I guess so! I mean if we passed on Terrell and Carrington JUST because Mormon qualified it shows you how much the staff likes this kid. Why do I say that? Because we have SK, Davis, Johnson, Thomas, Sanders, Rubles, Lawrence, etc...who COULD all potentially be competing for time with him at the 2 and 3 spot. The idea that THIS particular recruit qualifying had this big of an impact on recruiting is stunning to me.

I wonder if the same would have happened if Mormon was already a sure thing but Johnson was questionable?

I think using your own logic on competing for playing time should help explain why they aren't adding more to the mix. With so much playing time and no competition down low going into 2014 I agree with Mick's logic to focus on those positions.

I didn't realize until Chad spelled it out that had Mormon not qualified for this year probably meant he was lost for good, so it makes sense that him being eligible would change Mick's focus. Especially when odds were that he wasn't going to qualify. I agree it seems odd to recruit a guy so hard for so long and then back off at the last minute, but that's part of the problem with recruiting. You have to look at guys as 8th and 9th graders and you're not entirely sure what your needs will be once they are ready to commit. As much as we've all bellyached on this board about our lack of competant bigs I'm surprised we aren't a little more happy he's focusing hard on getting more talent at those positions.

I would agree with you. What I was really wondering is why we would have shifted focus if Mormon DIDN"T qualify? We would still have SK, Davis, Johnson, Thomas, Rubles, and Lawrence competing for those minutes (to me all good options). I would have guessed we were still "good to go" even WITHOUT Mormon. However, we put the SNUB on Carrington and Terell after he committed. To me that means Mormon is the real deal (to the coaches)...otherwise if he was just another question mark why not try to sign good talent at the same position? Would we have snubbed Carrington and Terell if Johnson was the potential non-qualifier who qualified?

I agree we need to be focusing on BIGS...but for me that didn't change with the qualifying of Mormon. We would have needed them either way...and it's not like we have a ton of options at BIG. We have Clark and he wants to play the 3 too. Why risk not signing a potential great player (at any position) to "gamble" on several guys at positions we need?

To me this means COACH is very HIGH on Mormon...and if that's the case...that's great!

Back to Louisville. He signed today. Yet another example that you really never know what is going to happen in recruiting!

Very very good news now Anas Mahmoud has a better chance to land at UC but I wonder where Josh Gray goes because he was very high on Louisville and they are out of scolly's.

From his past, I would think that if either of Gray or Mahmoud are quality players that Pitino would still pursue. He has oversigned before. Doesn't mean that they will bite, but Pitino would make his interest known.
