2013-2014 Season

Help Support BearcatTalk:

1) I think GG will overall become a role player/defensive stopper as he matures and plays under control. JDIII might start but will be a caretaker until Caupain or Johnson is ready to assume the PG spot. I love Caupain's rep for an ability to create easy scores by getting in the lane, drawing fouls, and hitting ft's.

2) For the non bigs, Shaq, Caupain, Morman seem to have more of an attack mentality rather than settle for an outside shot that you can get late in the shot clock anyway. Johnson, per espn (recruiting guy, I'll look for his quote) is one of the more versatile guards who can score from all levels. I think he, Johnson, evolves into the floor leader with Jackson providing the emotional lift.

3) Lawrence could become the ultimate matchup nightmare for opposing teams since he can handle well period, not just for a big guy, and will shoot (as he improves) over smaller defenders.

4) Strickland seems like a guy that embraces being in the low post. Not a big guy that hangs out around the 3 point line.

5) Since the conference we're going to be in is not the level of competition we've seen in recent years. I hope Mick uses it as a way to get the young guys extended minuted of the course of the full season so they develop and contribute as the season transitions to conference and NCAA tourney.

Future's bright!!

Completely agree. I wonder what the boards thoughts are as to who will be on the floor at the end of a close game?

I thought you were the only one to have multiple screen names.:D In fact, as a third of the screen names on here are from you, I am also likely you!

Simply not true. I have only one screen name. I have never posted on this board with a screen name other than The Ralph. Ask the mods who can check IP addresses if you do not believe me.

Shaq and JDIII will be the key to next season's success or failure.

I do not expect much from Jermaine Lawrence as he missed all but 3 games of his high school season and did not play well in those, his scoring average was what, about 4 points a game?

Noteful about next season is that the (Big Metro?) conference will be a round robin, will play every team in the conference home and home.

I was just joking with you. I know many on here have accused you of having multiple screen names, especially Amberly Colonel who thought that a third of the posters on here were you. i just thought it was ironic that you pointed out that he has a second screen name in JuliePitzer. No harm, no foul.

GeLawn has been here for 2 years. Hardly would consider him a freshman. Hope your right and he has the ability to step up and be the PG but I'm not counting on him. Nothing I've seen indicates he is that guy. Had he performed better in his limited role he may have got more minutes. I might also add that while he only got 3 minutes a game Mick does see him in practice everyday which does give him a little advantage over you in assessing his abilities. JDIII is also a big ? For me. 3 keys for next year in my mind are.

1. Who plays PG

2. Can someone from incoming class step up and provide some post scoring while still giving us some defense.

3. Can the upper classmen assume the leadership role vacated by Cash.
I thought GeLawn played well for his 3 minutes yesterday.Yeah, he got his immediate back court foul, but he was playing tenacious. Then he made a great cut through the lane for a basket. He's really quick. But, he was then immediately yanked by Mick never to be seen again. He always winds up looking frustrated on the bench. I guess we'll just have to wait.

I hope JD3 is not the key to next years success. He may be if Kilpatrick does not return, but otherwise will be part of the rotation. I am not counting him on getting starters minutes. Are you? Shaq's development though is a key.

This is what I think could eventually be are line up next year.

PG. new guy

2 SK

3. Thomas

4. Lawrence

5 Strickland

GeLawn will back up PG.
JDIII will need to compete for time at the wing against some very athletic newcomers.
Sanders has not helped himself at all this year. His minutes will be limited
Gaines in my opinion will be gone. No real growth and not enough time to develope.
Narnsuk if he adds weight and strength will be back up.
Jackson will sub. So tired of turnovers and fouls 40 feet from basket. For a three year guy he really should be farther along.

Team will need time gel but will be better at end of year than beginning.

I also think one of new wings will redshirt. Not enough minutes for everyone and no sense wasting a year sitting on bench.

I agree that Gaines is the most likely player to transfer if a scholly is necessary. A Division 2 school is best suited for him as he would not have to sit out a year and could play significant minutes. Jackson will play significant minutes as he brings such high energy, but unfortunately dumb mistakes are part of package. I think if Kilpatrick comes back, next years team by years end will be much better than this years version. I think they will try and play smaller and faster than this year, similar to what they did at the end of the year when Gaines and Narsuk saw hardly any playing time.

better talent around Gaines should make him better. his athleticism is sick and his blocking ability could be better than cheik
Guy has been in program for 3 years. He is not a D1 center and never will be. On Mick's radio show he hinted he is not happy with his progress. If I need a scholly for next year his is it.

think Jackson will get minutes at 4 and 5 but Lawrence,Rubles, who I hope takes a step forward along Strickland will get lions share of time. Let me put it this way if Jackson's minutes are limited that will mean Lawrence,Rubles and Strickland are doing well. When Mick wants to go small Jackson will see time at 5. But if yesterday's game told me anything it is that big centers will eat him up down low at his size.

there will definitely be a big in 2014. I am guessing 2.

I think you're right. A lesson from this year is the need for a more balanced team. That being said, good bigs are so coveted in the recruiting process that the competition is crazy. It's not as if Cronin hasn't tried. Hopefully the 2013 is a step towards more top 25 recruiting classes to come.

After next year we will only have one big unless you count Lawrence a big on the roster. Getting a couple of bigs next year is paramount.

That was my wife, Buck. As most people on here, including you, know. Still trying to stir it up, aren't you?

Ignore him, AC. All he is doing is attempting to bait you in to a response so that you will get banned as his other ID was.

I think between SK, Shaq, Lawrence, JDIII, and rubles they will be able at attack the rim a lot more... I'm not sure how they are going to replace Parker and Cash's outside shooting... perhaps one of the other freshman can actually shoot.
your forgetting about jeramiah the 3rd he has a great touch from 3 and guyn actually started to show touch as well

Not feeling it for JD111. average athlete without a great handle. Maybe the year off has improved him. Looks like better options coming in. Morman is the sleeper in this class

This year's team peaked early, beating Iowa State and Oregon Thanksgiving weekend. Perhaps next year UC should start slow and peak in March.
