2013-2014 Season

Titus Rubbles should not be allowed to take a 3 point shot next season.

Unless they work with his shot this offseason. Get him an average shot, and he is a very solid player. Have him try a few different things and see if one feels better than the others and have him repeat it 1,000 times. If he can get people to just respect his offense, we will see a lot more easy buckets by him. IMO, he is very talented, he just needs a little but better shot and another offseason to work on some intangibles.

Don't mess with his shot. He's fine from 15' in. Just get him the ball closer in appropriate situations. If he wants to practice, let him but the messing with the mechanics may have more problems than solutions.

Mick's offense too often left Rubles at the top of the key with the ball. This and the lack of respect for his shot lead him to take the 'open' shot.

.

Thomas looked like a good player.

.

Losing Wright and Parker is going to be difficult. Wright brought ball-handling a deep-shot (how many times did this bail us out of low shot-clocks or close games?). Parker brought tenacity and rebounding when the team needed it. Replacing it might not be hard - get a guy with size and athleticism or hustle. But no one expected him to become the player hid did.

.

I really hope Lawrence is able to get a lot of minutes next season - especially against competition like Louisville while they are around.

.

EVERY PLAYER NEEDS TO WORK ON FREE THROWS.

I want to find Rubles grade school coach and ask him what he was thinking in allowing him to shoot like that. I like Rubles, he shows lots of potential. I think a few minor tweaks to his shot and most importantly, lots of reps, will help him improve. Also, like you mentioned, taking closer shots....

Things I'm looking forward to:

1. Improved scoring threats from all 5 positions. We played with 3-4 scoring threats on the court way too much this year, and that won't cut it.

2. A PG who can dribble around somebody and get to the hole. Cash will go down as one of my favorite Bearcats, but he just didn't have the ability to get past anyone after his injury this year. We will greatly miss his shooting ability and clutch shots, and Caupain will make some freshmen mistakes, but it will help that he won't have to go through the BE gauntlet.

3. I'm actually looking forward to our conference next year. Still some good teams, but also quite a few that should be easy wins. Also might benefit from officiating since the top teams in the conference always seem to.

4. I hope us playing in the Jimmy V Classic actually happens. If SK comes back (he should), we should have a good, appealing roster to get chosen for the event. That combined with @ New Mexico, and home games with SDSU and NC State (not confirmed) would be a great start to an OOC schedule.

5. Overall I hope for better officiating throughout the whole NCAA. I hope they seriously discuss the charge/block rule. The charge ruined games this year. Almost seemed like every time a defender was on the ground it was a charge. I'm tired of seeing 50-48 games and hope the officiating gets cleaned up.

Next season will be very exciting. I think things will click for us with the new additions adding an inside game to Cronin's game plan. I am also thrilled to see young Mr. Twyman joining us. Brings back memories of Jack's days with the Royals. A change of scenery is going to suit us and we have a lot to look forward to next year.

What about Twyman??

And to answer the question is SK is coming back he is. Talking in his postgame press conference he mentioned hes excited to come back and play in that phily arena again vs temple next year :) plus...i mean lets be honest, he doesnt have the elite talent to declare for the draft lol so its not like we needed to hear those postgame comments anyway.

Jack Twyman's grandson is joining the Bearcats next season as a walk on. My hubby said he is quite a player so maybe he will get some court time. Hope he does. And Sean needs another year to show he is capable of playing NBA ball. I think he will get there with some help inside. Too many teams focused on him late in the year. But that is my opinion.

This above is one of Amberely Colonels other screen names.

The only playing time Max will get is walk on time, last 2 minutes of the game when UC is up by 20 points.

I am confident that UC will have success going forward. There is a good foundation laid and I really like the 13 class. Think there will be enough for another turnament appearance next season and think the following 2 years the team will be really good.

SK needs to seriously work on his 3-pt shot. It is below average. we have this impression of him being such a good shot, but he's not. Under 31% from 3....under 40% overall doesn't cut it.

I thought you were the only one to have multiple screen names.:D In fact, as a third of the screen names on here are from you, I am also likely you!

