Carrington Leads Lightning to First Win as Rutgers-Bound Williams Sits With Ankle Injury
July 12th, 2013 8:23 pm
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Late in the New York Lightning’s 77-65 victory over the St. Louis Eagles Friday night at the Peach Jam, Khadeen Carrington made a steal at midcourt, took a few dribbles and then soared in for an uncontested, picturesque dunk.

Carrington finished with a game-best 24 points as the Lightning ended a three-game losing streak here to improve to 1-3.

“That one felt good,” the 6-foot-2, 180-pound combo guard from Bishop Loughlin told SNY.tv after going 7-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-2 from the arc and 8-for-10 from the line.

“I haven’t been shooting well this weekend so it felt good to get a breakaway layup, breakway dunk. That got me going a little bit.”

The Lightning are without Rutgers-bound shooting guard Mike Williams, who suffered a severely sprained ankle and is on crutches and likely out for a couple of weeks.

“We lose some shooting. some knockdown shooting but everyone stepped up,” Carrington said of Williams. “We didn’t cry about it. He’ll be back healthy.”

Cincinnati, UConn, St. John’s and Hofstra are among those recruiting Carrington. Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin had a midcourt seat for the steal and dunk.

“I like how they play,” Carrington said of Cincinnati. “They [had] a player form New York, Lance Stephenson.”

Cincinnati also features New Yorkers Jermaine Sanders and Jermaine Lawrence and New Jersey native Shaq Thomas.

“That will be a good place if I decide to go there,” Carrington said. “I’ll be playing on and off the ball.”

UConn and coach Kevin Ollie have also made Carrington a priority.

“Same thing, lead guard, on and off the ball, like [Ryan] Boatright and Shabazz [Napier] do,” he said.

St. John’s has been in the mix, and Carrington took an unofficial there last month.

“There’s no favorites right now, I’m just weighing my options right now,” he said.

Carrington said he plans to take official visits in the fall and then decide “so I can focus on the season.”

WASHINGTON – The 2013 Nike Global Challenge featured just one native New Yorker who actually goes to high school in the Empire State: Khadeen Carrington.
NBE Sports caught up with the class of 2014 prospect on the final day of the event to talk about his recruitment and his game.
Carrington listed scholarship offers from Connecticut, St. John’s, Wake Forest, and Seton Hall. He said Virginia is another showing interest in him, as well as others he could not recall.
At this point in time, there are no schools standing out to Carrington.
“No, no favorites,” he said. “I’m just weighing my options right now, [I will] see what’s best for me.”
UConn and St. John’s are the only two schools Carrington said he has visited so far. He is looking to take a visit to Cincinnati next month, noting, “It’s planned already, I just got to confirm it with the coach.”
Carrington went on to share just what it is that he would like to find in the place he will call home after high school.
“I’m looking for great coaches,” Carrington said, “great people to be around, somewhere I could develop my game.”
The 6-foot-2 shooting guard also has a certain style of play that he would like to be a part of at the next level.
“Yeah, I like to go up and down,” Carrington said. “I like to play in the open court. That’s how I get most of my buckets.”
One thing that will not play much of a part of Carrington’s college selection is where a school is located.
“If somewhere far is the best situation for me, I’ll go,” Carrington said. “It’s not really a factor for me.”
Carrington went on to share whether he plans on creating a shorter list of schools at some point before he goes ahead and makes his college decision.
“Yeah, I’m going to cut my list down, Carrington said. “I plan on committing before the school season, probably get it out of the way.”
The rising senior would like to sign his paperwork in the early period and talked about why that is the case.
“So I could stay focused,” Carrington explained, “not have to worry about visiting schools, anything like that.”
Asked if there are any coaches he has developed the best relationships with so far, Carrington responded, “No, all the coaches I talk to right now, they’re pretty cool.”
There are a few schools in particular that Carrington has noticed following him the most on the circuit this month.
“In July, Cincinnati, Seton Hall has been there a lot, Wake Forest,” Carrington said. “That’s three that’s been watching me a lot.”
Carrington also spent some time discussing the type of player he is on the hardwood.
“Getting to the rim,” Carrington said of his primary strength. “I like to get out in the open court, get fouls, go to the foul line. I like to go up and down.”
As for the other side of spectrum said, “The weakest is having a consistent jump shot. I got to work on that in August, getting ready for the season.”
Carrington also shared what he is doing to improve his jumper.
“I take shots every day, take shots on the gun, shots off the dribble,” Carrington said. “That’s what I do.”
Finally, Carrington discussed what it meant to him to wear the red, white and blue of the United States at the Nike Global Challenge.
“It means a lot, a lot of great players wore the USA colors and I’m just another one,” Carrington said. “It’s a great opportunity.”

