Cincinnati has offered 2014 Saddleback (CA) JUCO point guard Austin Pope.

6"6' PG from Compton.

This I like. 6'6 PG would be a great addition. Those rare PG's that have height are big time gets. Mick needs to stay on this kid.

What's your point? Biggie McClain was 7'0 tall. Height doesnt always mean skilled. Need to hear scouting reports and see video before you can tell a little bit more about him. I hope he is really good, 6'6 is promising, but can't say anything yet.

After a great performance at the West Coast Collision Showcase this weekend, Saddleback's Austin Pope, who was formerly committed and signed to play at Colorado, was named the number 1 JUCO point guard and number 6 overall JUCO player in the country. Austin went for 12 points, 15 assists and 4 steals at the showcase. As a 6-6, 200 pound point guard, Pope is definitely a unique player that is only working to get better.

Each morning, Pope wakes up and gets up plenty of shots, as well as works on his ball-handling ability and lifts weights. His afternoon workout consists of more shots and skill-set drills. And his nightly procedure is some sort of cardio, whether it be running hills or running suicides. Overall, Pope wants to gain more consistency in his jump shot, his strength and improve his defense.

Pope is very grateful but still not satisfied about his new accomplishment:

"It doesn't matter. I want to be the best point guard ever and overall be the best player I can be."

As a result of Austin's hard work, many schools have taken an interest in his talents. Since he's joined Saddleback JUCO, UConn, Marquette, Texas, Georgetown, UCLA, USC, UNLV, California and San Diego State have reached out. Washington State, Oregon State and Colorado have extended a scholarship offer.

So far, Pope has no leaders. Schools like Marquette, UCLA and USC have spoken to him about taking a visit.

In college, Austin wants to play at an up-tempo school who allows their guards to run.

That's more like it.

Biggie was hurt his entire career........What's your point?

Must've been hurt from when he was dropped on his head as a baby, because he makes Gaines look like Shaq. Biggie just ran slow, he wasn't hurt....

Chronic foot injury actually. Use your computer skills and look it up before you throw garbage at me again.

Yeah, lots of players have plantar fascitis, he was ineffective because of himself, he never developed and was always overweight.

Biggie had bone spurs that kept flaring up on him during all four of his years at UC. Think that hampered his development more than his work ethic (if that's what you mean by "because of himself"). Mick commented on the problems caused by the spurs, as well as praised Biggie's work ethic, throughout Biggie's UC career. Mick did repeatedly say that he would've liked Biggie to play with more confidence, and that seemed to be his biggest criticism of Biggie. But, as far as I can remember, he always described Biggie as a hard worker, despite any physical limitations that he may have been faced with during his time at UC. (Again, if that's what you meant by that.)

Side note: Looks like Biggie's in Slovakia now (not sure on the bone spurs situation, but playing 20 mpg, it would appear that it's improving/better): http://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/conferences/Big_East_Conference/4/Cincinnati/63/In_The_Pros

Looks like Pope originally committed to Louisville, before signing with Colorado: http://future150.com/hs/basketball-news/austin-pope-to-louisville-will-play-in-2014

Not UC related, but a Stubblefield mention in one of his interviews:

"C2C: So you recently got offered by Oregon, how did that come about?

Pope: I had been talking to coach Stubblefield about their program and how I could fit in there, and when they were down for the Pac-12 Tournament is when they offered me."

Another side note (not UC-related): It appears that Pope played with Norvel Pelle at Los Angeles College Prep. For those that may not remember him, Pelle was a highly touted recruit who committed to St. John's, didn't qualify, then committed to Iona (over DePaul), but didn't qualify there either. Now, it appears that he's entering the NBA Draft after playing at three different prep schools: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-dagger/norvel-pelle-remains-mystery-nba-teams-turning-pro-172046878--ncaab.html

Just thought it was an interesting recruiting story.

I get your point. Plenty of stiffs that are tall. Jason Bennett (7'-2", Kansas State), John Reik (7'-4").........and many others.

I like the idea of a tall PG too. But just because the kid is 6'-6" doesn't mean he can play it. I look more at his college offers, and the kid has good ones, so he probably is legit.

Exactly, height doesn't mean everything, but it is definitely nice. Not a lot of PGs are 6'6, so it will give him advantages and disadvantages. He will have the height advantage with pretty much everyone he plays against, but some of the smaller, quick guys might be able to get past him/pick his pocket every once in a while. Will be interesting to see how his recruitment develops.....

I like PG's who distribute the ball, avoid turnovers, can guard the oppositions PG,break pressure, run the offense, hit the open trey and act as a extension of the coach on the floor. If he can do that don't care how tall he is.

LOL!!! thats a very good thing. If he plays like the Cuse's Carter and is tall I will be estatic.