We'll see if the the next season holds promise if and when the team gets together and the illustrious Mick can find 5 players that gel. Cash will be the hardest player to replace. I think GeLawn, given half a chance (and for sure more than 3 minutes) has all the skills to play point. He hasn't got enough minutes to demonstratetion whether or not he can handle the ball. So, basically, he'll be like all the other incoming freshmen and JD III - a bunch of unknown quantities. What I don't see is SK getting any better unless he gets a good tutor on how to take the ball to the hoop. We could probably live without Nyarsuk and Sanders very easily.
GeLawn has been here for 2 years. Hardly would consider him a freshman. Hope your right and he has the ability to step up and be the PG but I'm not counting on him. Nothing I've seen indicates he is that guy. Had he performed better in his limited role he may have got more minutes. I might also add that while he only got 3 minutes a game Mick does see him in practice everyday which does give him a little advantage over you in assessing his abilities. JDIII is also a big ? For me. 3 keys for next year in my mind are.

1. Who plays PG

2. Can someone from incoming class step up and provide some post scoring while still giving us some defense.

3. Can the upper classmen assume the leadership role vacated by Cash.

Kilpatrick needs to come back next year to continue improve his ball handling. I think his shot is fine, but he was forced to take tough shots due to the lack of a cohesive offense.

I think there is another big reason he should come back. He has a chance to go down as the second leading scorer in Bearcat history, and possibly the all-time favorite Bearcat in the mind of Bearcat fans. Short term, this may cost him some money if were to choose to go to Europe this year, but long term will open doors for him if he chooses to return to settle in this area. He could be a fixture in this community and will be revered wherever he goes.

whatever he decides I wish him well. Seems like a great kid.

Now that the season is over I would like to thank all the people who run Bearcat talk. Really enjoyed the site. Interacting with all the people who post here has certainly added to my enjoyment of the season. Again thanks to staff and all the posters.

1) I agree. I'm not sold on GG but not because of physical ability. I just don't think he plays smart. JD3 is the wildcard along with the freshmen but it is GG's job till one of them take it.

2) This is vital to me but scoring in the paint goes beyond the bigs. This team has to improve in the paint period. I loved seeing Shaq and the pull ups yesterday.

3) I was disappointed in player leadership this season. Not in terms of leading by example or playing hard, but in terms of a guy on the court that pulls the team together.

Jeff, people may argue with me on this but I think Shaquille has a bigger upside then SK. He can break a defender down off the dribble and get to the rim. If he can learn to finish a bit better and improve his outside accuracy he has a shot to really be good. It also wouldn't hurt if he put on 25lbs.

Jeff, what is the rep on Lawrence? Is he the type of player who would provide scoring help on your second point? Or is he more of a finesse, perimeter player? Or maybe Strickland?

Strickland is a true low post scorer. Lawrence is that valuable face up 4 that can score on all 3 levels. A stretch 4 is huge. Lawrence can play the 3 or 4 but I think he will play mostly the 4.

I think SK will be back which obviously leaves a huge log jam at guard if Mormon qualifies.

My guess is GG, Caupain, and Johnson will play the 1. SK, Davis, Morman the 2 with Davis playing some 1. Thomas, Sanders, Lawrence will play the 3. Lawrence, Rubles, Jackson the 4. Strickland, Gaines, Nyarsuk the 5.

Obviously, the numbers don't add up so subtract where you will.

1) I think GG will overall become a role player/defensive stopper as he matures and plays under control. JDIII might start but will be a caretaker until Caupain or Johnson is ready to assume the PG spot. I love Caupain's rep for an ability to create easy scores by getting in the lane, drawing fouls, and hitting ft's.

2) For the non bigs, Shaq, Caupain, Morman seem to have more of an attack mentality rather than settle for an outside shot that you can get late in the shot clock anyway. Johnson, per espn (recruiting guy, I'll look for his quote) is one of the more versatile guards who can score from all levels. I think he, Johnson, evolves into the floor leader with Jackson providing the emotional lift.

3) Lawrence could become the ultimate matchup nightmare for opposing teams since he can handle well period, not just for a big guy, and will shoot (as he improves) over smaller defenders.

4) Strickland seems like a guy that embraces being in the low post. Not a big guy that hangs out around the 3 point line.

5) Since the conference we're going to be in is not the level of competition we've seen in recent years. I hope Mick uses it as a way to get the young guys extended minuted of the course of the full season so they develop and contribute as the season transitions to conference and NCAA tourney.

Future's bright!!