When it comes to his career at Bishop Loughlin, Khadeen Carrington is in pretty good company.
Last year, the shooting guard became the second player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau as a junior. The other player? Villanova standout JayVaughn Pinkston, a former McDonald’s All-American and the Fort Greene school’s all-time leading scorer.
Carrington, who averaged 24.7 points per game a year ago, is on pace to pass Pinkston as Bishop Loughlin’s all-time scorer, needing just 140 points in his senior year.
A slick and athletic two-year starter, Carrington led the CHSAA ‘AA’ in scoring a year ago. He has offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, DePaul, Florida State, Hofstra, Iowa, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, South Carolina, SMU, St. John’s, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
Carrington has visited St. John’s and UConn and plans to take a visit to Cincinnati this month.
Carrington and fellow rising senior guard Mike Williams, who verbally committed to Rutgers University last month, helped guide Bishop Loughlin to the CHSAA Class AA intersectional final for the second time in three years where the Lions again lost to Christ the King.
With both in the fold again this winter, Loughlin will again be considered one of the city’s elite teams.
“He’s a very humble young man who has grown and matured tremendously,” Bishop Loughlin coach Ed Gonzalez said. “Not much rattles him. He does what he has to do in practice, he works hard and he just wants to play the game the right way.”

I like this kid and I'm hoping we'll see him in a Bearcat uniform.

Isaiah Whitehead had 23 points and Khadeen Carrington 17 to lead New York to a 90-88 win over New Jersey to win the Nike T.O.C. Saturday.

Nice ups and handles, but I've seen better defense in a 6th-grade game. I know it's an exhibition, but holy crap... How does playing this lackadaisical of defense help anyone improve or showcase their skills?

Well didn't see that coming but atleast
Seton Hall is filling up the scollys and might not have room for Moore.

seton hall will have room for moore.

can willard and mighty seton hall beat out the "great recruiter" mick for two kids in the same class?

Mick didn't "lose" out on this kid. I'm not going to delve into much more but if Mick truly wanted him, he would have been a Bearcat. Sounds cliche but totally true in this case IMO.

It wasn't a coincidence they backed off Terrell and Carrington once it looked like Morman was going to be eligible. Mick will still monitor some JUCOs or other potential late bloomers in case he doesn't like what he sees from his current players. If Terrell and Carrington were to wait til spring to sign, it may have been a different story.

Carrington, from what I know, is essentially the same player as Kevin Johnson and Morman. Decent handles, can get to the rim, needs improvement on his jump shot. They're all around the same size and build for the most part.

If you followed his recruitment, he said he wanted to visit in August - he just had to confirm it with the head coach. If Carrington was a primary recruit, I think Mick would've certainly got him on campus ASAP. The fact that he never visited is pretty telling.

And the fact that we didn't have a coach visit him the past couple days when the contact period opened up. I think it's clear they're focused on Clark, Grantham, and some bigs.

UC backed off both Terrell and Carrington. Also the fact that Moore has not made it to campus makes me think they have done the same with him. Gary Clark and Donte Grantham are at the top of the wish list for the UC staff. Also would love Onuaku but that appears to be a long shot if he doesnt make it to campus in the near future.

Agree. Don't need carrington. He is just like Kevin Johnson. Uc backed off both for sure. They do not need shooting guards as I have said in the past they need 3,4,and 5 spot. Just look t the roster and what we are losing and what we have. Can't have 4 shooting guards and one 4 man.
