i think he'll have a very nice career here but I really think he'll have trouble guarding which will hinder him in year 1. Hope I'm wrong.

We've heard for a couple years now that Cronin is shifting to more offensively skilled players. Seeing Cumberland is allowed to play through a defensive lapse or 2 will go a long way in determining if there's truth to that.

Jake do you really believe it is that simple? Hugg's never did. You didn't guard you didn't play. What does that say to the rest of the team. He can get beat but I'm yanked when my Defense breaks down.

Not sure why you'd even bother recruiting offensive minded players then. You can be allowed to make a mistake. Lord knows Kevin Johnson and other defensive guys are allowed to turn it over and clank shots on the other end. I get what you're saying about Huggs, but I'm not the one who decided to make a shift in recruiting philosophy. That was Coach Cronin's plan (one I support btw if he lets it play out).

Jake, Cronin doesn't go out with the mind set to recruit defensive minded players. He gets guys who want to come here. Coaches who hold players accountable are usually successful. Giviing players the impression that if you score the ball it's alright to get beat occasionally is not a recipe for success. KJ's missteps haven't gone unpunished. He was a starter at one time if memory serves me and Cobb took his spot. Cronin isn't changing his philosophy he is getting better players. You are advocating he have a long leash with Cumberland and I'm saying he earns his minutes like everyone else. Bearcats aren't givin anything. I understand nurturing players and developement. If Cronin is such a bad recruiter he is getting lots out of the sub standard recruit he gets. If the knock is he needs to get better players it's not unreasonable to expect them to earn their time by playing both ends of the floor. No way I move the line for anyone on the team.

Waite I'm not saying to move the line for Cumberland. I'm saying to be adaptable to the players you get. He might get beat a couple times and score 15 efficient points. Johnson might not get beat at all and shoot 1-7. Different kinds of players. Not fair to bench someone for not fitting a very specific mold, if you aren't specifically targetting players with that mold in mind. Based on reports I've heard, Cumberland is a different kind of player. If he is going to have that be held against him, he shouldn't be here.

Cronin has been very adaptable. He has played to the strengths of the players he has gotten. I'm sure he will be with Cumberland. He is from Wilmington. He knows the kind of coach Cronin is better then you or I. If he didn't think he belonged here I'm quite certain he had other options. I agree with you all coaches need to recognize The strength of his players it also includes putting then in positions to succeed. Cumberland knew before he got here he would have to guard. That I'm sure of. If he didn't feel he was up to the task he wouldn't be here. He knew the expectation. He will get a opportunity and hopefully he takes advantage of it.

I definitely agree that Cumberland knows what will be expected of him.

*Not sure I'd totally agree on Coach Cronin being all that adaptable. That can be a conversation for another day though.

I just remember last year when Cronin was interviewed minutes before the game he said we needed to "feel things out". "At Xavier?" I thought. Yes. At Xavier. They didn't come out the same way and we got punched in the face. Big time. Makes me wonder if coach tells the guys that in all the big games (or games he perceives as big, as I don't believe GW and Neb qualify as big games). Bc coming out flat was a big problem last year, and Cronin's teams always tighten up in big games.

It was a huge problem last year. They'd scrap all game to battle back, but often, it was too little too late. Have to start games better this year. No more down 15-2 eight minutes into the game.

I don't think Uc comes out flat in games against high powered offense Bc of anything the coach does. It's typically because our D works better as the game goes on and we figure out how they play offensively.
From Iowa st to Xavier, it just took our D a while to figure out the good offensive teams.
Good offensive teams can start good from the start bc it's less reactionary. Uc needs to feel you out first, unfortunately that leads us to down 14-4 to start games and yet, by the start of the second half, we've either tied the game or brought it to a few points.

As our offense gets better, I think will start games better
