I'm talking about in terms of success on the court which is what most people argue. My post above is very telling. Mick Cronin has rebuilt UC basketball on the court, and I just read this morning that attendance is on the rise again. Like him or not gentlemen he deserves some respect for what he inherited and where the program is. It is back.

Bob Huggins last 3 years he was 67-27 overall while playing in CUSA and had a 1st round loss, follwed by 2 2nd round losses. He finished 3rd in the league standings each of his last 3 years at Cincinnati. He won 1 conference tournament championship in 2004 in those 3 years.

Mick Cronin's last 3 years he is 66-30 overall while playing in the BEast and he has a 2nd round loss, Sweet 16 (has beat higher seeds in the NCAA tournament), and a TBD (a win today locks them into at least 1st round NCAA). He's finished 6th, 4th, and TBD in the Big East League standings and has been to 1 Big East tournament final. Tougher league, similiar results.

I have really tired of hearing about the mess Coach encountered. That was an eternity ago and people still use it to defend him. That time is long gone. Please bury it. The future is now, not in the past.

You will continue to hear that as long as other people keep judging Cronin on his whole tenure without giving him a pass for the first 3 years or so.

Played it many times. I did my 20 in the AF/ANG combo. Were you up there when Larry Gooch was the Base Commander?
was there from 80-85 AFOTEC test team. Then went to the cape were We launched delta's off 17a &17b. GPS satellites. Did last 7 years at cape. A 20 year missile troop. Had a lot of friends in 3901st at VAFB. Seems I do remember that name.

thats because many could not have rebuilt the program. Going to BE with a two year gap in recruiting, small budget to being a team that
makes the dance. Look at DePaul and others. What Mick did was tremendous and is often overlooked. Even now with conference membership up in air he still signed a nice class.

great post Jeff.

So Mick started Epp (as he should) but Kilpatrick was at the scorers table before the clock ticked. Plus, the way Epp stood in the corner, he must have been directed to not get involved in any play - or maybe that's one of Mick's set plays.

More A+ coaching......NOT!! Mick's just lucky the game is tied and going to OT.

Great halftime adjustments by mick. Great win and confidence booster for the team

We have some momentum now. I am predicting some deep tourney runs in the be and ncaa

As I said, the program is back where it was pre Huggs v. Z. They are making the NCAA yearly. Well except to those who inflate the success of the program after 1993 (Final 4 and Elite 8 '92 and '93 respectively).

1994 - 1st round loss
1995 - 2nd round loss
1996 - Elite 8
1997 - 2nd round loss
1998 - 2nd round loss
1999 - 2nd round loss
2000 - 2nd round loss
2001 - Sweet 16
2002 - 2nd round loss
2003 - 1st round loss
2004 - 2nd round loss
2005 - 2nd round loss

UC was good most years, very good some years, but not great under Bob Huggins. His first 2 seasons were his best. The program was huge in the city of Cincinnati, not so much nationally. It was a respected program not an elite one. I wish some in the fan base would stop holding this standard up for Mick Cronin to live up to that never existed. This will be the 3rd straight NCAA trip and if by some luck they can win the first 2 games, it will be the first back to back Sweet 16's since 1992 and 1993. Think about that guys.

Bearcat Jeff, I would say when the program reaches #1 in the nation, that qualifies as pretty great. We were #1 a number of times under Huggs. We had all-americans. We had the consensus national player of the year. We were #1 and the favorite to win the national championship in 2000 before the Martin injury. Your facts are a little off in that Huggs best years were not his first two. His first two were NITs. Years 3 and 4 were Final 4/Elite 8. Cronin hasn't sniffed #1 in 7 yrs. His players can't even make 1st team all-league, much less get close to all-american. He's put nobody in the NBA. Most of his team can't shoot, can't pass, can't throw the ball inbounds, etc. When Huggs took over, the program had been decimated for over 10 years, with losing seasons and no NCAAs. The roster was so thin that we had to start a football player.

I was excited when Mick got the job. He has done very well with graduation rates and reducing the negative publicity. He has returned us to the NCAA. But, he has shown very little ability in developing players over 4 years, especially big men. His coaching in February for most of his time here has been atrocious, and this year is no different. His recruiting, for the most part has been disappointing. This year's shows some promise, but we were excited by some of his past classes, only to see them not be as good as expected.

What does this all mean? Mick is a decent coach who has done a good job returning us to respectability after starting in a difficult situation. He's one of us. He's a Bearcat. But, lets call a spade, a spade. He has a long way to go to match the success that preceded him. This year the team underachieved massively, now barely able to defeat the Big East bottom feeders in overtime at home on Senior Day. Our record on our home court is beyond embarrassing. We should still make the dance, but only by the skin of our teeth. I'll cut Mick a break this year. I hope this was just a chemistry thing, but I expect to see our team play much better than we have this year. I hope Mick continues to improve as a coach. I hope he is still here in 20 years, but he must perform a lot better than he has this year. All this being said, I hope Mick brings us a victory on Wednesday, and then he shocks everyone with an upset of Georgetown. I know this team has it in them, and God knows, we're certainly due to get hot! On to MSG.......GO CATS!!!!!

now your complaining because he did not get enough time. Priceless!!!!

this team is not underachieving. It is really not that talented. The pg is injured, they haven't got a inside scoring threat, the main scorer can't create his own shot and has no handle. We were 12-0 after easy part so schedule and once league play started we were brought back to earth. Making the NCAA with this group is a nice accomplishment. You have been listening to BearcatMick too much.
