mick cant do much more i think we forget its the players job to execute and they often look confused. IDK if anyone else saw a particular UC timeout where they zoomed in on mick and you could read his lips saying "what do you guys want me to do? I cant make you play hard". To me that screams that this team doesnt enjoy playing together which mick has little control over.

Negative reinforcement. Works really well..........NOT!

Negative reinforcement??? Nothing wrong with some harsh reality. They are not playing well and haven't been for awhile. The coach being honest is not a issue. Sometimes it is a kick in the pants that is needed. This team plays hard and has been very competitive all year save the ND game. They were beaten by Louisville which is just a better team on their court. I think people got a little carried away with our good start. Once teams saw we had no post players we became very easy to defend. My contention is, that given the talent on this team getting to the NCAA is a good accomplishment. By the way we will beat USF at home on senior day and we will be a lock to make the Dance.

Dale has been a big proponent of Mick not taking players out so quickly and not yelling so much.

Not the case. I'm strictly talking present circumstances. I'd love to see UC win the NCAA, but let's be realistic. The professional bookies in Vegas have UC winning the whole thing at 500/1. It's unfortunate but it's reality. I want them to win as much as you do, but I'm sure not betting on that. (That's a hypothetical) I NEVER root vs them or want them to lose. It frustrates the hell out of me to see them play mediocre, and it still falls on Cronin. If the team flounders, it all falls on the coach. If a business fails, do you think they blame the workers or the management? Let's take one game at a time. First we have to get by USF and then play the BE tournament.
Nobody aspires to go to the NIT. But sometimes the NIT is the only inevitability. If they don't like it, they can always turn down the bid - it's their option.

That just doesn't make much sense. We are talking about the present. You yourself said they basically have no chance of winning the NCAA this year so you'd rather have them go far in the NIT. You can't have them going far in the NIT without missing the NCAA and getting into the NIT. The only way to do that is to play worse. Obviously the goal is the NCAA because the better teams go there rather than the NIT. Which is why it doesn't make any sense logically to rather have them go to the NIT.

Mick has a great reationship with his players.Verbalizing and PT are the two biggest motivating tools a coach has to utilize. Perhaps CaptDave should change his title to Troop leader Dave, get more active in the sale of girl scout cookies and leave the coaching to Mick and his staff. While I have no problem with a more passive style every successful leader I have ever encountered has enforced accountability. Patting players or employees on the back after repeated poor performance is not dong either any good. Almost all players who have reached the D1 level are very much aware of the demand put on them to perform. Nothing I have seen Mick do would be considered over the top. I spent 20 ears on active duty military. I have seen and experienced a lot worse. Much the better person for it.

Every teams goal should be to win every game and win the NCAA tourney. Not play 3/4 of the season throw in the towel and opt for the tourney we have the best chance to win. The field is wide open this year. EVery No.1 team has been knocked off multiple times. Regaining the reputation of being a regular participant in the NCAA tourney has many benefits in future selections and recruiting. LongHaul your dealing with a guy who proclaims to be a fan of the team but hopes they lose so the coach will get canned. Thus his irrational comments.

Don't get mad at me, I'm the one that agrees with you. People aren't picking up on my sarcasm lately...

Every teams goal is the NCAA. This is not even a debate. Recruits come to schools because they consistently make the NCAA. No recruit has ever said, "I wanna play for South Carolina. They won the NIT." It doesn't matter if you play 1 game or 6, the world is watching and the possibilities are endless. We see it every year. A team nobody noticed or one that everyone had dismissed, making a run to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, or Final 4. UC with it's defense and rebounding has a chance to be a surprise team that does that. If they can hit a stretch of 2-3 games in a row where they're shooting well they can beat any team in the field this year (andd naysayers I know if they don't they could lose to anybody). It may not happen but it is not out of the realm of possibility. It's that possibility that makes the NCAA Tournament special!

Every team's goal is to win their conference, that is what is not up for debate. You think before the season MSU or Arizona or UNC or Creighton said let's just make the NCAA's? No, the goal is to win your conference, which assures you a bid to the NCAA's if you don't play in a really weak conference. That way you achieve both a mid to high seed in the NCAA's and a good regular season record.

I have 2 comments. 1.) I, too, have 20 military years under my belt including every conflict from Nam through the Gulf War. So GI to GI, you ought to know the the best, most effective leaders didn't succeed by yelling at their troops.
2.) Show me in any post where I hoped the team would lose so the coach would get canned.
All I'm looking for is a fair fight where I have a chance to make it to the end game, a chance to win. The best teams win out. I hope you're right and we go all the way in whichever field we end up, but realistically.......
While I'm not a Cronin fan, he is NOT the Messiah like you guys all seem to think. He does OK, but has to improve in a lot of areas. To say he doesn't, then we should be #1 and win the whole thing, not be unranked and 10th seeded.

have no idea what branch you were in but I haven't been in a outfit were the NCO'S didn't yell at the troops. I guess you think Patton was a quiet leader. Fact is you proclaim to be a fan while you covertly hope they lose to say I told you so. Seen It many times. I don't think Cronin is the Messiah but I do recognize the good job he's done and the growing both him and the program have done. For what he inherited and the budget he does well and will get better.

You are absolutely wrong. I NEVER want to lose! That's the ferocious competitive spirit I embody. I don't care if it's UC or a match on the golf course. Play to win or don't play. But don't enter the contest if your mindset is not to win. All sports are handicapped somehow, be it seedings in this case, weight in a horserace, handicaps in amateur golf, etc. Could be why Cronin schedules all the early season patsies - to get his team's mindset in a winning mode. A+ in theory, but it creates a false sense of being better than you really are. Who does Duke play early on? You may not win them all, but you'll toughen up quickly and learn what's needed to improve against very strong competition.

Oh, and by the way, NCO's are like Cronin's subordinate coaching staff. Cronin is the Commander, the leader I refer to.

Every team should have one goal. Win a championship, otherwise, why the hell are you even playing? Does anyone think UC's players felt satisfied last year after losing to OSU? Of course not, so why should you as fans?

One goal at a time. That's how many of the ranked teams , not playing the game at hand, but looking forward to the subsequent opponent. Happens in ALL sports venues.

I think you may be a bit off the rocker. Your comments don't even make any sense. What does one goal at a time really have to do with what I said? Of course I don't have a clue what your "not playing the game at hand" even means.

This is incredibly false. I bet you most teams, if not all had the goal of winning the conference, winning their conference tournament, and ultimately winning the national championship. By my count that is three goals. Of course teams could have other goals as well. Some teams #1 goal is to make it to the tournament. Doesn't mean they are happy when they lose but say for instance Depaul, wouldn't surprise me one bit if on of their goals at the beginning of the season was to make it to the tournament.

Waite Hoyt 2 & CaptDale, Thank you both for your service to our country!!!!!
