should be over with Mick talking about how excited he is with Gaines progress. Does Morman qualify? If so you have to look to a transfer, early entry, or somebody going off scholly but staying on the team.

2. I think he'll be here 2-3. If he's here 4 it means he never bought in to consistent hard work which is the only knock I've heard on him.

3. Personally I believe Sean will be back, but I know he has personal situations that may require otherwise.

We will lose Cheikh, Parker and Cash. All 3 are important loses but none bigger than Cash. If point guard is solid and SK returns they will be very good again and athletically could be special.

Hopefully what you said on SK and Lawrence are true. But I'm with you our biggest question next year is PG. I don't really trust Guyn. I hoping Caupain can come in and contribute right away at PG.

The Cincinnati Bearcats received a commitment on Sunday from their No. 1 recruiting target, ESPN 100 power forward Jermaine Lawrence of Springfield Gardens, N.Y.

Ranked the No. 19 overall prospect in the Class of 2013 by ESPN, Lawrence pledged to Mick Cronin's team over St. John's and will move the Bearcats to No. 24 in the ESPN class rankings. UNLV was also in the mix for Lawrence.

From the start of last year's spring recruiting period, Lawrence had been the top target overall for the Bearcats. Despite being sidelined with a wrist injury that would later require surgery, Cronin and his staff remained committed to Lawrence. They realized it was an all-or-nothing situation with the power forward and that the backup plans were not plentiful.

Lawrence saw exactly what Cincinnati thought of him.

"When they started coming to my school, they made me feel like they really wanted me," Lawrence said. "I was definitely their guy."

In late July last summer, it became apparent Lawrence's injury was more serious than previously thought. At the Elite 24 showcase in August, Lawrence attended but did not play. He would later have surgery on his right wrist and didn't return to action for Pope John XXIII High School until last month.

During his recovery process, Lawrence continued to debate the merits of St. John's, Cincinnati and UNLV. The Rebels had former AAU teammate Savon Goodman on the roster and were factor. But in the end, it was down to Cronin's Bearcats against Steve Lavin's Red Storm.

"It was back and forth," Lawrence said. "It was hard to make a decision. St. John's is my hometown school."

Regardless, Cincinnati has done well with NYC talent. Former Bearcats players Kenny Satterfield and Lance Stephenson, both McDonald's All-Americans, were from New York.

"New York City players have gone there and then been comfortable," Lawrence said. "I started thinking, Why can't I be comfortable there?"

Lawrence becomes the top-rated recruit in a Cincinnati 2013 recruiting class that also features point guard Kevin Johnson (Cincinnati/Summit Country Day), shooting guard Troy Caupain (Midlothian, Va./Cosby), small forward DeShaun Morman (Washington, D.C./Faith Baptist Christian) and center Jamaree Strickland (Oakland, Calif./Queen City Prep).

Guards:
Davis, Guyn, Morman, Caupain, Johnson, SK

G/F:
Sanders, Thomas (I expect them and Morman to fill a role like Parker does)

Forwards:
Rubles, Lawrence, Jackson (Rubles and Lawrence could play the 3)

Center:
Gaines, Nyarsuk, Strickland (I think Strickland will be a good low post scorer in time)

This is a very athletic team with multiple parts and pieces to interchange. I hope Davis or Guyn are good enough to start at pg and Caupain or Johnson can play 12-15 minutes a game. The team will be young and talented and very athletic. If SK leaves who emerges as a leader? PG and leadership is what everyone needs to look at. They will be the key to next season.

Jeff it seems when the national press talks about our recruits they constantly mention Johnson as a PG and Caupain as a SG but on these forums it is reversed. Any feeling on who is better suited for the point?

I think they see Johnson as a pg because of his size an quickness. I think Caupain will be more college ready and he is a good distributor so that is why I mention him here more. KJ has the skill set to play point and many people think he will be an impact player because of his physical gifts. I think either of them could play both.

A St. John's forum was saying they cannot believe Lawerence chose a program on the decline. Didn't UC just almost beat Syracuse at Syracuse? How far did St. John's go in the tournament last year? Oh, wait... This is a program on the rise, especially with players like this. I have read a lot of great things about Strickland, and I know Mick is high on Maupin.. I guess I just don't see the decline part. If UC gets the right matchups in March, we could be looking at a legit elite eight team.. Decline? Huh?

When St John's landed obekpa last year a lot of people talked bad about st Johns. Don't read too much into it. They just lost a hometown kid to cincy. They will get over it.

Jermaine Lawrence has picked UC!!!!

Yessssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!! I smell another great year next year! Guyn can suck all he wants, but we still will have this guy, SK, Jackson, Big David, JD3 will still only be a sophomore, the future is bright, Bearcat fans! Can't wait to go to Deveroes now! Like I said, I love this year's team, but next year could definitely be even better, especially if Strickland has real post moves and Lawrence does well.

I felt like a kid on Chrismas morning today. What a great job done by Savino and Cronin. Hopefully this gives us momentum in the recruiting game moving forward. I also wonder if/when other univerisites will start to look at Savino as possible HC candidate. He deserves it and he is a great coach.

The question now is who out of the 5 recruits and current roster is the odd man out?

Incoming:KJ, TC, JS, DM. JL

Departing:AE, CW, JP, CM

Returning:
GG, JDIII, SK, KG, JJ, JS, ST, TR
